BGG has become big and over time several sub-cultures have developed. Here are some of the most interesting, known of them. One of the features of the BGG subcultures are the group of regulars, that are known to the people participating, but often are less well known in the rest of BGG.

Please add any you know of/are participating in.

The Microbadge designers

This is the thread where it is all happening. You submit a design and shortly after it gets uploaded. Or you request a design and one of the regulars will propose something a few minutes later. The 'regulars' there are constantly coming up with great new ideas and Joe Grundy implements them in no time with his magic software tools. This subgroup is always welcoming new faces, although it is sometimes hard to start designing as there are soooooo many designs already.

If you have an idea, it is good to check first in this list whether your idea has been implemented already.

How about the origination FOR 'microbadge' inspiration DENIERS here? yeah, I'm talking about MINE shown here in the "Überbadge" there, that I've HAD prior to the 2004 USA 'elections'. These ungrateful bastards can't ADMIT nor DENY about that aspect, so they remain as silent as the "wormfarts" they WERE composed from! and they OWE 'moi' big-time for that also...

I've been on this site for 8 years now, and I'm far from sick of games, but I think I am, to some degree, sick of learning too many new games. I'm also tired of playing 4+ hr multiplayer games, but I'll still happily play really long games 2 player.

I have known Grognads since the late 90's when he and I were both somewhat regular contributors on Don Rae's A&A forums. If you think that has given me greater insight into interpreting his posts, you'd be wrong. The above paragraph is a great example of where I haven't got a clue what he is saying. Asking him to rephrase in the interest of clarity might be polite, but experience has proven the futility of that gesture.

So I decided to run his post above through a few translations. First into Hindi (since Nepalese, the language of his adopted land wasn't available), then into German (common language of boardgames), then since it still looked Greek to me - into Greek, and finally back to English.

I'll leave it to you to judge whether this effort was helpful ...

Like "minor label" deniers inspiration here? Yes, I mean my own in the "About Badge" is that I am in the U.S. since 2004 "elections". The idiots do not even ungrateful denial about this aspect, which have since come from "wormfarts", as can be! And we have "about me" is great ...

Yeah, there are heated debates on the Games forum, but nothing says 'flame bait' and 'ruffled feathers' quite like the RSP forum. The crowd there enjoys heavy, controversial discussions, this is no place for sensitive people. Just don't get too optimistic that people will take your viewpoint, there's not much leeway in RSP .

That's true, but in RSP you don't get closed down/locked as easily, thus never-ending arguments (the whole "someone is wrong on the internet, honey" thing) are more likely.

Only once have I felt attacked from my postings on RSP. I took a bold stance (backed by social surveys and psychiatric reports) that no one wanted to confront and it became an issue. Later when I was posting on F:AT and people snubbed me from what I had posted here.

Other than that one instance, people actually want to have real conversations, and I usually learn quite a bit.

The Thrifters

A lot of people like thrifting, searching for that heavily underprized gem or an old game, which has some kind of appeal. Not only is there a regular exchange of thrift enthusiasts (they have their own guild as well), but they also crown their king every year, based on the purchases made. For details check the Geeklist.

Amazingly, that question gets asked a lot IN GeekQuestions. It has been possible for quite some time to delete your own questions, and there were a spate of questions deleted by admins early on in the game, and perhaps more every now and again that get sniped by them quietly. In any case, Clark's answers to deleted questions count toward his running total.

No love for the Geekmodders?! Well actually, there is rarely love for the Geekmodders. They are a secret society dedicated to maintaining BGG purity and hoarding Geekgold like Smaug's rich uncle. But that is only if you believe the constant thread assaults by wronged photographers aspiring to BGG greatness.

I publicly "confess" to NOT ever having any semblance of dissatisfaction with HER adjudications on anything. It's the plentiful, ignorant "others" for WHOM I direct condemnations upon, when they blithely and insipidly admit: "Never HEARD of such before!" oh yeah? Well you JUST 'did' when I presented whatever on THAT!

