I was reading the first novel of R.A. Salvatore about the early life of Drizzt Do'Urden last week. As I read it a while ago while re-reading it I was again amazed by the tons of ideas crammed into his books. And of course being a boardgamer immediately got some ideas to re-theme some other games that I would find more interesting with a dark elf theme. So sharpen your adamantite blades, prepare your poison arrows and praise the Spider Queen.

(if you do not know abour dark elves, go check Wikipedia or grab the books...)

LLOTH TLU MALLA; JAL ULTRINNAN ZHAH XUNDUS!

Feel free to add more...

Claim altars and cult places, build temples for Lloth. Buy slaves for sacrifice and try to gain the favour of High Priestesses (Power Plants).

Glory to Lloth.

If your partol succeeds you may loot the trading post of other underdark dwellers.

Good luck to them...but drow, or trowe is part of celtic folklore. I would imagine if you based a drow design off of what TSR has designed, then yes there would be a problem; but, the word itself has been around longer than TSR has.

Drow were included in the 3rd edition SRD (basically list of things 3rd party publishers were explicitly allowed to use). For comparison, beholders, mind flayers, and umber hulks (amongst others) were all conspicuously absent.

Not exactly a legal opinion, but at least a demonstration that at one point in the game's recent past they did not consider Drow to be 'proprietary.'

"Their most popular board game is a tactical game called Shelza Ir. It superficially resembles chess, though the board is far larger. The two opposing sides do not have an equal number of pieces, but they do have an equal point value. The more valuable a piece is, the farther it can move in a turn, and the more unusual maneuvers — such as moving diagonally, or jumping other pieces — it can make. When a piece captures an enemy piece, it not only removes it from the board, it gains a portion of the enemy's value, raising its status to a more powerful piece. Under certain circumstances, a player can actually capture one of his own pieces, removing it from the board but granting some of its points to the victorious piece — thus teaching even the youngest of drow tacticians the benefits of sacrificing a portion of one's own forces for a larger gain."

"A drow board game akin to chess, where the point value determines the distance and manner in which each piece moves. The higher value, the more oddly and further it can go. Points are gained by taking another's piece, and occasionally even taking one's own."

now we just need someone to make rules, board, etc.

possibility to design a new game...

Dark elves roam the surface, raiding the human settlements for slaves and gold.

The various nobble houses struggle for control and influence.

But if the daylight (storm marker) passes over a territory, they have to hide again in the Underdark (the tanks).

"Each faction has special powers that overlook certain rules in the game. Each turn players move about the map attempting to pick up valuable spice (LOOT - valuables and slaves) while dealing with giant sandworms (MIGHTY HEROES), deadly storms (DAYLIGHT), and other players' military forces. A delicate political balance is formed amongst the factions to prevent any one side from becoming too strong. When a challenge is made in a territory, combat takes the form of hidden bids with additional treachery cards to further the uncertainty."

Drow are taking over the cities and farmlands of the Savage North via surface military presence and political intrigue (as per the plot in Silverfall).

A modular board is built as the drow explore and discover the surface world. Dark elf meeples are placed to establish area control. Strand the meeples of competing houses and increase your influence. Whichever house comes out looking best on this mission, wins Lolth's favor and will lead Menzoberranzan.

Speaking of Drow, anybody got the sava game they play in some of the novels created? Could only find bits and pieces about the game with a quick search. Term "chess-like" is used regularly, but you also get one die roll in each game.

Will try again.

"In D&D, dark elves play Chess, but with the twist of being able to throw dice once per game. If all the dice land on spiders, they get to make a move on their opponents behalf (to simulate the dark elf tendecy of turning on each other even in the face of a serious threat). This seems more like something Chaos would do in Warhammer, though"

For the start trek klingon game there is lots of stuff...
