This Geeklist is inspired by a recent Art in Prototypes thread. The basic question (and one that comes up fairly frequently among new designers) was "How much effort should be put into the art for a prototype before it gets submitted to publishers?" There are various answers to that question of course (and I'd encourage you to reply to the original thread with yours) but it prompted an interesting journey through the BGG image gallery.

This Geeklist provides some side-by-side image comparisons of original prototypes and the now-familiar games that they became.

Do you think that would have sold?

I hear they also abandoned: "The game of struggling until you eventually die when your town fills up with bodies and the world fills up with pollution all cause you ran out of wood"

Aintiquity is much better!

Dear Lord, from functional and vibrant to kingdom hell of brown shades. It's harder to distinguish stuff, it kills the mood. Why, oh, why?

I'd never play this game regardless of its design, but I still don't get the supposed attraction of the muted browns. We are geeks, if we were that serious as these brown palettes makes some of us believe to be, we wouldn't be gaming in the first place.

You want medieval get some green, some white, some blue, you know the world looked more nature-like at the time, not really as brown. Or if you want archive look, the middle ages are filled with colourful decorations, ornaments, heraldic, even renaissance, I mean the Italian renaissance, of course, is full of vibrant colours.

Oh, and quilted Antiquity seems better to me as well.

You might call the original edition (under the title Wabash Cannonball) a prototype as it really looks like one.

Some say the new board is not really usable; maybe I'd say the same but having played the game I just can't agree. It looks really nice and still functions very well.

I too find Winsome's original to be more usable. The lush overdetailing in Queen's edition is just distracting. Still, I prefer photocurio's redesign most of all, with hexes color-filled by terrain type. Oh, screw wood choo-choo's AND cubes -- I've switched over to stacking discs for all my cube rails games. Makes things even less cluttered.

I'm surprised you like discs. With some discs under others, it seems visualizing the tracks would be harder, not easier. You'd *have* to look at it from the side -- and of course, if there is a stack in front of another stack, you might not see it.

And add to that the likelihood of them being knocked over.

Yes, but people play sitting at the table, not standing above it. So our default perspective is from the side a bit. And we've never had knock over problems. However, back in the cube days, we routinely had nudge over problems, leaving us wondering whether the B&O was in this farm space or that farm space.

It bears mentioning that I use small discs like seen in Descartes Vinci, not bigger chunkier ones like in Warfrog Age of Steam. Try it out once and see what you think.

I, for one, am greatly thankful for lush, overdone design Queen games made as I could never get the game onto the table in the original format. It's the same reason I have trouble getting Power Grid to table, although it looks, hm, better?, less spartan? than wabash cannonball. (words fail me when trying to compare 2 not so greatly executed designs. Even if you're into minimal design and I like minimal, wabash indeed looks like a prototype not a design. The point is proven by almost all usermade designs here on BGG being more functional (colored hexes) and better looking than the so-called winstone design.)

But I do preffer the Queen games version, as it will get people excited to try it out, before the game reveals it's (not-so-friendly) charms and subtleties. Also I don't have trouble reading the map, illustrative as it is, at least I can tell from a glance what territory is where, maybe there could be a more elegant solution for putting all these numbers on the board, but at least players look at the board instead of the rules. But hey, we're the ones playing with hidden money and free table talk so as J C claims, we are apparently playing a different game (which appears to be CE, not WC .p)

Okay, I don`t have the photos right here, but on its designer`s homepage under "Historie" you can see two prototypes.

The first, "Alpha Centauri" was a Sci-Fi game taking place in the galaxy of the same name, ...

... after this it took place in antique Greece ...

Testing an early prototype at EuroQuest in 2004. The game was still called Trivia Casino at the time. Dan Karp is the one with glasses in the back right. DomCrap (me) is the one with glasses on the top left. We mostly see the back of Satish on the far left.

Metroypolys was originally called Oklahoma? What's the story there?

Do you know how hard it is to get the Y and S to fit in Oklahoma?

Actually I heard Metropoly was first a majority game when it won the Boulogne Billancourt award for prototypes.

Then, it evolved to become the game we know. I hope I don't confuse too many stories here

The first one wasn’t actually a prototype, but rather the first (indie published) version. I would like to add this game anyway to stress the visual improvements brought by Asmodee. Stunning.

A really nice prototype - and you don't see the box.

It's interesting to me how totally the shape of each territory changed, and how much of the peninsula becomes "neutral territory" (out of the game) in the final version. I wonder if the provinces all kept the same boundaries with each other?

Yeah, I found that an odd change too. The final published gameboard has a lot of wasted space.

I still need to pick up a copy of this one someday, though, as it sounds like one I'd really like.

Why this so good list doesn't go on? It's a sin since it's very interesting.. I like to see games I like so much during their "first steps.."

Notice how many of the original / playtest versions of these games feature beer in the pictures - it's amazing the lengths designers must go to get 'willing' playtesters for their games, now matter how good they are ...

I like this idea.

Personally I enjoy seeing the earliest iterations of my favorite games... it goes so far that I kind of feel like owning a copy of the prototype to play with for some reason.
