After spending 3-4 days trying to figure out how to play Ghost Stories, I have decided that it has one of the worst rulebooks that I ever had to deal with. However, it is still not the worst that I have encountered. I am interested in finding out which rulebooks have puzzled, frustrated and just generally annoyed the BGG community.

One of the worst rulebook I've ever read.

Fortunately, there are unofficial update of the rules. This rules version clarifies and expands on the original rules while also incorporating the FAQ's.

Thanks to Walt Mulder.

The cuteness of the components is in inverse proportion to the worst rules i have ever read. Traded away after reading the rules three times.

Once I attempted to learn this game to PBEM, with a real life in between. Never succeeded - while thinking I understood something, forgot more - because of way too many little modifiers, special cases and exceptions. Ted Raicer's "Triumph of Chaos" is similar ?

This one is fine (with usual GMT caveats of forward referencing definitions/rules that haven't been explained yet - but that's just a personal bugbear of mine...), except for....the water crossing rules.

I can just about cope with the control of rivers rules, and as you read the water crossing rules they seem ok. Then you read the examples, and it seems to completely contradict the rules. and worse the examples don't even seem to be self-consistent.

Of all the games I own, and of all the badly laid out rules I've ever been through, this is the only section of rules where I genuinely do not understand how they are played, no matter how many times I go over it, or try it with the game in front of me. Desperate to play this, so if it ever gets to the table, I think I'll just use simplified house rules for water crossing...

This is a beautiful game with a wonderful theme. The game itself is heavily luck-based from both the cards and dice. The bits are lovely though. Nice little ships. Antiqued map for a game board. Glass gems come in a velvet bag. The component tray holds everything properly for both play and storage. The rule book sucks though. There are four pages of very brief text. The total rules would fit on a single 8 1/2 inch page. The problem comes in that there are no example given at all. The first time out we had to make guesses on whether a particular modifier applied to movement, combat or both. We ended up studying each individual card to determine what we thought was the corect interpretation.

I've been playing games for a while now, but I just finally got Settlers (4th ed.) a couple weeks ago. Wow, what a terrrrible rulebook. The game is painfully simple, yet this rulebook tries to make it really hard. Separate glossary in the back... rules split up... unclear wording.

Years of reading wonderful Rio Grande rules and then I get the first/best/greatest/most-well-know game ever... and the rules are completely spastic/unclear/silly. Bizarre.

Are all Mayfair games this bad ?

I'll agree that several of the previous titles in this list have "bad" rules. Some even breach the threshold of "terrible." But there's few if any that can compare to this steaming pile of poo. While the game's graphics were stunning for the timeframe they were released, the 'rules' are little more than an advisory which tell the buyer/player to create their own rules if they want to play the game. Why nobody brought suit against FGA for this scam I'll never know.

The Mogodon of rulebooks. Fails because of verboseness and inaccessibility. Shame because there is probably a good game struggling to get out. Fortunately, the living rules are better laid out, but I'm not sure it's worth learning 185 pages..

The Warhammer 40K rulebook is an affront to environmentalists everywhere: they've managed to spread out 15 pages of useful information over 300 pages of fluff and photos.

Sure there's a table of content and an index, but if you're looking to move and shoot while getting shot at -in a vehicle, you'll have to skip through 7 or 8 pages of 'information'.

Terrible. I've read some of the rulebooks for the games posted on this geeklist, but none truly compare to the vacuous tar of the Warhammer 40K Player Guide

When it comes to bad rulebooks, Explorium is right there. In the first edition, the pictures are cheap stock photos, there is a lot of utterly useless 'flavor' text that tastes awful. The actual rules are kind of weird. And bad. You should find the rules and read them. It's an experience to say the least... This is a bad rulebook for a bad game. Heck, at least they try some humor in there. It is on the funny side, but it's funny because it's so BAD! soblue

This is a must for this list.

The rules are written with the "Theme" of the game so instead of stating things like: "The players are trying to defeat the evil overlord of an island by winning the favor of the gods from the island worshipers".

The rules state: "The xoens are trying to defeat the soosl by winning the favor of the xosl from the sliz."

When I get home I'll have to post an actual example from the rule book.

For a game that is built around solo play, you reeeeeally need to have a solid rulebook. While there is good content in here, it is mired in various spots and requires a massive amount of page flipping. I know this is a low budget game by nature, but I felt it was pretty brutal to dig into.
