It's the time of year to start tracking our collective hit list from Essen 2008. This list is a place to collect BGG users' first impressions of the new games. My goal is to help narrow the field for those looking for the "best new games" to try.

I've done these lists for three years running now. Here are the links to the lists from years past:
Essen 2007
Essen 2006

The Rules

Please only rate games you have played. Please rate them even if you've only played once. These are just initial impressions, not final verdicts. Additional comments are welcome, but not required.

+ means positive first impression
0 means neutral first impression
- means negative first impression

Please post a comment, thumbs will not be counted.

You may indicate ++ for games that you think are outstanding, but these votes will be counted the same as regular + votes.

I will regularly update the results with running totals - see item #1.

GeekMail me if you have suggested additions for the list. I need to add the items myself so that I can edit the entries and update the totals. I don't want the list to get too long, either, so I'm leaving off many of the more obscure titles. Games with very few "users wanting" won't be making an appearance.

Not bad, but hardly has a niche to fill when 6 Nimmt! does it so much better. I bought a copy but that was more for the people I will play it with than myself...

Yep that was 12 Power Grid maps back to back over two days. Worth doing, but possibly not in such a concentrated burst.

With five players, there aren't enough turns for the market to fluctuate in interesting ways. It's probably better with fewer players, but I doubt I'll return to the game.

Manages to turn M.U.L.E. into a boardgame quite well; it's more that goal, rather than the implementation, that I think leaves it short.

Absolutely nothing innovative here, which isn't necessarily bad in itself, except the parts don't even form an overly interesting whole. Nothing to complain about, but also no real reason to play it.

Probably fun for family games, especially together with kids. I didn't gave me the urge to buy it though, and if it weren't for the original playfactor of the vertical board I might have given it a -

P.S.: Where could you buy it in Essen? I was told at the Ravensburger stand that they had production difficulties and the demo games were the only nes available.

A used game dealer way in the back of hall 4 had a box of them for sale at 20 euro each. I was bummed when the guys at the Ravensburger booth said it didn't make the show, so this was a nice find.

Finally got a chance to play this at BGG.Con. This is a great game if you have kids. Rolling the dice, stealing treasures all while ducking the mummy makes for a good time.

Not a bad game. There's more going on than it appears on the surface. Once the sides are developed, cards are in hand and advisors are around to offer sevices, some interesting decisions have to be made. The 2p scenarios is useful for only teaching the game. I'd put the sweet spot at 4.

I haven't played (15 hour campaign!) however I think there are a lot of good ideas here. Particularly the system where each player secretly picks a "play-style". For example you could choose to be a diplomat, a defender of the faith, or a warlord. Depending on your play-style your choices will affect your scoring. (Destroying cities and burninating the pesants when your supposed to be a diplomat will earn you neg. points.)

Saladin is obviously a labor of love for the designer and it shows. Lots of detail and tons of history is in the game. My initial impression is there's a good game here but it needed a professional developer to polish it up and curb the playtime.

Thank you for the positive impression you passed on here and - agreed - as a first timer I would be happy to accept the help of a professional designer - if one steps-up. I hope for some feedback from first rounds once the game is out in full, but surely there will be a lot to streamline.

I wish there was a little more correlation between making the connections in the game and the end of game payoffs. The taking cubes is just too chaotic.

Just above 0, but it's quick and it's better than Pickomino, although the tiles are not quite as nice as Pickomino's.

interesting mechanics but too fast; too many things change between your turns so it's hard to apply any strategy

So-so. A bit dry. Hard to form any workable strategy.

I'm giving this a very hesitant nod, could be a screwage fest more so than Sunken City, I need a full play to know for sure

+ Appearantly most 'gamers' are not so fond of this game, but I must say that this is again a good Kramer/Kiesling game.

Actually not bad, but I can´t see myself playing it again in the future because there are enough better games around.

This is a fast and exciting game that actually reminds me of the key elements of the novel. Good design work by Kramer & Kiesling. I can understand that Gamers might be a little cold to this title, but remember this is not designed as a pure strategy game, it should also reflect the theme and story from the novel.

I played a 2-player Switch and it was somehow dissapointing until the Chime was found and the chase begun. I believe it will be more enjoyable with more than 3 players.

Idea for next time: use polls for the +/0/- then people can add comments as they like on top of that

Josh, would you consider adding an Overall Rating = (Net Score/Total Ratings) for each game? The other measures are useful, but this is the one that would be most meaningful to me.

Larry, I won't be adding it since the updates are a lot of work already. I think that information is pretty easy to estimate just by eyeballing the ++++++++++00--- ratios for each game.
