This is my game shelves as of 1st January 2010. I plan to update this every year on the first of every year and show how my collection has grown, shrunk, and changed (through trades and giveaways etc).
The big box is a US Army Grenade box and houses DOOM.
The smaller box beside it is a Romanian Army 8mm Mauser ammo box and it has all the Memoir '44 games I own in it. The Winchester box houses the battlelore pieces, while the original box holds the board, die, etc.

I have just recently moved all my "playable" games to one set of Ikea IVAR shelves in the living room. This doesn't include most of my trade pile, RPGs or miniature games... which is just as well.
My reprensentative game is Sludge, just because I'm the only BGGer who owns that game.
My main game shelf, with a few containers of Heroscape terrain on the right:
Elsewhere in the house are all of my Heroclix figures, and some shelves of trade goods.

Air Baron is my favorite game and the game I default add to geeklists like this to add my own stuff.
There is no rhyme or reason to the way they are shelved. The boxes that lie flat on the top shelf will only lie flat so that's why they're there. The games on the next highest shelf are just below my eye level and usually see the most time, so I guess that shelf is the prime spot.
I have a shelf dedicated to AH Bookcase games on the lower left.
Extra storage containers ready for new games on the lower right.
This image was just taken today - 1/26/10. It has all but 1 Christmas game - Campaign Manager 2008 was bought with a gift card and will be here in a couple days.

New gaming shelves! Huzzah! Two sets of Ikea Expedit in the 5x5 compartment size (only $169 at Ikea Brooklyn!).
Expansions for most games are hidden behind the boxes you can actually see - the shelves are quite deep. The empty shelf third row down, four columns from the right is my cat's night-time sleeping hole. She also dozes there sometimes if I'm working at my desk, which is located on the other side of this shelf. We have a standing arrangement that if I leave a shelf empty for her she won't sleep in my box lids.
We moved back to NYC from overseas about six months ago, and I've been on a buying frenzy. Or, more appropriately, a "rebuying" frenzy - I owned most of this o/s, but had to sell it off before moving home, because board games aren't real space-efficient and therefore are rather costly to ship internationally. So the funds for this veritable orgy of consumerism came from the proceeds of past sales, which means I can convince myself and my wife that it wasn't in any way irresponsible. And I also got to know my local UPS and Fedex drivers REAL well.
Also - another big shout-out to all of the BGGers who were a part of our Reconquista '09/10.
I also have another 60+ games that did get put in the shipping container with our other belongings (including our much-beloved copies of History of the World and Serenissima - too rare to sell!), as well as all of the CCGs, RPGs and most of the miniatures games (as well as our 1500+ books, 1000+ CDs and 3000+ DVDs). When they can be moved here from the staging ground at my brother's Portland home, I'll need to buy more shelves and post more pictures.
And all that this has done is made me realize that if we hadn't spent all of that money on toys, we might actually be able to afford to keep living in NYC.

So here's the latest improvement to my homestead. My custom game shelf built by a friend's brother who happens to be a custom cabinet maker. I apologize up front for the photography. I just got my first digital camera (as I've never been a 'picture person') and I have a lot to learn.
What I Had: The Before
I had a game shelf downstairs in my office cum game room. Standard fare from Lowes. I started keeping my modest collection there. I remember getting to 10 games and thinking, "OK, that's enough variety." LOL.
Then, I had this bar that a friend gave me in my dining area, and as I don't drink, I turned it into the "game bar" and loaded it with my games.
It also offered the convenience of being in the area where we play, so we could just look over at the game bar for options. This soon filled up to the point where I had games stacked on top (forgot to get a picture of that), so I decided to get a storage unit that would feature my games in my dining area.
Long story short, rather than pay a few hundred dollars for a piece of particle board crap from Ikea or Lowes, I commissioned a friend's brother to make me a custom game shelf. It was only a few hundred more than what I would've payed at Ikea/Lowes, but is made of beautiful pine wood with a natural stain and has some really nice custom elements. This is a piece I expect to keep for a long time.
Let's take the tour...
What I Wanted
I wanted deep 20" shelves that could fit longer games so they wouldn't stick out (oh noes! ugly shelf overhang!). I also wanted configurable shelves, and plenty of storage space for game-related stuff. I wanted a nice big flat top where I could put stuff as this is the highest traffic area of my condo. I wanted a “game junk drawer” where I could put bags, plastibands, dice, coasters, etc. I wanted a place for documents such as the current rules I'm reading, player aids, etc. And I wanted something that would look nice as a piece of furniture, not just a utilitarian shelf. Finally, I wanted some game "flair".
What I Got: The After