I almost forgot about this subgroup. Day and night you are able to talk to people all over the world. I hear Grognads is a regular of this group, for example.

There are a couple things to be aware of before your first chat, however. First off, just because you see people in the room do not be surprised if no one responds to what you say right away - like so many chatrooms a lot of the people are idle and you can't really rely on the idle indicators at the side of the screen. Second, don't feed the UK schoolgirls - of an afternoon you can sometimes find these bored chavettes online looking for some amusment; don't encourage them.

The Lurkers
Nearly Everyone starts as a lurker. Reading the content, navigating the game pages. Some go by the wayside, but hopefully they all find a voice here on the geek.

No one should feel like they have to fit into any of the sub-cultures to start posting and thumbing. Hopefully they all make it past the lurker stage!

I was a lurker at first because sometimes it's a scary place to be. I was afraid of saying the wrong thing being newish at the time to boardgames. I had heard all the stories about the really intense people who would jump down your throat if you played wrong at games and kind of thought those people would be here and would jump at me if I said the wrong thing. I was a lurker until I saw that most people aren't like that here and since I've been posting things I have really enjoyed the BGG community. I am happy that my fears were unfounded!

For lack of a better term: people who customize their games, i.e. paint their miniatures, upgrade the playing pieces, produce 3-D game boards. A sub-culture mostly limited to those with some artistic skills, at least if you want to brag about it here.

Interested to know more? -> A guild for all users who enjoy customizing their games.

Great, I was going to add the PnP community, but I've been too busy playing Cheese Chasers this month...a PnP game.

Some BGG'ers live by making statistical analysis of about any data they can find around here.

You have to admit, though, that some of these analysis are quiet interesting!

I love these guys. I'm not always getting what message they want to convey with some of the graphs, but some results are really interesting and telling. And BGG is very, very rich in data in statistics, when you know where to look for it.

Here's a list of BGG Statistics lovers. You'll be able to identify them with the help of this microbadge:

No, we are not talking Milton Bradly here. This is about He Who IS Not To Be Named. Much more than the figurehead leader of Ameritrash in the Ameritrash vs. Euro debate, Mr. ____ (& Noble) expulsion from BGG lead a volitile disruption in the Geek.

Sides were formed, battles fought. The war is over, but the factions remain....

The Wargamers

Perhaps it's the simple fact that I'm a member of this subculture, but it seems to be growing in prominence here on BGG.

Notable for being the only subculture that is deliberately "suppressed" and "compartmentalized" by BGG's ratings system - ie wargame ratings are "rounded down" and separated from other games in menus etc.

Kudos for this subculture scoring the 2008 Golden Geek for best two player game ... a 12 year old re-release, sure Euros are innovative too.

Once scorned by other Geeks for our use of preorder systems to support game development and production ... such systems are now common in Euros as well.

Alternate subculture name: Grognards
Alternate web venues: Consimworld, web grognards
Sub-Sub-cultures of Wargamers include:
- ASLers
- CDG fan boys
- GMT fan boys
- MMP fan boys
- OCS fan boys
- block wargamers
- counter clippers

Raging debates include:
- Is Twilight Struggle a wargame?
- Is Memoir 44 a wargame?
- Are ASL/CDGs/block wargames?
- How messed up are counter clippers?

The Podcasters

I'm a big fan of all the wonderful folks from the BGG community who host podcasts about...Boardgames! Most of these guys have guild pages on the geek. For a while, I even posted a monthly report tracking the games discussed on several of the podcasts. While I no longer have the time to compile that report, I certainly continue to enjoy the quality programs these guys provide for the boardgaming community.

Excellent! It includes video- and audio-podcasts lovers & producers, I guess.

Here's the confession of boardgame podcast addict (a.k.a. Blott), when you want to get a first glance at the podcast world.

Is there a place where 'podcast people' meet here to discuss the various episodes? It seems most of them have a guild, where episodes can be discussed. Here's the podcast guild overview.
