This morning, you woke up to find your entire game collection had vanished without a trace. Not a single game remains. surprise

After the initial stage of panic fades, so does the thoughts of taking your anger out on kittens. You turn on the news, and discover that any game that was left in open air was evaporated due to the use of biological weapons designed to eliminate entertainment from the world. However, the local news points out that Games Vault, a store just down the road from you, secures 1 copy of each game in an airtight vault in case of such an event.

The store owner has agreed to sell his remaining collection for normal retail value. However, in an effort to make sure every person has the chance to reclaim some of their lost entertainment, he will be limiting purchases to 1 game per person, no exceptions. In addition, he makes it clear that he only has one copy of each game, but through the years has managed to secure a sealed copy of every game known to man. All games will be sold on a first come, first serve basis. You will need to provide identification, and a complete facial scan will be done to ensure that you don't attempt to purchase a second game.

Immediately, your heart starts pounding. People from all over the area will be descending on this store to get their chance at these games. You grab your keys, rush out the door, and speed through town. Every car you see driving in the same direction is a potential competitor. The popular games are sure to go fast. But the store owner said that every game is available, even those that have been out of print for years. Would you be better off getting a popular game, or an out-of-print game? After all, it's quite likely that they are all of the same rarity now.

You pull up to the store as a legion of other board game geeks join you. You rush out of your car, and make a mad dash for the doors. As you arrive at the cash register, the place is crowded. Which one remaining game do you choose?

Following your purchase, the game is unavailable to any other customers. In addition, each customer is assigned a hired security guard to escort them to the parking lot, to ensure their safety.

So, what did you get?

A couple extra rules:

1> Remember, this happened today. For simplicity sake for those that may want to lay a claim later on, just assume that "Today" is the day you are making your selection. So any game that has not yet been released is not eligible to be claimed.

2> If it's been chosen previously, then it's gone.

3> The Media is all over this event. They aren't going to leave you alone until you tell them exactly why you chose the game you chose.

I get Jacoby's Extra large Triple Lanes Board and Minis

Now I have a game that over 20 people can play. All the dice I ever need, and a game that takes so long to finish we won't care about who took what, Wood Blocks = whatever, game.

Neat, I'm late to the party and a great game I enjoy is still available.

I'll take Breakout: Normandy.

What can a poor late-coming somewhat-grognard do ?
Surely, the most popular monsters for a lifetime (ASL, WiF, Up Front...) were gone by now. So I choose this one, much more replayable than it seems. It's like Chess and many Pokers in one !

... and come to regret other nice wargaming monsters that still could be taken by now: DAK (2 or not), any Barbarossa series, Wacht am Rhein, Third Reich, Devil's Cauldron ...
I love other wargames too - Turning Point: Stalingrad, Tigers in the Mist, Fire in the Sky - but VitP has to be first in THIS scenario.

For euros I hope to get invited at other people ;-)

or, I could take another CCG no one else has ventured yet ? (Lord of 5 Rings, Buffy, WoW:TCG)... and trade back for (hand-made copies of) other wargames...

Well, it is not my first choice, but the giant board and large number of possible players (2-6) reeled me in. I just love the slight rpg feel to it while its simplicity allows for many to play. I will not be stopped by the rat trap!

Thanks for keeping this save for me, guys. Awefully nice.
With only one game played, i dunno how long this is gonna keep me happy, but for now i like it.

Besides, I'll be busy coding a board-game trading site. That should be popular right now ...

While not a "boardgame"; it is listed here on the 'Geek. Assuming this would come with the expansions and playsets (enough to actually play, not just have one of each card), this would be my hands down choice. Lots of strategy. Near infinite replayability. Time can be spent building decks. Not to mention the cool theme.

Or, if CCGs are not eligible; this is my choice. Monster game, cool subject (in my opinion). It would take a while to learn the rules. Changing sides would increase replayability.

Almost 2 and a half years have gone by since the Great Entertainment Holocaust of 2009, and I'm still able to snag this game.

I can't find an affordable copy of this on eBay (shipping from Germany kills it), yet in the post-apocalypse world, this game (with the awesome CD voting mechanic) is still available.

MINE!

...then my daughters give me the weepy eyes and my wife scowls at me, so I send them into the store to get the game with the funny penguins.

(Actually, I really like this game a lot, but I had to justify bending the rules of the scenario by sending spouse/kids in to grab another game. I mean, could you look at 4- and 6-year-old girls who are crying and *not* give in to them?)
