This morning, you woke up to find your entire game collection had vanished without a trace. Not a single game remains. surprise

After the initial stage of panic fades, so does the thoughts of taking your anger out on kittens. You turn on the news, and discover that any game that was left in open air was evaporated due to the use of biological weapons designed to eliminate entertainment from the world. However, the local news points out that Games Vault, a store just down the road from you, secures 1 copy of each game in an airtight vault in case of such an event.

The store owner has agreed to sell his remaining collection for normal retail value. However, in an effort to make sure every person has the chance to reclaim some of their lost entertainment, he will be limiting purchases to 1 game per person, no exceptions. In addition, he makes it clear that he only has one copy of each game, but through the years has managed to secure a sealed copy of every game known to man. All games will be sold on a first come, first serve basis. You will need to provide identification, and a complete facial scan will be done to ensure that you don't attempt to purchase a second game.

Immediately, your heart starts pounding. People from all over the area will be descending on this store to get their chance at these games. You grab your keys, rush out the door, and speed through town. Every car you see driving in the same direction is a potential competitor. The popular games are sure to go fast. But the store owner said that every game is available, even those that have been out of print for years. Would you be better off getting a popular game, or an out-of-print game? After all, it's quite likely that they are all of the same rarity now.

You pull up to the store as a legion of other board game geeks join you. You rush out of your car, and make a mad dash for the doors. As you arrive at the cash register, the place is crowded. Which one remaining game do you choose?

Following your purchase, the game is unavailable to any other customers. In addition, each customer is assigned a hired security guard to escort them to the parking lot, to ensure their safety.

So, what did you get?

A couple extra rules:

1> Remember, this happened today. For simplicity sake for those that may want to lay a claim later on, just assume that "Today" is the day you are making your selection. So any game that has not yet been released is not eligible to be claimed.

2> If it's been chosen previously, then it's gone.

3> The Media is all over this event. They aren't going to leave you alone until you tell them exactly why you chose the game you chose.

Well, if I can only have 1 game for the rest of my life time, I might as well get the game that takes a lifetime to play!

"Playing Time 60000 minutes" (and I've heard that is an understatement from someone who actually finished a full game!)

-K

P.S. Wendell, we can alternate between WiF and this and I'm sure we'd die before we finished more than a dozen games.... *g*

Well, this aspect of the scenario is pretty realistic; I'm sure I would fail to get up early even if the end of the world was at hand. With many of my favorites long gone, I think this will be an excellent strategic choice. Illinois (see item #61) isn't THAT far away, and in the dead of winter Brad would probably enjoy bringing the last Roborally set on earth to North Carolina for a nice vacation, and getting to play with the expansion stuff.

Meanwhile, I'll have some good boards, and we can replace the cards with 14-sided dice and improvise our own robots out of marzipan or something. :-)

Figured I'll take the Deluxe Edition despite the fact we never really use the extra stuff -- If this is the only game I'm getting, it might be nice to have a little variety.

I do not like this game. I've rated it a 5. But it comes with TWO full decks of playing cards and chips. I can play 99, spades, hearts, rummy, cribbage, 4-suited lost cities, Tichu (almost), No Thanks, Euchre, Whist, Bridge (if I ever learn) and on and on.

Not to mention, if I can still find Yehuda's blog , I can play Power Grid, Carcassonne, Acquire, Ra, and a bunch of other games from his Wielding the Decks series.

So, I'm taking a game I can barely stand to play. It's cheating, but in this situation, I'd cheat.

I thought I had Runebound, but I see now that it was already taken earlier in the list. And thanks for the invite, I'll be over to play!

So I'll take Goldbrau. It is a game about selling beer at Ocktoberfest. Its been getting consistent plays every week so far this year at our Meetup, which happens to be at a brewpub. Lots of requests to play.

I've turned on 15+ people to it now & more copies have been acquired. If it turned out I'm the only one to have it, I'm sure to get invited to a lot of beer related events

It really is an underappreciated gem of that played by the correct rules, is quite awesome.

It sure pays to be a Grognard! Virtually none of my top 10 games have been claimed yet. (Works same way on e-bay, super high quality games available for peanuts and shipping....)

I'll have to hire a couple of winos to buy West Front and East Front for me, but that's what winos are for right?

Then I'll have an almost infinte number of scenarios and the whole war to play.

(and with enough winos I'll swoop in and grap Flat Top, CV, the PG series, the SWWAS series, Napoleon, Rommel in the Desert... are you kidding me, people grabbed Killer Bunnies and Risk ahead of these?)
