And so, at the start of the second year of the return of the mighty Derk from the wilderness, he sent out a decree through all of BoardGameGeek: to counteract the unholy influence of the Cult of the New, each BoardGameGeek user will reduce his or her collection of games to six and a score. One shall be chosen from among the top ten in the rankings, one from the second ten in the rankings, and so on until five and a score have been gathered. For the final game, each user shall have the opportunity to choose a single game from outside of the top 250.

Fortunately, this is just a theoretical exercise. But if it weren't - which would you keep? For the first 25, please answer the polls below. For the 26th, just add it to the list. Kvetching about having to leave a favorite behind - or about an unimpressive set of ten - can be added through comments.

(Please note that polls don't always work well in geeklists; if one acts as if you have already answered, when you haven't, just click on "Questions" and make your selection - it should be registered properly.)

I couldn't live without an OCS game, and this sucker will keep me busy.

As for the rest:

Through the ages

I love this game, nice and deep

Shogun

A heavier Euro, quite a bit of fun

Combat Commander: Europe

I like tactical games, I like card games, and this will play faster than ASL

Tichu

The best 4 player trick taking game ever. I own three decks.

ASL

Endless fun, 100's of scenarios. from the 1-2 hour to the 1-2 day variety.

Acquire

A classic quick, light and fun

Roads & Boats

I've not played this bad boy, it's sitting on my shelf though, and from everything I've heard I'll love it.

Friedrich
Loved the card driven combat in this title, very neat

1830

No luck train game, can be brutal, always fun.

Zertz

I'd love to have the whole GIPF series, but alas, it wasn't meant to be. I'll live with just this one.

Times Up

One of my favorite party games, this one is always good for laughs

Princes of the Renaissance

Another meaty euro, I like this one a lot, and is one of the two on the list, that I don't own, not sure why.

Medici

Great quick auction game, I like it better than RA

MTG

This is definitely on the top of my list, if I could afford to keep up wiht MTG, I would. The game play is complex, and very interesting, I've no problem playing many many games of magic.

Keythedral

Very nice Settlers of Catan like game, about the same complexity, but plays smoother.

Cosmic Encounter

A bit of nostalgia for this one, I spent many an evening playing this. Not sure if it is as good as I remember, I've not picked up the new edition yet.

Breakout Normandy

Wasn't much exciting in this bracket, I chose this one, it isn't bad, but probably wouldn't hit the table.

Scepter of Zavandor

I love this game, much better than Outpost, and much cheaper.

Mu and More

Great 5 player trick taking game, the other games aren't terrible either.

Dungeon Twister

A very surprising two player game, very abstract, with a weird theme if that makes any sense at all. I think the theme detracts from it's sales.

No Thanks

Very light very quick card game, great for filler.

Empires in Arms

Yes I'll never play it, but damn it is GOOD! I spent 6 months playing it, and loved every minute.

Starship Catan

Another weak choice, my wife enjoys this one, It's not bad, I'd rather have other titles.

Ubongo

Nice puzzle game, I didn't choose Ricochet Robots, so this has to be on the list.

Revolution: The Dutch Revolt

Francis Tresham is the MAN! I missed out on Civilization, can't miss out on this one.

I thought about Factory Fun or Expedition, but Prophecy gives me a bigger change of pace from the other 26 games I chose. Those were:

Race for the Galaxy
Age of Steam
Goa
Tichu
Ticket to Ride
Carcassonne
Mr. Jack
The Traders of Genoa
Durch die Wüste
Indonesia
Robo Rally
Vikings
Santiago
Magic: the Gathering
Attika
EastFront
Alhambra (don't even own it, this grouping sucks)
Formula De
Wits & Wagers
Titan
Lord of the Rings
Java
Cosmic Encounter
For the People (traded mine, but I'll want a CDG)
Himalaya
Prophecy

I ditched my #3 and #4 from my top ten in favor of my current #5, because Race for the Galaxy is more flexible than Twilight Struggle or E&T.

I also left out some favorite party games like Time's Up, Say Anything, and Thingamajig. They're easy enough to fake without owning the actual game. I did choose Wits & Wagers (in a tough decision over Liberte and History of the World) so I will have at least one "proper" party game.

If we're not allowed expansions then I would change a few picks:

Hannibal over Age of Steam
Bohnanza over Magic
1856 over Formula De
Mah-Jongg over Lord of the Rings
Samurai Swords over Himalaya

Anyway, it surprises me that I would so casually toss aside some of my more nostalgic games, but for my final game, I think it's gotta be Rum & Pirates. I have never been at loss for people to play it with.

