Geekbuddy question #? :Grails and buylist Guantanamo Bay
I suck at Bingo .... but I don't mind

Name at least 5 grails for you.(they have to be out of print)
And name five other games you will probably get.
Well I'm afraid I'll ask anyone a question again about a game. After ten months I think I have seen 500+ unique ones pass. And I lost track.... Some of the games that got my attention was because of someone mentioned it not because it was played but because it was a grail to them.

My grails
Edit 1 Wow a lot has changed in one year. Wit the game ID showing I have to guess the game I'm changing my comments on.
Battle Cry game length is perfect. Number of players is good for playing with my uncle too And it is different enough (have ancients). Well I have played ancients and got battlelore and played that. I liked both games but I find a game of Caylus or agricola more rewarding. I'm hoping the lore will change things in battlelore. I could have bought a used copy in excellent shape for 25 euro but didn't do it. I also read about a nice reprint. Not sure I will get it though.
Age of Steam : well not sure I'm going to hunt for it due to the latest releases. Think that I should at least have played it and an 18XX game too. I have to make up my mind. Got the third edition and steam as well. After playing RRT I'm sure this will go down well. I should make it a higher priority to get to the table.
Goa : Surprisingly this is in the list. I almost bought this game in my first online order. Doesn't look like a reprint will be coming soon.Got the 999 version. This one I need to move up on my playlist as well.
Dune should ask the eindhoven gamers to play it first.I hope someone has a copy. Have read some great stuff about this game. Well reprint I'm not too sure about My guess is that this is about Dune . Well not so eager to get anymore. I've thought numerous times of getting a french edition (with the added expansion) In all honesty I don't think it will be a hit in Mol. Still want to play it someday.
Antiquity Well after the success of Indonesia this is perhaps the second splotter game that will get a decent amount of plays. So when ordering Indonesia I found this game to be out of stock. Hopefully they will reprint it soon. But for now it is on the OOP games list. Second game wasn't as good as the first game. I hope Jae reads this before buying an expensive copy. It shouldn't be too hard to get rid off anyway. Antiquity well I've played Bus really liked that. I've gotten myself roads and boats. I still have to play that. BNut it isn't very high on my playlist right now. I think that if they reprint it I will get in a play soon. I own greed inc. but it's not on my playlist at all. As Is Cannes or Oraclos.
Princes of the Renaissance near the bottom of the list. Not too sure I'll need this. But it is an highly ranked economic game. How could I not want it. Merchant of Venus another economic game. My only concern is that I won't be playing too many 3 hour + games.
Ah the older economic games. The few I've played I really enjoyed. Long short was the latest that was a big hit.
Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit I will be looking to get that too. But my copy has to be on this side of the ocean. Gameplay looks different enough from anything that I own or have played. Well same goes for all of my grails of yesteryear. I wait for the reprint that will never be. I thought the same of 1830 but the reprint is coming soon.
Another game I am not too sure about or perhaps I'll grab the reprint isTales of the Arabian Nights,
COLOR=#0000FF] Not sure this will get played in Mol...
Games I'll probably buy
Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear! Russia 1941-1942 :This game gets so much positive comments. Playing time is a bonus. I am abit concerned I might miss out on a great game if I don't get it soon enough.
COLOR=#0000FF] Not sure that will get played in Mol...
Container. Well I have be looking to get a deal on this one. If I can't I'll probably get it at Essen or straight after it. Got it, played it, loved it.
Glory to Rome, Jet Set, Archaeology: The Card Game are games hard to get over here. Battleball is another
GtR got it before the latest reprint. That will teach me. Played Mike's copy and really liked it. Gameplay can be a bit much for my group in Mol. I might underestimate them however.... Jet-set has been very close to hitting the table on a couple of occasions. Steve Kearon got hold of the expansion for me as well. Really need to give it a try. Archeology got buried under the huge number of releases. This is the only one I haven't got from the final 4 as I own a copy of battleball too. I really should try Battleball with my uncle.
Mahjong Well first I'm going to play Mhing or someone elses copy and if I like it I will start looking for a nice bakelite version. Tried to play Mhing but german rules were kind of confusing. still will get it someday.
Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age can be a hit. But it wasn't. much too short