I need to take some pics with someone in the picture to give you a sense of how big this puppy actually is, but this is 5 feet across. The inside walls have holes for pegs, so the shelves are totally customizable. For now, I've gone with the asymmetrical look, but I have one more shelf I can use.
Across the top, I got the game junk drawer I wanted. I did consider more drawers along the top, but each drawer added cost to the project. I came up with the idea of one drawer but then flaps that can be closed with magnets. The flaps allow me to store game related stuff like card holders, cups, poker chips, etc. but neatly hide them out of sight. Here's a shot with flaps down.
And a closeup of one of the two flap storage areas. Yep, that's my Brother label-maker for game bags (loooove it).
And the game junk drawer -- I asked for partitions so things don't jumble together into one big mess. Turns out they work well as handy spaces for card decks.
As for the "flair", my friend and I made it our project to create custom knobs with game pieces in them. You buy knob molds and resin and drop the pieces in and let them dry. Overall, I'm happy, but we could've made a better choice on the knob mold. We chose one with a decorative ridge, but the ridge ends up obscuring some of the pieces. Not terribly so, but if I were to do it again, I'd choose something with a plain front. But the way this resin stuff smells, I'm in no hurry to do any more molds. When they say, "use in a well ventilated area, they really mean it!"
In any case, I chose distinctive pieces that represented my hobby. From left to right, we have:
And on the side is my handy document holder for whatever rules I'm reading at the moment and/or player aids and such. I like this option as opposed to leaving papers on top of the shelf.

The craftsman who did this fine piece of work is named, Tom Keifer. His website is here. I'm thrilled with the piece and can't stop "playing" with it. My downstairs shelf is now half-filled so I have more room to grow. Guess I gotta buy more games...

This is my game collection. I'd rather keep them as books, trying to avoid damage to the boxes.
I'm always trying to organize them to facilitate the choice of which will be played (and bring some relief to my OCD)... 
The first shelf stores our favorite games:
The second shelf holds the second most wanted games, and my Knizia collection (they didn't fit in the first shelf)
The third shelf holds some great games, but less often used, mostly because we always have more than two playes, and the "war" games sometimes cause some "trouble" and "little real fights"... But we love them too!

I chose Taluva because despite not getting played often, it survived the 'storage purge' that came with our most recent move.
White scroll on top is a friend's prototype I really should get to playing: the rules look good, but I haven't had time to do more than read them and print out the components.

When my gf and I were looking for an appartment, this built-in shelf sealed the deal (the low rent also helped)
Every other month I tend to reorganized them, by theme, genre, weight, etc..
(I also have an hidden shelf where I stack games I'm looking to trade away)

To celebrate my 2 year geek-a-versary (which was on the 24th) I have decided to post some pics of my recently christened gaming space. To think, 2 years ago I had just ordered my first games: Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne, and Zooloretto. And now look where I am!
The space I am now using to play games in started out as a partial garage conversion for an art studio space for me. We built it but I didn't use it a lot due to time and not quite being totally comfortable in there. Mostly comfortable, but not quite....
For a long time one entire wall was left completely blank, waiting for the right treatment.....and when I started running out of game storage space in the family room I KNEW what that blank wall was waiting for:
After re-arranging the room a bit, adding a table and the games, I'm feeling much more comfortable in the room.
Note these aren't ALL my games but these are most of my 'gamer' games. The more family friendly ones are still in the family room (sorry, no pictures of those yet)