Most of my choices were pretty simple. All but the last set had something I've played and enjoyed. There were few difficult choices but there were a couple of instances where I had to put some good thought into it. Some I chose because I had to pass up something similar further up the list.

I found I tended to chose games in the lower percentiles in each group for the most part.

Source of the Nile would be my #26. A great game that can be played solo, or with others. It can be as short or as long as you like and it has a fun storytelling aspect to it also if you feel like it.

All games I've played - and with a few exceptions (see: Chess) games I've rated highly.

1. Race for the Galaxy - by a small margin over Through the Ages. In the end, I'd rather have Race for the Galaxy and Titan than Glory to Rome and Through the Ages.
2. Brass - I'm more likely to get it to the table than Age of Steam.
3. Go - over TI3.
4. Le Havre - more than makes up for missing Agricola in the first selection.
5. Taj Mahal - over the sentimental favourite Dune. I can get much of the Dune flavour playing Cosmic Encounter.
6. Here I Stand - with a nod to the vastly more playable Acquire.
7. Descent - since I'm taking Schotten Totten later.
8. Antiquity - with no real competition.
9. Thebes - since it's my lovely daughter's favourite. And that despite the fact my boys were lobbying for Starcraft: The Board Game.
10. Indonesia - though I'd've been happy with La Città too. Blue Moon City wasn't close in 3rd.
11. Traumfabrik - though it's possible I would have kept Space Alert if I'd ever had the opportunity to play it.
12. Princes of the Renaissance - by a huge margin over Web of Power.
13. Pitchcar - since it's my youngest's favourite.
14. Tinner's Trail - though I could have happily kept Bohnanza, too.
15. Schotten Totten - its margin over Keythedral was dramatically larger than Battle Line over Descent.
16. Chicago Express - preferred FFG's Cosmic Encounter, but the Mayfair version had much weaker challengers later.
17. China - since I couldn't keep Web of Power.
18. Zooloretto - as the best of a bad lot.
19. Wits & Wagers - I might prefer Liberté, but my family will play Wits & Wagers any time.
20. Titan - Won't really miss Glory to Rome since I have Race for the Galaxy; but Zendo is a hard cut.
21. Rumis - over the Lord of the Rings co-op game.
22. Chess - somewhat strangely, given my rating, over Java and Perikles.
23. Cosmic Encounter(Mayfair) - to make up for missing the FFG edition and Dune.
24. Ubongo - since it's a family favourite.
25. Ricochet Robots - due to lack of enthusiasm for the rest of the field.

Bonus: Magic Realm. Given it's my highest-ranked game, I could hardly do otherwise.

I picked this game because it seems to scratch an itch that nothing else I selected out of the first 25 games manages to scratch. It is easy to teach and everyone enjoys pointing guns at their friends & loved ones!

By the way, the the hell is wrong with you people? A geek list asking you to list games outside of the top 250 and no one has added Busen Memo yet? Was there a BGG New Years Resolution of some sort that I missed? I have come to expect a certain level of low end predictable humor and this is so disappointing.

Hmmm... 9 levels where I don't actually own any of the games... so in order to "cut" my collection, I'm going to have to buy 9 games! cool

Okay, my list [including off-list substitutions of games I actually own]:

1 Race for the Galaxy
2 Pandemic
3 Twilight Imperium 3 [Galactic Emperor]
4 Settlers of Catan
5 Taj Mahal [Blackbeard]
6 Arkham Horror
7 Battleline
8 Antiquity [Age of Mythology]
9 Starcraft: the Board Game
10 Fury of Dracula
11 Republic of Rome
12 Vegas Showdown [Betrayal at House on the Hill]
13 Heroscape: Rise of the Valkyrie
14 Magic the Gathering
15 Nexus Ops
16 Cosmic Encounter [Munchkin Cthulhu]
17 Alhambra [Tsuro]
18 Zooloretto [Buffy the Vampire Slayer]
19 Downfall of Pompeii [Kill Dr. Lucky]
20 Dungeon Twister
21 Lord of the Rings
22 Amyitis
23 Bang!
24 Warrior Knights [Blood Royale]
25 Mystery Rummy: Jack the Ripper

Games I'd keep in a secret stash: A Game of Thrones, Civilization, Blue Moon
Game I'm still po'd was stollen from me: Dune

And my 26th? The most fun dungeon crawler I've played yet. Yes, it could use a little tweaking, and yes it helps that I'm a huge fan of the webcomic but this game has dungeon crawler crunchiness, in a light, humorous package. And it includes Munchkin-like player-interaction mechanic that minimizes down-time and ensures the game isn't multi-player solitaire.

Check with me next year and this list might be a bit different.