I've actually gotten most of my grails already.
And due to some anonymous generosity, I seem to only be able to come up with four grails...
Crude: The Oil Game - I've already played it and know I like it. It's just a matter of acquiring a copy now.
Warhammer Quest - I enjoy dungeon crawls and this one intrigues me the most. I regret not buying the complete expansioned copy I was offered for $100 6 years ago
War of the Daleks - what can I say, I REALLY like Doctor Who
and the next two really aren't grails, but they are going to be VERY hard to get
Sumo! - I'm a sucker for Japanese theme
Die Verbotene Stadt - see previous, also I really like the mechanics in this one.
Games that will likely be in my next order:
Indonesia - I'll probably never play it, but when I do, I have it in good knowledge that I will like it. Either that or Kris dies
Diamonds Club - I hated Goa, but I think the theme on this one will redeem it for me.
Shadows over Camelot - I really liked the game, I would like to play it more. And paint it.
Small World - BAAAAAAA!
Jamaica - I don't have enough piratey games.

Steve Kearon
United Kingdom Cardiff Feeling great. How about you?
Well I don't know why I love you like I do. Nobody in the world can get along with you.
There's just one last favor I'll ask for you. See that my grave is kept clean.
-
I'm probably over my 'grail' period now. For a while I tracked games down and vacuumed them up. I've got many of the games Kris & JEA list as grails or wanted.
There are a few OOP games I'd buy if I saw them:
Spekulation is an old Dirk Henn economic game that I've never played, originally released in small quantities by his own publishing company, but never subsequently re-published by Queen. I bumped into Dirk at the Queen stand at Essen last year, and asked him about the chances of a reprint, and he thought it unlikely Queen would do it because the game is perceived as too Anglo/American. There was a slight possibility of a small print run though.
Cartel is another old economic game. I did manage to play this last month, and should get another play this month. There were reports early last year than Winning Moves were about to do a reprint, but they changed their minds.
Falsche FuFFziger is another old economic game. I almost played it last year. Maybe in July.
...und tschüss! is light Martin Wallace cardgame. On my wishlist for a while, played in March, and it stays on my wishlist.
Foppen is another cardgame. I could have bought it last July, but waited until playing it at a convention with Grimwold. I enjoyed the game, returned home, but then found the shop that had copies had sold out over the weekend. Maybe some day...
Five games I'll probably buy soon. I'm going to cheat a little here. The first four games are on their way from a French games store.
Trader is a 2-4 player reworking of an old 2 payer game (Ka-Ching!) that's just been released in France.
You Robot is a silly sounding game for 2-5 pairs of players - one player trying to get his partner to adopt a certain pose without giving details of what's required.
Finito! sounds like an interesting little bingo-based filler.
Valdora is one of the new Michael Schacht releases.
Sumeria is one I've played in prototype form, and should be released for the UK Games Expo in early June.

Just 5?
Ok, if it's just 5, I guess I'd go with: Mouse Chaos because just seeing a pic of it sent me into my 'bits' whore' phase, yet I still haven't gotten this one.
Warhammer Quest which in my opinion is still THE BEST dungeon crawl game out there. But, there is no way I'm paying the money it costs to buy it and it's expansions.
Civilization is one of those games that only is it way more expensive then I would be willing to pay, it suffers from even if I had the extra cash to drop on it, I'd probably drop that cash on something else knowing that it would never hit the table. But, I enjoyed the couple games I played of it in the 80's and would like to have it.
Cyberpunk Episode I: The Battle For Cyber-dump, I'm not even sure this really exists. I saw this and knew I NEEDED it. But, no one admits to owning it. When I first saw it, I tracked down the website of the company. But, it was in Russian. I think it was available, but I didn't buy it because I wasn't sure what it all said AND I wasn't going to send money to some company in Russia I knew nothing about.
Burp hardly belongs on the list. It's not hugely expensive and it's not that RARE. But, it is rare enough that when I have the money to spend on it I can't seem to find it.
New misses: Crude: The Oil Game, Dark Future, Die Magier, Merchant of Venus, Master Thieves: Expansion Cards, and Night of the Ill-Tempered Squirrel
What will I buy?
Probably: Age of Conan: The Strategy Board Game well I have plenty in this genre and I'm not hyped about it, but you all know the story.
Duck Dealer, yeah Splotter, bits, too expensive
All Things Zombie: The Boardgame something makes me want to buy this. Oh this one isn't out yet, so I guess I should have answered this one for anticipated 2009 release.
Chinatown I do want to buy this, just haven't gotten around to it.
Taj Mahal because Steve says so.

