BGG Sub-Cultures
-
BGG has become big and over time several sub-cultures have developed. Here are some of the most interesting, known of them. One of the features of the BGG subcultures are the group of regulars, that are known to the people participating, but often are less well known in the rest of BGG.
Please add any you know of/are participating in.

The Microbadge designers
This is the thread where it is all happening. You submit a design and shortly after it gets uploaded. Or you request a design and one of the regulars will propose something a few minutes later. The 'regulars' there are constantly coming up with great new ideas and Joe Grundy implements them in no time with his magic software tools. This subgroup is always welcoming new faces, although it is sometimes hard to start designing as there are soooooo many designs already.
If you have an idea, it is good to check first in this list whether your idea has been implemented already.

Religion, Sex, Politics
Yeah, there are heated debates on the Games forum, but nothing says 'flame bait' and 'ruffled feathers' quite like the RSP forum. The crowd there enjoys heavy, controversial discussions, this is no place for sensitive people. Just don't get too optimistic that people will take your viewpoint, there's not much leeway in RSP .

The Thrifters
A lot of people like thrifting, searching for that heavily underprized gem or an old game, which has some kind of appeal. Not only is there a regular exchange of thrift enthusiasts (they have their own guild as well), but they also crown their king every year, based on the purchases made. For details check the Geeklist.

The Chit Chatters
The place to go for crazy pictures, sarcasm, thumbs and the origin of many BGG inside jokes.

Geek Questions
I once stumbled upon this feature and gave it a shot. It's amusing for sure, you can sharpen your wits, get the strangest questions and hilarious answers. I know some people are addicted to this, just check out the statistics feature for this.

No love for the Geekmodders?! Well actually, there is rarely love for the Geekmodders. They are a secret society dedicated to maintaining BGG purity and hoarding Geekgold like Smaug's rich uncle. But that is only if you believe the constant thread assaults by wronged photographers aspiring to BGG greatness.

The Geekchatters
I almost forgot about this subgroup. Day and night you are able to talk to people all over the world. I hear Grognads is a regular of this group, for example.
If you want to be a part of this, go check it out here.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned the subculture of people who make geeklists yet.

The online players
There are many of us playing dozens of this tiny gem simultaneously every day at the www.boardgamegeek.com/tigris part of BGG. I know a few BGGers who have joined BGG only for this reason.

The Lurkers
Nearly Everyone starts as a lurker. Reading the content, navigating the game pages. Some go by the wayside, but hopefully they all find a voice here on the geek.
No one should feel like they have to fit into any of the sub-cultures to start posting and thumbing. Hopefully they all make it past the lurker stage!

Customized game pieces
For lack of a better term: people who customize their games, i.e. paint their miniatures, upgrade the playing pieces, produce 3-D game boards. A sub-culture mostly limited to those with some artistic skills, at least if you want to brag about it here.
Interested to know more? -> A guild for all users who enjoy customizing their games.

I tried to join them once, but found that I really don't have the time to devote to it. Probably one of the smaller sub-cultures, but a creative way to play a game, using nothing but the BGG itself!

The Admins are the police, the fire brigade, the government and the central bank of this site:
- enforcing the laws and dispersing rowdy crowds - fighting the fires - improving the infrastructure - minting much new to keep the economy flowing

The PnP fanatics, who spend 100's of real money (no
) on buying supplies to print-and-assemble all kind of "Free" games or "Free" versions of games.
I must admit I did "IT" twice all ready, but some out there are real fanatics!

Some BGG'ers live by making statistical analysis of about any data they can find around here.
You have to admit, though, that some of these analysis are quiet interesting!

No, we are not talking Milton Bradly here. This is about He Who IS Not To Be Named. Much more than the figurehead leader of Ameritrash in the Ameritrash vs. Euro debate, Mr. ____ (& Noble) expulsion from BGG lead a volitile disruption in the Geek.

The Wargamers
Perhaps it's the simple fact that I'm a member of this subculture, but it seems to be growing in prominence here on BGG.
Notable for being the only subculture that is deliberately "suppressed" and "compartmentalized" by BGG's ratings system - ie wargame ratings are "rounded down" and separated from other games in menus etc.
Kudos for this subculture scoring the 2008 Golden Geek for best two player game ... a 12 year old re-release, sure Euros are innovative too.
Once scorned by other Geeks for our use of preorder systems to support game development and production ... such systems are now common in Euros as well.
Alternate subculture name: Grognards Alternate web venues: Consimworld, web grognards Sub-Sub-cultures of Wargamers include: - ASLers - CDG fan boys - GMT fan boys - MMP fan boys - OCS fan boys - block wargamers - counter clippers
Raging debates include: - Is Twilight Struggle a wargame? - Is Memoir 44 a wargame? - Are ASL/CDGs/block wargames? - How messed up are counter clippers?

The Podcasters
I'm a big fan of all the wonderful folks from the BGG community who host podcasts about...Boardgames! Most of these guys have guild pages on the geek. For a while, I even posted a monthly report tracking the games discussed on several of the podcasts. While I no longer have the time to compile that report, I certainly continue to enjoy the quality programs these guys provide for the boardgaming community.
