Tonight we decided to break out something really old, just for fun. Which led me to think...

What is the oldest game edition you own? Not necessarily the oldest one based on publication date, but the oldest specific edition you own?

For me the oldest edition I own is Clue. It's the 1972 version that remained in our family my whole life - it's as old as me! Many years and many plays, but I still have all the original weapons, player pawns and cards. I actually refuse to buy a newer edition because I love the photographs in this version - Ms. Scarlet as a dragon lady, Ms. Peacock as the old fuddy-duddy...it rocks.

I picked up this at the thrift store today. We got it to sell/trade, so it's the oldest game we own, but the oldest edition of a game I actually play (not counting chess and Chinese Checkers) is probably Pass the Pigs, Boggle, Yahtzee, Mille Borne, or Skip-Bo. The one I can date for sure, without going to the game cabinet, is 13 Dead End Drive, at 1993. I miss my older copies of Othello and Upwords.

I've got the original 1964 edition of it, which has been in the family longer than I've been alive! It got me into the stock market for real when I was a teen in 1991!

I think my dad has a copy of The Game of Authors from the 1940s or 1950s somewhere around here, though...

1935 Copyright square box and separate board, 'Rules for 1937' inside the box. My copy has these same houses and hotels. But it has 7 player pieces, all different colors and shapes, yet obviously a set. I got it 20ish years ago at a swap meet for $5.

Then I have a handful of 3M games and a few Parker Brothers card games from the '60s.

"The beautiful game" incarnate.

I own the, apparently rare, Dutch version from 1950. The picture on the left is from my actual copy.
I bought it online from a Dutch seller. She had no pictures of it but said it was old so I decided to have a go since she offered it cheap. The only drawback is that it misses any original rules, but possibly these were a separate purchase at the time. I need to investigate this further.

I still have my original Strat-o-Matic set from 1973. It came with the four playoff teams from 1972 (The Reds, the Pirates, the Tigers and the As). It also included the Red Sox who finished half a game behind the division winning Tigers. 1972 was a strike year and the Red Sox played (and won) one fewer game.

The oldest game (by age of the item, not the age of the design) is one of my Mah Jongg sets. It's similar to the one pictured, but the wooden case is a bit more ornate. It was my great-grandmother's set, and dates from the Mah Jongg boom of the 1920s.

My mom remembers playing with it as a child - not playing the game, but using the tiles as building blocks. Many years later, she would start playing the game using a completely different set of rules than the ones my great-grandmother used and taught me to play and appreciate the game. When I was a teenager, I found it in a corner of my grandparent's home and was very excited to see it. It was the only thing that I really wanted to inherit from them and it now holds a place of honor in my game room.

I may not play Mah Jongg that often these days, but it is still a prized part of my game collection. Thinking of it reminds me that it is about time to dust off the Mah Jongg books and chips, pull the set out and play a few games of it again.

The oldest boardgame or actual board, for that matter, I own and still use is the Club Cribbage Master board by Drueke. Passed down to me from my parents, they recieved it when I 8 or 9 years old for a x-mas gift from card playing friends of thiers. This board has instilled in me a deep appreciation for all things Drueke (chess boards, game board sets, etc). I *LOVE* these boards and they last forever. Mine looks just as good today as the day they recieved it.
