Ever wondered which was the best game released the year you were born?
Well stop wondering! Here is the list of the best games released each year, year after year!

This list is based on the BGG ranking.

For each year I have gotten the best ranked game released and some of the other notable ones!

Note: I've been using the advanced search tool to determine the list and used minor ratings for each year so there might be some games that sould (maybe) be here and aren't.

The list goes back to 1959, the year of Diplomacy, Risk and Memory!
edit: It goes back to 1934 now!

I might go back further later on but for the moment, I hope you enjoy!

edit 2: I've updated year 2008 anf started year 2009 but note that before Essen, year 2009 hasn't got a lot of chances of being very accurate as most games will go out in November with the Essen fair.

I'm not editing every year so there should be some inconsistencies in rankings for older years, I'll change if I notice some but won't make too much effort. The orders aren't very likely to have changed anyway.

edit 3: added 2010, updated years 2009 and 2008 (both had a change of winner!). 30 march 2011. Too early yet to make a 2011 item.

1985 was a good year, led by Pursue the Pennant, the definitive baseball boardgame. Other good ones were Warrior Knights and Tales of the Arabian Nights.

ASL carries on where Squad Leader left off, all part of the lineage of Hex-and-Counter tactical games that are the hallmark of 1970s Avalon Hill releases.

1985 is also the year that Wildlife Adventure (Kramer) came out. I believe if the game came out today it would be popular and be seen as fresh and innovative for people that have not played any derivative games such as Expedition or Santa Fe.

Meaning "more expansions released"...

That's my guess for what it's worth...
Not sure as I don't know either game well...

of course, you can say the same thing for Monopoly.

The games quoted in "other" usually aren't the best games according to ranking but are games that I knew about and thought were pretty famous (like Risk or Uno for 1959). I didn't know about the other games.

Plus: since for every year I used the advanced research for games released in 19xx + rating above 7 (or 6 or 5, the older I went, the lower the minimum rating I used) so there might be some games that got squeezed out...

But if you feel I've missed some pretty important ones, feel free to comment!
(I'm not saying this for you since you obviously did but for some others wondering if they should!)

Awesome. The Germans have a moderate number of units with incredible mobility and medium range combat values. The Russians have emor, ous hordes of units which even the Russians don't now the value of until they enter combat. Most of the Russian units are weak and easily broken but some are the strongest units in the game. Every combat becomes a risk for the Germans while the Russian has to manage chaos.

Excellent game. I played Formula De once. It made me wish I was playing Speed Circuit. Formula De simply isn't better than this in any way.

Panzer Blitz and Panzer Leader were the forerunners of Squad Leader, and were the direct offspring of Tactics and Tactics II.

Actually, Panzer Leader developed from Panzerblitz. Panzerblitz had its origins in "Tactical Game 3" from Simulations Publications, Inc.

"Tactics" and "Tactics II" were operational games, depicting a much larger unit scale than the platoon/company level "Panzerblitz."

PBlitz and PLeader can only be said to derive from "Tactics" in the broad sense that they are map-and-counters wargames.

Isn't this actually a book with rules for games?

Given that, the top three ranked games for 1969 are:

Lines of Action (747) - interestingly, rules for this are in the above book
Anzio (1210)
Monad (2123) - one of the 3M "small box" games

Being a hardcore wargamer at the time, I resisted playing this one for a good while. I'm so glad I matured. This is a great beer'n'pretzels game, and once everyone knows what they're doing, plays very quickly.

Thought the game was a few years older, recall fondly playing it often with my friends and then later my brother when I was a teenager. About twenty years later, a friend and I were poring through the game collection of another friend, and this was the one out of hundreds of games our host had we immediately wanted to play

This one is very sentimental to me. I was a kid in the 60s (now 52). My mom or dad bought (now both gone) me this for Christmas and had no idea what a great game it was. I loved that game - not only because it was a good gaem - but because it was a gift from my parents that I think they knew I'd love.

What's interesting to me about this list is that it seems to take 50 years for a game to really be part of the culture, at least in here in the States. I mean Monopoly, Clue, Risk, Sorry etc, those games are at the tail end of the list. I know we've had Trivial Pursuit join the public consciousness, but man.

Maybe your grandfather has to have played it for it to not be newfangled or something.
