Unity Games XV was this past weekend and unfortunately for me, we played more things we didn't care for than things we did. However, two things stood out for us because we didn't even bother to finish them. Nobody was really enjoying themselves.

What have you played that everyone decided was too miserable to continue?

We gathered with five people to play Die Macher. One of us had read the rules and played once before, years ago. We started at 20:00 with a rules explanation. Unfortunately, there was a baby in the house, and one of the players had to take a few breaks to take care of him. At about 21:30, we started the game. The third election came far after midnight. We agreed to quit at that point.

I am leaning two ways with regards to this game. On the one hand, it seems a solid system that can be great tactical fun. On the other hand, if people play it slowly or you get interrupted a couple of times -- man what a bore.

Edit: Changed 9:30 to 21:30. I was mixing up European and American style time labels. Thanks for the snide comments.

O. M. G.

We hated this game. I had read the rules and thought it sounded like a fun, sorta goofy and at least potentially funny game.

Nope.

We quit after 45-60 minutes of serious frustration.

Too much to interpret, too little game.

I'm sure plenty of people will claim that this is a fun game meant to be taken lightly, but I don't care about that argument. Ick.

I played this with 4 or five other serious eurogamers and we all hated it. First time for all of us, and after reading through the rules it sounded like it would be a lot of fun. Then we tried to play it. After a very long time we tried to see what we could do to let someone win so we could move on to another game. (we aren't quitters)

I don't know how this game got ranked so highly on BGG, it doesn't work.
There is no way to get new armies other than going into decline and taking a new nation; so every turn you go into decline and take the next nation on the list. Very boring!

I believe it was the 4th of July and we started playing our first game with this expansion added in. After the first 45 minutes of tediously trying to remember to score and move the stupid fairy, while just waiting and waiting for a volcano to show up, we gave up. And it was traded away in the next math trade that I got involved in without ever seeing the table again.

Someone else beat me to Junta, by far my worst gaming experience. This is the only other game that my group have abandoned halfway through. We are not a picky group but this is perhaps the ultimate in cube pushing with very little tension and some elements such as the market which do not seem to work. Traded away at the first opportunity.

We pulled this out from the Game Library at GenCon in 2007, and all of us agreed to quit after 30 minutes of play. I think the game is probably okay (at best), but the components simply don't work and completely ruin gameplay. On the plus side, at least none of us had purchased it...

My group got together and played it (the first time for all of us). We laughed and chuckled as we read the cards. We attacked each other...

After about 30 minutes of this, the funny cards had been read and all that was left was the game. With everyone killing the leader and the actual game rather simple, it was clear this was going to take too long. We agreed to quit after about an hour into it. Never hit the table again.

As a result my copy (unplayed) remains for trade...

The first time it took six hours, and I figured it was a learning curve thing. There is a TON going on, and plenty to learn.

The second time, four hours in, we realized that team turns were taking fifteen minutes. Fifteen minutes of downtime for half the people at the table during a given round. And the few attempts at playing concurrently, things got all screwed up as players tried to work on the timing on PVP attacks, new mobs spawning etc.

Blegh.

So you don't think I am trolling or trying to antagonize the wood-fondling fanboys, note that the first game I posted was Ameritrash.

For me, Le Havre epitomizes the tedium of eurotrash, without any of the benefits. Move a piece, take some tokens, flip over some tokens, or exchange some tokens. End of round? Pay some tokens so you can go back to moving pieces and taking tokens next turn. Wheeeeee!

About 3/4 of the way through the SHORT game, I turned to my friend Damon and said, "this is the singlemost excruciating gaming experience of my life. I feel like it's an episode of one of those hidden camera reality shows and they are just waiting for me to lose my temper." He agreed.

Had I not been at a con and playing with some very polite and patient strangers, I certainly would have walked away. I will NEVER go near this game again.

Rules are badly written and too often you have to roll 8 on a d6 or lose a character.

I have a friend who says "I don't like most of your games. I like tanks!" and insists on playing this. He especially insists on it when we have a group of 4 or 5. It ends up taking the entire evening (gain a territory, lose the territory, gain the territory...), we don't play anything anyone else wants to play, and we end up quitting far beyond midnight with the two sides about as even as they were in the beginning of the game.

An interesting auction mechanic RUINED by horribly unbalanced & unplaytested special action cards.

