I get to play games in a lot of different settings. As a teacher, I have a pretty big selection of games in my classroom that I play with my students during occasional extra time, or sometimes to help improve skills. I have a regular gaming group with whom I play once or twice a week. I play games with my wife in the evenings, with my kids on the weekends or in the afternoons, and once a week with my mom, sister and brother-in-law. We also play a couple times a month with other couples that we know from church.

This translates to a lot of games played, though a lot of these are lighter, dexterity type games that are easy to play many times. This is the first time I've tried doing one of these lists, hopefully it is enjoyable to look through.

13 plays (12 of Keltis, 1 of Lost Cities: the Board Game)

It took about 10 plays for me to decide that I don't really like this game. The scores were never very close, and it seems like there's too much luck in the card draws. With Lost Cities there's much more tension, as there's a seemingly higher probability of drawing the card you want, and the endgame timing can be tricky. However, playing the Lost Cities version of the boardgame was a little better. By simply making the scores higher, it seemed like you were being more productive. The theme (though still pasted on) makes sense too. But I'd still prefer just regular old Lost Cities.

Bongo Kongo does not like it when you punch his backpack, stealing his hard-earned coconuts. His retaliation is the high point of the game, seeing your opponents' monkeys get launched by the thrust of his club of retribution.

I had been looking for this old Michael Schacht game for a while, then noticed that they have it in stock up at Le Valet d'Coeur. This is a cool speed pattern recognition game. What elevates it over the others is that you can lose pieces that you've already earned. So as you approach victory, you start cautiously watching your own tiles, and everyone else aspires to take them away. All this while you're supposed to be searching for other ones. Playing with the harder rules is too hard for me.

This is, like Say What, another one that's more like a toy than a game. But it's pretty fun for two players, as you frantically try to keep up with the game. I think there are other types of games like this where you throw a ball around instead of just sliding discs, the color-recognition technology that powers these games is kind of cool.

These pens are terrible - I think only 4 of ours actually work. The idea for this game is so simple yet it works wonderfully. It's great whether you know the people or not. It's also a lot of fun to see people's reactions to what the person chooses as the best answer. "Butt slice" is a memorable answer that I remember seeing crop up quite a bit in a recent game.

Wish I could get my hands on the Scandinavian or Brazilian edition. I love this as a 3 player game, though a recent match left me cold. I realized that the main reason I like it with 3 players is that usually I play with someone that undermines his own paintings, thus usually creating a situation where there is a pretty intense competition for placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd. When no painting is in danger of not placing, the game loses a lot of interest. Usually my only objective in the game is to put myself in the situation where I only have, say, a Lite Metal doubler. This is the fourth Lite Metal card. Does someone want to lay down a fifth to close it out? No? OK, then I'll take the card for free.

I played this quite a few times with Michael Schacht online, even beating him once or twice! I thought I had the game figured out, and then as we kept playing, I started losing worse and worse. Now I have no idea what to do when I play the game. I find it relaxing, as it plays quickly and the decisions are quick while the options are few.

Good old Puerto Rico - I don't know if I'll ever tire of this game. The whole factory strategy still seems really powerful with the people I play with (mainly my family), but at times I force myself to try another angle. We can play this in 45 - 55 minutes, which feels just about right. If I was playing 1.5 hour games, there's no way I'd feel like playing this very often.

I think this game has a minor turn order problem. Usually the start player has a pretty big advantage, in that eventually someone will mess up, clearing the way for the start player to win, as long as it isn't the start player that messed up. I thought that this would be a good game for my kids, but the magnets actually scared my daughter. I still think it's pretty fun though.

After one play last year I completely dismissed this game as too easy. Then I happened to figure out that there was a piece of cardboard that is packaged underneath the ice floe as a stabilizer that is meant to be removed before you start playing. D'oh! The game is much better now, though it still suffers from the same problem that Rattlesnake has. If you go after the first person to mess up, you win.

At this point I'm a little burnt out on Saint Petersburg. The new cards are interesting, but I think I'm just tired of the game in general. The sycophant seems overpowered, and we've changed the cost to 5 rubles instead of 1. An early judge still seems really powerful too.

Campaign Trail is a severely underrated game, my favorite election game (yes, even over Die Macher and 1960). For being essentially roll-and-move, it is surprisingly thematic, forcing you to choose where to best spend your time. You have to constantly watch your opponents, and table talk is required. Do I need to come back to Ohio again? The event cards are a minor complaint, as a player can really get hosed by bad luck with the cards, but I have seen good play outweigh card luck. You must play quickly, at pretty much Dominion speed, with only 15 - 20 seconds between turns. Especially with the election this year, we had a lot of fun with this game. If only Bob Barr had been as lucky in the real election as he was in our games.
