I love speed games - mainly because I'm very quick, which makes me good at them. But there's a problem - I find it hard to find opponents to play speed games with, as people just don't enjoy a game where one player is that much faster than the rest - and in some games it just breaks the game for everyone. This is a geeklist discussing which real-time games work and which don't. Have I missed out on any real gems that would be just what I'm looking for?

The problem:
If one person always builds their ship fastest they start every race out in front and in later rounds especially this can be a major advantage. In addition the faster player gets the best choice of tiles, so often also has the best ship as well as being first to finish.

Our solution:
We've changed the rules slightly so that even in later rounds there's only one arrow between each ship at the start of the race, giving the other players a look in at some of the planets as the first player loses days by taking actions. We also never use the timer, as it adds too much pressure to the slower players, who already have the disadvantage of weaker tiles.

Verdict:
Although there are a few players who still refuse to play this game due to the speed element, with our modified rules it does come out regularly and we all enjoy it.

I have the same problem here. I play this FAST, and the people I play with don't do things like that. I might have to try this with a different group of people and see how it goes.

If you two are a lot faster than the others in your group, try the following:

Start the timer when everyone starts. Only when the sand has run through once, you also start grabbing the tiles and building your ship.

I've done this before and it's a decent suggestion.

We usually use the timer only for the last player -- basically, when 3 people have finished, we give the 4th one timer flip to finish up, and that seems to work pretty well.

The other thing we usually do is give some number of Rough Road Ahead cards to experienced players that only affect them and not the newbies/slow players. Last game I played I had 2 Rough cards against me, used harder ships that everyone, and, well, ended up with 0 credits to my name after 3 rounds... but it was still a blast, and everyone else liked that I didn't slaughter them (Obviously, just pick another card if you draw a card that would only work when it effects all players.)

The problem:
If one person always finishes the puzzle first or second they will win, because they have an early choice of the gems every time.

Our solution:
We have stopped playing with the board and instead use the Ubongo Extreme scoring instead, which is mildly better.

Verdict:
Although the fastest player will win, it doesn't actually ruin the game for everyone else, as they still have to try and beat the other players in the game, so the fun and time pressure is still on. It just means they're always playing for second - unless they get lucky and get better gems from the bag.

In this game I find this to be completely untrue. The best gems for a player may not be the first ones available in a row. Sometimes it is best to wait for another player to grab what you need, then grab some. If all the players know this, then lots of standstill can happen right up until the timer runs out. Being first really only lets you move more spaces, not neccesarily get better gems.

This is very easy to fix. I play with my daughter (6), and I slowly counted to 3 before starting my puzzle. This way she had a little advantage.

Now she is getting faster... maybe she has to count now, as I usually lose laugh

There are compensating mechanisms. First, the timer is only started after someone has spotted a route. And, second, if two players both name a route of the same length, then whichever player is losing (fewer success tokens) will get first chance to describe their route.

This seems to work pretty well, actually.

Fast player always take the best power plants first, leaving the junk ones for the slower players.

Our solution:
We have tried giving new player a few seconds thinking time before we all grab, but that didn't work too well either.

Verdict:
A game best played with players of roughly equal skill/experience. Beginners and very slow players just don't have fun.

The good thing about this game is that once you touch a piece you have to play it or lose 5 points. There is always a chance that even the best player will grab a piece and be one space off from it working perfectly. This is one we have not had any problems someone being too fast. This is also less of an impact with more players, since there are more tile choices. This has the most impact in a two player game.

Yes, I agree with that - one of our "fast" players actually takes the longest of all to place his plants after grabbing, because far too often he's messed up and taken a plant he can't actually place easily, however good it looks! But we do find slower players get left with the "three entry" plants more often, which are generally much harder to place.

Like Ubongo, the fact that one player is better doens't actually ruin the game for the other players. However, the game is sufficiently tricky that it should only be pulled out with players who are familiar with, and fairly good at, Ubongo.

Other frequently-used handicaps are to not penalize the slower player for mis-calling a set, or to handicap the scoring. Another is to require the speed demon at the table to count out 3 or 5 seconds after new cards are laid out before he can call a set.

I've found this game (which my SO and I love) can be very frustrating for slower players. As one friend said, "It looks like an IQ test, so losing makes me feel stupid."

My SO and I bought Set Cubed because it looked like it would help with speed demons, being turn based. We find it helped too much.

I never play this game competitively - always as a group effort. When I'm teaching the game, I only point a set out if the new players have been looking for it for a while (or right at the beginning, to illustrate gameplay). Use the spare time to practice finding all sets.

The problem:
I don't think there is one. Although being fast allows one player to find more words, especially 3 and 4 letter ones, a player finding longer words will still score more points.

Our solution:
None needed. Playing without 3 letter words is one way i know players get round it.