One of the few times where I have veered dangerously close to pouting & throwing a fit over a game... and I was playing with people I love playing games with. Thankfully, I wasn't the only one not enjoying myself and we stopped after about 2 hours.

This was a "learning game". The other guy played it about 30 times and it was my first. So, I knew I would lose, no big deal.

However, I've been studying all day long and my head started to hurt a little. The lack of concentration was showing and halfway through the game we decided to quit.
Not a boring game, but the context was transforming it into a bad experience.

I'm on the fence about this game. I only heard great things about it and bought it on a whim (with a bunch of expansions). Played it only once with two people and didn't like it much. But I decided to give it a few more tries.

However, before I could do that, some of my friends convinced me to try a 4-player cooperative match. It started well enough, but halfway through we were simply not having fun anymore.

The downtime seemed a bit excessive and the strategic options started to seem less and less interesting - the novelty of turning the rooms faded away pretty quickly.

I'll play it again with 2, but never again with 4.

We didn't even try to name a winner. We just looked at each other faces and started to put the pieces back on the box.

This is the first game that I remember our group quitting by mutual consent, and it was the only time that I was surprised. I thought it was merely okay and would have finished it, but the other three players were hating on it. I know the owner of the game had really gigantic expectations, and I'm going to guess that had much to do with it.

This is the one and only game that I have ever quit. I should have quit Kingsburg, but this will always be my least favorite game. I was actually looking forward to trying the game. A personal logic problem, that seems right up my alley. But after having the rules read poorly to me, very long times between plays, and being completely bored, I had to quit. Only one play of this game, and that is how it will stay for the rest of my life.

Hey you kids, get off my Avatar!
mbmbmbmbmb
Every group has "that" game, and for us it was Sky Galleons of Mars. The weird thing is that we had played the game once before, and I remember thinking that it was at least okay.

For this - definitely our last play - we ran into two or possibly three problems. First, the game owner had proposed a scenario where the winner would be the one to tow something off the board; the scenario caused some issues and definitely made the game longer. Second, the critical hits charts could basically give a result resulting in no damage, and this seemed to happen all of the time (possibly due to wonky dice rolling); you'd roll great to get the crit, but then nothing would actually happen gulp. The possible third problem was that even though we had played the game before, the owner read the rules multiple times, and every player picked up the rules at some point... I just felt like we were missing something.

The game was already going brutally long and (unknown to us at the time) one of the players started getting a headache. He felt like he was in the position to win and went for it, but we stopped him. No doubt, this was going to lengthen the game a great deal. He quit. That's never happened before or since, and we were pretty stunned.

In hindsight, he was right. No one was enjoying the game, and there was no reason to soldier through it to the brutal end. After that, we came up with a group rule; if someone isn't enjoying something, say so. If at least half the people feel the same way then shut it down and go on to the next thing. Good rule!

This could possibly be the single most dry and boring game I have ever encountered. A friend brought it over one evening, having found it somewhere, can't recall where. We tried it out just to see how bad it would turn out... and take my word for it, it was bad.

The theme is dry and the roll-to-move rules make for a boring game, where the only really interesting decisions you ever have to make is whether you should chance your money test-drilling that new site or if the risk of running bankrupt on any of the very arbitrary random event cards is too high.

I can't even recall whether we actually finished this game.

If this is (as the box proudly states) a very realistic simulation of the "great adventure" of 'modern' oil prospecting and drilling, then I pity my brother, who happens to be in that business!

Five of us had gathered for an epic battle at the insistance of my pirate-loving friend. I was lukewarm on the game to begin with, but he's often played games he was less than interested in, so I indulged him. We each had a fleet of 2-3 ships (800 points?), and one player was controlling a bunch of sea monsters. By my third turn two of my ships were derelict, and we were about an hour and a half into the game.

I didn't actually quit, but I did beg my friend to sink my ships so I could wash my hands of the game.

It takes a long time to play, the high point waterfall (if I remember correctly) island hexes take the theme of a "discovery" of a new island right out of it--"I'm going to discover a new island, and I think that that spot in the middle of the ocean with a high point waterfall tile on it looks like a good place to start looking..."-- and, finally, it turns out that if you can discover a bunch of really small islands (two tiles) and get your scouts on a path that randomly leads to a high point chit, then you'll win going away.
Why discover new lands when you can play around on the hut paths?

Dumb and counter-productive.
