(and my first geeklist...)
Before 2002, I did not play too many board games (well, since my childhood). Board games meant Capitaly (a Hungarian version of Monopoly), Pachisi and chess to me (of which I could never play the latter), so I just wasn't that inspired. Then in 2002 I learned Carcassonne and Catan and said wow.

Before 2008, board game meant Blokus, Carcassonne (&Hunters and Gatherers), Catan (and some other Teuber titles like Candamir, Elasund and Domaine) to me (and I played Metro, Alhambra, San Marco and Backgammon at friends, and that's it). I was a casual board gamer who did like these games but did not know too much about other games.

Then, at Christmas 2007 something changed…
Well, actually two things changed. First, I started to become a boardgame addict. Second, at Christmas Eve we realized my wife was pregnant with our first child…

This is a chronological list of games I played, bought and got to know, and other stories (and some personal pics) of how I became a board game addict in the past one year. You may say it's an evolution (or "coming-of age") story with quite many games considering my previous boardgaming history.

(sorry for my bad English if you find grammar mistakes...)

Of course I got some games for Christmas (but probably this year I won't).
This one was one of them (I had some missing meepleCarcassonne meepleexpansions on my list). It's not bad, but it's more of the agressive type expansion, which means we don't play it too often with my wife who is my nr.1. playing partner.

This one was also under the Xmas tree. We found it to be the best expansion since Traders & Builders; these and Inns&Cathedrals are the three expansions that are in our 'base set' of

Christmas. Nice change after Teuber and Wrede titles. It was also on my wishlist as I wanted to try it after I had heard of it. Took it to parties in the first half of 2008, had lots of fun with it. Nice party game for fantasy-lovers.

My friends said “We did like all the Spiel des Jahres titles we tried so we thought you would like this one too” and gave me as a late Xmas present on 31st December at our New Year’s Eve party in our flat. We tried it and did not really fall in love with it. But kept trying and after some games something clicked. I started to see the strategy in a game that seemed purely a game of luck first.

I started checking boardgamenews and other websites and found the first pics of Aquaretto. And that already looked better. And I felt something is happening: I started to feel enthusiasm for a game that wasn’t even released then!

As I saw the expansions worked (I started to look for appropriate cardboard and glue) I downloaded an expansion for a Teuber title I had in my collection, too. I tried it only in a two-player game in which the large buildings weren't so useful - but won the game using the 3-square buildings; it's a great addition to a good game.

A non-gamer friend of mine bought this one “just because it looked good”. Indeed, it does. Also very strong style; we love playing it and listening to Buena Vista Social Club at the same time. We had some parties, the only problem being it is not a game that can be quickly explained to non-gamers; also it’s not a short game (but a beautiful and really good one – I learned about Puerto Rico only later).

(that's my wife in the bottom left corner, with a 3-month-old baby in her belly...)
And in my self-blog I started writing entries about boardgaming(in Hungarian)...

This one was the game we gave as a present to the friends who gave us Zooloretto. In early springtime we visited them and played Through the Desert. This was the very first Knizia game I have ever played; I really liked it even if I find it really ugly. I have played it with them quite often since; I also started to play it online.
We even played it with them in warm summertime - two guys and two pregnant girls -, at lake Balaton, thankfully close to water - we could see how good it is for us that we don't live in deserts

And finally, this November I also had to buy it to be able to play it with my wife (to realise this game goes surprisingly fast with two). It's the ugliest game in my collection but one of the greatest ones.

When I learned in April that the very first Hungarian boardgaming magazine is underway (Tabula magazine - 4 issues per year, downloadable from http://www.tabulamagazin.hu/magazin.html – yes, it’s in Hungarian but with nice pics, partly by myself) I contacted the editor. I shew him the link of my blog entries about boardgaming and he said “welcome on board”, so the very first game I had written about was El Grande, an old-time classic, for the very first issue.

At this time I started to feel really excited about the possibilities of board games. This (and El Grande itself) lead me first to try online games (I plan to write a geeklist about my first year as an online board gamer after the first year ends update: see it here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/41098), then, as it was escalating, I went to a board gaming club one Wednesday night…

This one was the game I tried at the club the first night. I wasn’t blown away by SA though; I thought it is an okay game with a trendy mechanism (remember it was not long after I learned Cuba – and it's not only the Michael Menzel graphics) but with too much luck. (I am not one of those who is against luck in games - but in a game of this complexity I'd say it's really too much.)

Next week I went to the club again, but this time I stayed much longer – until 11 p.m. (and it would be like this quite often after this time). I really liked this one. Simple trick-taking cardgame-like mechanism that just works perfectly. Actually I do like its graphics too, even if the colors are not distinctive enough. Since August I do own this one too.

Well that night Toledo was the third one I tried and the very first one I did not like at all. I had already tried this one online but had to try it “live” too (in the club). So some days later, in the beginning of May I had to spend some of my annual bonus for this one as it is simply the best game I have tried this year. I was afraid she would not like it as it's quite a heavy game but she, who likes sudoku and card games, did accept the mental challenge this game provides. She really liked it after the third play (which she won). She was really exhausted by the end of the game and she said 'It's... a VERY good game.'

I also wrote about it in the second issue of Tabula - http://www.tabulamagazin.hu/uploads/files/pdf/tabula02gyors.... - that was released in July (I also wrote an article about all the Carcassonne expansions in that issue – well the Carcassonne: Catapult was not released then but I still consider Catapult being a late April’s fool joke from Mr. Wrede).

It was the second Knizia game I played and I loved.
(And yes, by this time I was the co-editor of Tabula.)

As much as I did not like Tribune, I did enjoy this one. And it's not because I won our first game; I usually prefer those games where it is really hard for me to win (e.g. I won the first play of Stone Age but didn't find it so great). I like its mechanism, I like its ideas. I also play it online since it's available (although I think it's better with friends; it's too dry online). But I don't buy this one as it needs gamers and gamer thinking, and my company of friends is usually not full of gamers.

This time our wedding anniversary (in May) was not about surprise presents: weeks before we agreed she would get Gilmore Girls Season 5 and I would get Ticket to Ride: Europe… I did not play this game before but heard it’s good so I wanted to try it. Looking at the statistics I also realized this one (well, this series) is at least as popular (nr. of games played) as Catan and Carcassonne. So I thought it would be a success.
And it is. It had soon become her favourite, as well as the ultimate game with friends: each of my gamer and non-gamer friends did like this game so much that when they visit us they definitely want to play this one.

I even took this one with me to the trip when we participated in a choir fest in Germany in the end of June (she was 7 months pregnant then); we played it during the night in Ehrwald, Austria (under Mt. Zugspitz in the Alps, in a place that looks a lot like the one depicted on the cover picture).

Next time in the club: we tried Keltis (well the game formerly known as Keltis shake ) as it was nominated for Spiel des Jahres but it id not have a high rating here (it was at 6.52 which is almost the same as its present rating). And tried it again and again. And we found it was a really nice filler game, fun to play, and I still don’t understand its relatively low rating. And this autumn I brought this one home.
From this day I was hoping Keltis would win SdJ instead of Stone Age, even if this one had 1.1 points less in user rating. And I was happy to see it happen.
This is also a game that everyone I play with likes. It's not the greatest and most original game of all time but a game that gets better and better with time, and a game that every non-gamer enjoys - even my 67-year-old mother does (while looking after the baby).

I think that's what Spiel des Jahres is about.
(The pic about the SdJ cover was made by me; I also wrote an article about Lost Cities and Keltis in the third issue of Tabula - http://www.tabulamagazin.hu/uploads/files/pdf/tabula03gyors.... )
