We all have phrases that make us cringe or wish bad things on the writer. Here is your chance to vent (or just have a bit of fun!) and, at the same time, maybe win some Geekgold (it's been a while since my last competition).

The rules are simple:

1. Add the phrase that makes you cringe, along with a suitable game reference/illustration.

2. Vote for any other entries that you particularly like, agree with, find amusing etc. You do not have to add an entry to vote, but it is considered more sporting if you do.

3. Compo ends on Sunday 11th January at some point. At that time, a winner will be declared (heavily, but not solely, influenced by your voting) and 30GG awarded to the winner. Bonus prizes may also be awarded.

Winner: James Ludlow, for "I could care less". It really seems to have resonated with a lot of people, doesn't it!

Thanks for making this list so much fun, guys!

"Drinking the Kool-Aid."

I hear this mostly concerning sports and teams following what a coach is saying/doing ("the players are really drinking the kool-aid"), but it comes up all over the place.

And how many people that use it even realize it is making light of the Jonestown incident? Very few, I would guess.

Well, I lost myself. here I am, playing the French side, and things are going to hell. I let slip the Words of War, and was spitting out curse words that would make my Momma slap me.

"Sorry Charlotte, Pardon my French"

I pushed Soult and 4 SPs into Brussels...

My father likes to use this one, especially when he's about to say something especially offensive, as in "Not for nothin', but we should just drop an A-Bomb on that mountain the Ay-rabs worship".

By "that mountain", my dad apparently means Mecca. So yeah, at the very least this phrase is guilty by association.

Irregardless

A double negative all in one word.

Some people know what irrespective means.

Some people know what regardless means.

Some people were rightfully sent to the corner with a dunce cap for using big words that they didn't understand.

Some people unsatisfied with the dunce cap, took it a step further and decided to just make up big, smart sounding words all on their own.

I heard this mainly during my college days and could never, for the life of me, figure out why it was used. Who decided to pull it out of the hat of useless expressions? If you know, let me in on it. They owe me some aspirin.

People seem to use it as a non-sequiter saying, "I'm done with this conversation/idea. Now, I'm off to la-la land. See you when I get back!"