Verdict:
Although a speed game, there is enough skill in spotting words that it outweighs the speed element.

Boggle tends to be rather frustrating because the grid is so small. Try Big Boggle -- 5x5 instead of 4x4.

The other thing you can do is not use the timer. Finish a round by mutual agreement. Then it's about your creativity, not your speed at writing.

Our solution:
None.

Verdict:
Although if a fast player is able to race away it can be a problem, as a rule they do get stuck unable to place a letter and the others get a chance to catch up. New players do struggle a bit their first game or two, but on subsequent games are more aware of the speed required, and the large scores happen less.

Our solution:
None, but with experience you learn to spot patterns that indicate when 5 might be likely, which helps.

Verdict:
It's short and silly, so it doesn't really matter. And there's added fun when you bet the fast player 10 pounds that he wouldn't win in the one game all year that he lost (must have jinxed him)!!

Surprisingly, although I'm the master of speed games as a rule, I'm no good at this one - it's another member of our group who always wins!

I had this one. Once you get that knack of spotting the patterns, it's easy to outstrip everyone else.

One time, I had my boss over to play some games (we both played a lot of games, mostly what gets called 'Ameritrash' these days). He got more and more frustrated as I won set after set... then began to display the strangest behaviour - splapping his own face, making 'DUUUR' sounds. Ultimately, he had this bizarre outburst that revealed far more about him (and how he viewed me) than he intended:

"How come you can do this - and not ME?? ME?! and yet YOU can?? YOU of all people??"

Needless to say, he's always admired his own genius. Hubris is a funny thing like that.

I've never played it since. On top of that, it has to be the most annoying packaging ever - the plastic insert has a see-saw effect that throws all the contents out of the shallow interior, onto the floor.

Phew. I'm done now... move along!

Verdict:
Played with two boxes of eggs rather than just one a fast player will often find themselves with more eggs than they can handle and be the first to drop, or have to stop going for more eggs, which lets others catch up. Also, with two boxes of eggs, we have the option of playing with more than 4, for added collision factor.

This is a game of forming a crossword/scrabble type grid from a set of letters.

The problem: New letters are given to all players at the speed of the fastest player(s). This can leave slower players with huge piles of letters and spending (it seems) most of their time taking letters rather than doing anything.

Our Solution: Handicapping. You can apply various different rules on how the faster players can form words: every letter must be in a three letter or longer word; or every word must be 3 letters or longer; only use "ordinary" words (i.e. not those words that you memorized from the scrabble players dictionary only for the purpose of word games), etc.

Verdict: This actually does work out pretty well between players of varying strength. And, in fact, we'll sometimes even play with handicap rules between players of the same strength just because we like the change in how the challenge works.

Actually, I find being "slow" helps somewhat in this game - I frequently will dump letters to get more back to make bigger/better words and the "peels" then often help rather than hinder me.

The game regulates this itself, to some extent. If you have two or three letters to use, it's often easier than just trying to fit one letter in somewhere.

Problem: If one person is considerably faster they will always win.

Solution: instead of dividing the cards equally give the other player less cards.

This allows uneven players to play and still enjoy it. I play it this way with my 5 year old. and played that way it is a fair and fun race.

Two tiles drop from the chutes, and you have to name a word (or the most words) that begin with one letter and end with the other.

I hate to point this out, but it seems what you list as the "problems" are actually the main game mechanics. For instance, in Ricochet Robot the whole point of the game is to find the shortest path fastest.

If these types of games don't work for your group, you should play other types of games. As you have discovered, it's tough to fix the main game mechanic.

I also like these types of games and I know it's tough to pass up games you truly enjoy. Nobody will play Factory Fun with me anymore.

What I'm after are "speed" games, but where there is something in the game for the players who aren't as quick. Ricochet Robot is a good example where there is nothing for coming second, so it becomes unfun to play with a very fast player - Set and Gawp are also particularly bad this way (although I love them!). Ubongo on the other hand works great, because coming second isn't that bad, but there's still a real race to be first. Galaxy Trucker and Factory Fun are similar - it's still a "fun" game for everyone else even if one player is always first - but there the speed element is buried slightly amongst the rest of the game too.

There are other types of games that can give you a sense of speed but doesn't require speed to win. Try negotiation games like Bohnanza. Some party games have timed tasks, but some like Cranium have those interspersed with untimed tasks, so you and your friends get a chance to shine with their different skills at different times.

Negotiation games don't really generate that sense of urgency, or at least not played the way we play.

I do play a lot of party games, and really enjoy them, but I find "gamers" tend to not like them because they're mostly word oriented, but yes, they do have that sense of speed and urgency that I love - Articulate and Time's Up being my two favourites. Games like Ubongo, Factory Fun and Galaxy Trucker however see a lot of play even with "gamers", but have that speed element too, and that's what I'd love to find more of.

No Dutch Blitz.