Unfortunately, as you can see, my art studio stuff is mostly pushed off to this side as my focus has been more on games lately. I'll give this a whirl.
I chose Axis and Allies because it was the first real 'epic' board game I purchased. My buddy and I played a TON of this in high school. However, we played mostly RPGs until the late '90s when I started branching out into more table top miniatures. I stayed with miniatures until about 2007 when I met up with some local board gamers. My collection exploded after that.
After trying different ways of storage I found these cabinets at Lowe's (a home improvement store). They are working great.
The main game cabinet. The large card box on the left top contains about 5000 LoTR CCG cards received in a recent trade (still unplayed). The rubbermaid on top contains a very nice copy of Dune, Roads & Boats, & cetera and also excess BattleLore figures. Many games are shelved behind the ones in the picture. I am trying to restrain myself from buying more games and just keeping the entire collection in the cabinets.
This cabinet is just to the right of the main cabinet, but on a different wall. Between the two is a small closet that contains most of the kids' games. The rubbermaid behind the guitar is full of Heroscape and the shipping box contains hundreds of SimCity card game cards.
Axis and Allies itself is stored separately because my nephew would always dig in the box and want to play. He's probably old enough now to play with but I don't know if I'll ever really play A&A again. I'd probably try to get him to play something from the photos.

I like the look of ScottE's arrangement, with those low-slung wide shelves and the dark-contrast poster above. For now, this is the state of the boardgames wall in my game-storing room:
It cannot be seen, but the wall to the left has a shelf system full of miniature games like Blood Bowl, A&A Miniatures, and Memoir'44. The wall to the right has another shelf system crammed with the detritus of my CCG days, such as Battletech CCG, 7th Sea, MECCG, Deadlands, and MLB Showdown. Integrating all these into a single coherent library will be a pleasant task.
I've recently spent many months constructing this Merchant of Venus set, so naturally it is the current holder of the title "most prized boardgame".

Catan was one of the first Eurogames I was exposed to. Having played it separately, my brother and I quickly grabbed the Gallery Edition from Toys R Us one night as we were searching for a game worthwhile to buy (an arguably futile effort at that store).
My game collection is paltry compared to many, but I've only been actively buying/playing for less than a year now. I hope to have completely run out of storage space by this time next year.
(Note: I have a few more games in the drawers, but they're not worthy of being out on display. I'm talking to you Catch Phrase and Cranium.)

I chose Mystery of the Abbey because it's my favorite game, of course! Now onto the Pr0n:
This is the overview of the room. We converted about 2/3 of our garage. We also have a fridge, a wall A/C, and a TV in here (not pictured). It's nice having friends in the construction business.
Closeup of the shelves. I was going to sort games into box size, category etc. but I am so used to the location of the games now, it seems sort of pointless. Unless I have to squeeze more in, of course!
Shelves #4 and #5. I did categorize somewhat, as you can see here with the party games.
I am extremely happy with our game room and love showing it off to family and friends. Now to get some serious game players over!

I have a very small games room and shelves just wont fit properly, so i put up some 3" shelves along the main wall and over the door and window. I'm pleased with how it turned out.
And the one shelf that i'm able to fit in the room. For the games that are too big, too small, or just don't like to be tipped..
I chose Die Macher because it's one of my favorites.. can't get enough plays in (which unfortunately isn't very much atm.. *sigh*)

My friend Jon has been nagging me to post to this list but I never seemed to have a camera handy. I compromised today and took happy snaps on my phone.
I chose Carcassonne for this entry as I still remember the day we bought it. We were on the way to see a film and stopped for a drink. While we waited, I unshrinked the game - and I remember being delighted not so much by the game (which I had played and enjoyed already) but by OMG THE CATALOGUE OF ALL THE OTHER GAMES WE COULD GET. And I sat there, and I planned to buy them all.
I don't think I've achieved that yet, but we do have a fairly decent collection. We bought new shelving and reorganised things in our house this year.
Most of the games are in the dining room. Having most of our games in here means that they're really in our face, and I think it does encourage us to play more games. And having them on shelves rather than in haphazard stacks means that we can usually find the game we want to play!
The shelves don't look that tall in the picture but they are well over 2m high.
There is another large shelving unit with big square box games in Otto's room
(We made a sort of storage area/corridor on the way into her room - there's an old bookshelf in there at the moment which is temporary - I think the photo shows a corner of it)
And we have two smaller shelves for small-box games: kids' games are in the corridor, other cardgames in the corner of the dining room.
The shelves which were originally for games - sort of a trial run of this shelving range - are now mostly used for glassware and other house stuff, but we've kept the card games in the middle

I will be building a new game room soon. Probably will turn it into list as well. The one right now, is way too small...
Also we are going to move, so I can start from scratch...When I built these I had 500 games, now I have 760 games and the shelves are full, few more...then I have to build new ones.
