One of those old time favorites. The success of Scrabble has inspired less inspirational game-makers to make something the same but different enough to avoid complaints of Mr.Scrabble himself.

Yet another oldie (from 1954) with a very sketchy description. It looks like a crossword game, yet it is not a requirement that the words played intersect. This is another one that could benefit from some clarification.

Note the Camelot-like cover art. It's unclear what significance, if any, can be drawn from that.

Another early Scrabble variant, from Transogram in 1953. The fact that none of these early attempts "took" is testament to the superior design and clarity of the classic, because at that time, from a business perspective alone, competition in that space probably still looked like a tractable proposition. A similar but better game might well have been able to knock Scrabble out at this point. That game apparently didn't exist, and it didn't happen.

This item, from 1949, a mere year after Scrabble's debut, looks more like the probable ur-Qwink than anything else seen so far. If that is the case, it would make a good case for that style crossword game having its own distinct lineage, developed in parallel with Scrabble and its myriad variants and spin-offs.

Meanwhile, the crossword dice game would appear to be at least as old as the other two main branches. It would not surprise me to find that it predates both the positional crossword strategy game (Scrabble type) and the independent crossword game (Qwink and others). We've seen these strands hybridize in later years, but that they appear to have been distinct at the beginning, is exceedingly interesting.

The boardless crossword game, with this example from Parker Brothers in 1938, is unsurprisingly proven to predate the positional crossword strategy game a la Scrabble. So, Bananagrams and its ilk would apparently derive from an earlier branch of the word game phylogenetic tree.
