With the myriad sources of game news coming out of hundreds of publishers, large and small, it's difficult for even the informed gamer to know which releases to look forward to. This list is an attempt to aggregate what the BGG community as a whole is anticipating, omitting my own personal biases as much as I can.

Basically, this is a list of new releases sorted by the number of wishlists they are on. I'm using BoardGameNews's excellent Gone Cardboard page as my master list of releases. Of course, BGN only highlights North American releases, so I'll do the same. I'm going to omit reprints of old games, except in the case where they're different enough to warrant new BGG game entries.

In any case, in the age of information overload, hopefully this list can help focus our rabid obsessions on games truly deserving of the hype. If there's enough interest, I may make this sort of list a regular feature.

#1: Age of Conan: The Strategy Board Game
629 Wishlists
Francisco Nepitello, Marco Maggi & Roberto Di Meglio
Fantasy Flight Games
2 to 4 players
Expected release: February 2009

This figures to be another epic game in the Fantasy Flight tradition. In this game, you will take the role of one of four kingdoms, increasing your power by vying with the other kingdoms directly, as well as influencing Conan to undertake adventures on your kingdom's behalf.

Color me guilty. I want this. I like the concept of how Conan is implemented as something of an abstract, capricious force. If he were actually playable (which would be kind of odd in a strategy game), everyone would want to be Conan.

Indeed. This looks great. Love WotR - if Age of Conan can come close to the same successful implementation of theme it will be fantastic.

As a playtester, let me say I am keenly anticipating playing the finalized game with all the gorgeous little bits! Honestly, 90 minutes is really on the low side for play time. A good, meaty game will usually take between 2-3 hours.

This is a reworking of Martin Wallace's classic train game, Age of Steam. Supposedly, this game will be more forgiving than the original Age of Steam, but at the same time not subject to the imbalances of Railroad Tycoon.

Age of Steam is my #1 game - but I plan to buy this a try it several times before I do any comparison. I'd really rather support Martin and if this as least 90% as good then I'll move over and leave the other to the dustbin of history.

8/20/09 Edit: Not! AoS is so much better that it is my game of choice between these two.

I playtested this at Gencon 2008. It seemed like a pretty nice revision at the time. It had the element from RRT where you could not go bankrupt. Otherwise it was very similar to the original game. I don't know if I prefer this new version or the old but I felt it might be different enough to warrant a purchase. I am interested to see what other elements are added.

Like FFG's other Euro titles (Ingenious, Through the Desert, Blue Moon City, etc.), this one isn't being designed in-house, but rather is being imported from a European publisher.

Yes, but unless I'm mistaken, all the other FFG imports were of established games. This is more like a Rio Grande effort, a joint production with a European publisher of a new design.

Although I don't bother much with "wishlist" entries personally, this is at the top of my list. I sincerely hope it doesn't fall off FFG's schedule amidst the tidal wave of new releases they have coming. Been waiting for such a game for a very long time.

I wonder if expansions will be offered for more players. The Classic "Kingmaker" has the same subject matter but is multi-player. (but of course is not a war game in the traditional sense).

Despite similarities in title and art, this game has little to do with Vlaada Chvatil's Through the Ages. In fact, this game was designed by Matt Leacock of Pandemic fame. In this game, players will roll and re-roll dice to gain resources that allow them to roll more dice in subsequent turns, gain special abilities, or just score points. However, getting too greedy with dice rolls can lead to catastrophe.

No, it's very simply the Civ Dice Game. Civ, as in Francis Tresham's Civilization. The parallels (which Matt put in deliberately) are remarkable for a dice game, although I suspect they'll be somewhat disguised in the final product. I really enjoyed the prototype; I'm curious to see how FRED developed this.

I didn't play the early versions, though I saw it being played. I don't know what changes were made, but it is fun and the production is gorgeous.

First of all, this expansion, the base game and the whole Tannhäuser range are in fact a french product that are simply translated and distributed in the U.S. by FFG.

I have the base game, which I enjoy a lot as well as the rabid fanbase the game has, and I'm not aware of anything in the base game that needs to be fixed, there are FAQs and clarifications that might help you interpret better the rules, but there's nothing broken with this game at the time being.

What this expansion does, is simply introduce the russians to the conflict so it's a nice addition as you'll get a different squad to fight with along a new board.

Veritas truly has a unique theme: players represent "truths" trying to preserve themselves in the books of medieval monasteries. Unfortunately, these monasteries have a penchant for catching on fire. Further details on this game, including release information, are somewhat of a mystery, though, and it has been in the pipeline since Essen 2007.

Out this week, apparently. Now this is one I was sure had slipped into 2009 but didn't. I've got a too-good-to-cancel Amazon preorder in on this, but things have been pretty quiet about it, Combat Commander's been eating all my WWII-tactical time, and I just got Conflict of Heroes. So ToI sits, mostly unloved. cry

Personally, I find Combat Commander to be a far better game--the creation of a real game-play story, the super quick set-up (we have a poster frame with the tracks and some extrea info permanently set up, and we just pop in the new map), the VASTLY superior scnearios and number of scenarios, the generally quicker playtime, the greater feeling of the challenges of being a commander with your troops not always within your control, the real multiple paths to victory...I could go on and on. You're not missing much by leaving ToI on the shelves.

Hopefully this allows for slightly faster games. This is a fun game that is just a bit too long to see as often as I'd like...

I'm sure it's unbelievably good. However I can't get the base SC game on the table so this is low on my "buy" list. My freinds can be so lame at times...

If only you lived a little farther East...

We've played a few times, and recently got a few more people interesting in playing. I'm excited about the expansion.

I'm mainly looking forward to Planet Steam. I'm surprised it didn't make this list.

To me, the list would be more useful if it included more games that my fellow BGGers were anticipating rather than one person's opinion (so I could see if they're on my radar as well).

This is statistics, not opinion. From the original post:

Basically, this is a list of new releases sorted by the number of wishlists they are on.
