Several games contain jokes that are specifically about games or target gamers. Inside jokes, that the non-gaming community just wouldn't catch. Some of us, on the other hand, will catch on right away. That's what this list is about: a pictorial gallery of such "inside jokes".

Note, this list is not about games with jokes or humour in general, but only games that have jokes about games or gaming.

What are some good examples? I've done some research and come up with over 50 entries, but I'm sure this doesn't exhaust the potential games that qualify. Feel free to add to this list, with pictures if possible!

It's a marvellous inside joke for BGGers to enjoy! Job well done!

But that's not all! There's a few more self-referential game industry jokes. Three cards make direct reference to the names of other games: Prophecy, Runebound, and Talisman, as well as to the names of their designers:

Master Vladd card (Mountain of Proph): tribute to Prophecy (by Vlaada Chvátil)
Master Marrel card (Forest of Rune): tribute to Runebound (by Martin Wallace & Darrell Hardy)
Master Bob card (Swamp of Talis): tribute to Talisman (by Bob Harris)

Now that's clever!

Friedmann Friese has included several inside jokes in the names of the characters of this game. To begin with, here's a nod to Aldie & Derk (Scott Alden and Derk Solko, who run BGG):

These next two characters are a clear allusion to the Knizia games Medici & Strozzi.

Some of the other characters use the names of gaming personalities, designers or active BGGers (e.g. Tom Lehmann, Eric Brosius), refer to names of beer (Coors & Miller) or the Mario Bros (Luigi & Mario), and parody Adidas (see the artwork on the Rjabow card).

There's probably more jokes in these cards that I haven't picked up on yet - can anyone add more specifics?

It's not really a gaming inside joke, but it is mathematically clever - the secret of the ID numbers on the character cards is as follows:

Quote:
La Famiglia(red) = golden ratio
The Accountants(blue) = pi
The Brutes(yellow) = square root of 2
the Mercenaries(green) = e (the base of the natural logarithm)

The back of the "things" cards feature a rabbit in the upper right, quite concealed in the Medieval-style decoration. This is a joke by Valeria De Caterini, the illustrator, to recall Il Mischiastorie: Osvaldo e i cacciatori that's a previous game of mine with a rabbit as a main character that she illustrated with not a slight effort (there are 56 different full color drawings in it). For the same reason, Il Gioco dei Minerali's board features a rabbit too.

Some of the cards included in Crappy Birthday were taken at the North Star Games office (in other words, my house). We put a hidden copy of Crappy Birthday in most of these pictures.

This is Satish Pillalamarri, one of the co-presidents of North Star Games.

Since this picture includes Crappy Birthday, we tried to sneak in a copy of Wits & Wagers.

This check is a $2,000 People's Choice prize that North Star Games won at a local business plan competition. Andrew Chen is the person in the picture. You might run across him on the BGG since he does customer support.

This picture was taken at the 50th birthday party of a BGG user named Tony Allen (tada). Both Scott Alden and I attended the disco themed event. I posted some pictures of the event on Tony's geeklist about it. That's Tony on the left, and let me tell you something, that guy knows how to disco! He used to go dancing "every night" when he was younger and it shows.

This is my wife's penguin collection. I'm not sure how it started, but I've witnessed how it continues... (she did not buy any of these items)

This slot machine is in the North Star Games office.

These neon signs are normally in the North Star Games office. We brought them up to the front window of my house for this picture.

Great entry, and fantastic work to incorporate these in the game!

I recognized the "Reality Show Competition" immediately from BGG pictures, as part of the well-deserved lore of Wits & Wagers classics!

One of my daughters is a big penguin fan and loves all things penguin, so if you're looking for someone to inherit the "Penguin Collection", feel free to put her name down in your will and last testament - she certainly would consider getting that as a very UNcrappy birthday!

That's exactly the type of response we're hoping to get with most of these cards. Our goal for each gift was to have at least one person at the table love it, and at least one other person hate it. We figured that was the best way to bet people talking and laughing.

Is there a complete listing of what each company is and what they produced?

I have no idea what Brooms Bewitched is. I am guessing maybe Ravensburger as that seems to be a major publisher of Moon's games not present.

And i am not sure what FF is and what they made.

Is there a complete listing of what each company is and what they produced?

I have no idea what Brooms Bewitched is. I am guessing maybe Ravensburger as that seems to be a major publisher of Moon's games not present.

And i am not sure what FF is and what they made.

Hmm, there isn't one that I know of. I assume FF is FFG but I can't think of any game they ever produced for him.

That was my first thought but since they have "flight" in their name, I would have expected it to be more obvious, not an abbreviation. Plus they go by FFG. I thought maybe it was 2F since it is also green but didn't see a game they make either. So then I thought maybe Face2Face games.

The companies are not necessarily publishers of Alan's designs but also friends. FF means Friedemann Friese (the color could be a hint here ninja). Brooms Bewitched refers to Andrea Meyer who owns the small company "Bewitched Spiele".

So I was bored today since the office is dead in anticpation of a 3-day weekend. Please feel free to make any corrections, or fill in any missing info. I would also be curious to know if a) color and b) relative value in the game, have any significance. As suspected and confirmed, FF is of course green and White wind is of course white (while also being modest and the least "valuable").

Considering Moon's other game, TtR, I wouldn't be surprised if those notable exceptions got covered in Airlines America or whatever. Although I thought FF was referring to FFG. Could add that one too as "Fantastic Flights" or something.

It rather looks they have just finished, and one of them wasn't playing at all, as setup is 3p.

Yeah looks like they are just finished with blue minion on the scoring track. But the other minions haven't been scores yet!

Also, maybe the 4th imp standing there is a small joke reference to the foreman you need when imps do actions?

There's lots of great humor in Belfort, including a nice inside joke on the artwork of the Calendar Board, which has Seth Jaffee's BGG user name scrawled on it (sedjtroll). No Trolls Allowed!

But there's much more! For a more complete list, see:

In the game you can build devious inventions and among them an Addictive Game. It is cheap to construct and brings you bags of money. The graphics on the card clearly suggests what it is.

Well, they are playing Nefarious. Who are the players I can't say but this might be another hidden reference.

If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say that the guy on the right, with the cat, is Ernst Stavro Blofeld, from the James Bond series (judging by the cat), and the guy on the left is probably Dr. Clayton Forrester from Mystery Science Theater 3000. Not sure who the redhead is supposed to be, if anyone. So not so much game references, but pop-culture references.

I put lots of good stuff into the paragraphs for Ambush! and the supplements.

Richard Berg named a town in "The Campaign for North Africa" after his son (El Alex if memory serves), and just check out the cover of Avalon Hill's golf game, I forget the name, I'm there as are all of use at Victory Games.