1024x768 works just fine - Don't Wide the Site!
The Back Alley gets no respect.

My grail items are a bit out of the norm.

Dibs - has been on my RADAR since it came out and was featured in the GAMES Magazine 100 games edition. It appears to be a great little party game the no one really wants to part with if it's in any decent shape. As it was a one-off attempt from a non-game designer/manufacturer, I suppose that he just went back to his day job and never looked back. Shame no mass market company picked it up.
Argue - now this looks great and appears to already be sold out at the few places that might carry it. I see that one has sold on eBay for next to nothing. I must be more diligent.
Straightaway - this is just the competist in me wanting to acquire stuff I truly don't need. Rhyme Time - ditto. I really need to avoid getting roped into desiring stuff like this.
Modern Society - I list this as a "grail" game because it was mentioned ina geek list after Essen a couple of years ago, raving about what a great game it is. I thought it sounded good, too, only to discover that it was all hype of a prototype. I don't know that it will ever see the light of day as a reasonable boardgame.
Category Game - another party game that looks like A to Z with a communal board.
As to games that I actually could purchase, though I likely won't... Gemlok Schildkrötenrennen Hit or Miss

Well, I don't believe that I have any grail games right now. There are a few that I would like but are limited based on price more than availability.
Crokinole - This has always looked interesting to me. I've never played it, but I think the dexterity game would be a hit with friends. It's probably on the same level as PitchCar.
Nacht der Magier - Another pricing issue. Whenever I see a copy for sale, it ends up more than I really want to pay. The novelty of playing a game in the dark intrigues me.
Arkham Horror - This game taunts me whenever I come across it in a store or online. I was briefly in an auction for it a few weeks back, but it went up to more than I wanted to pay. Some day!
Glory to Rome - I played this for the first time a few weeks ago and loved it! I went to look for it online and found that it would be OOP for awhile. Price isn't much of an issue for Glory.
Now for the games I will probably get in the near future. I already have a few things that I'll be getting soon.
Dominion: Intrigue - The lunch group has been enjoying the base game for the past week. It will be fun to add a few more players into the mix.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Game (US) - I was always a big Buffy fan when it was on TV. This is supposed to be one of the better series to game translations. I just won this in an auction for around $30. The seller hasn't contacted me yet.
Dice Town - I'm still on my dice kick. Last week I talked to Dave Jones from Time Well Spent about it and said that it was a good time. Similar to Liar's Dice. Plus I'm a sucker for Western themes.
I really need to focus on playing many of the games I already have, so I shouldn't be buying any more. Damn you BGG!!!!!

Sadly, I don't really want any games that are OOP. I've got most of those I'm interested in. However, here are 5 that I'd like to grab that are hard to find:
J'te Gage Que... - Just plain silly fun.
PitchCar This and Cronk are just so expensive.
Los Banditos - Doesn't actually sound that great, but still.
Keltis: Der Weg der Steine - If the dang thing ever gets over here.
And now 5 I *will* buy:
Arctic Scavengers - I helped the designer with rules writing and card layout, so I felt obligated to give him my money.
Race for the Galaxy: Rebel vs Imperium - Like, duh.
Space Alert - Very likely to pick up when it comes out by RGG.
Steam - Annoyed with RRT at the moment. Hope you can play original AoS with the steam components.
American Rails - Help out the little guy.
Ones I will likely buy:
Endeavor - Exploratative euro goodness. I will at LEAST play it and probably own it.
Tales of the Arabian Nights - Have to at LEAST try the new version.

Seriously, I have no grails. Never did.
As for what I might buy, well I am getting a lot of mileage out of M44 with the eldest and I don't have the Mediterranean Theatre yet, so probably that (though not for a while, we still have most of the Terrain Pack and Eastern Front to go, not to mention the Pacific Theatre and Air Pack).
Beyond that, no plans.

It's fun, it's healthy, it's good exercise. The kids will just love it. And we put a little sand inside to make the experience more pleasant.
You know, they say there was a man who jumped from the forty-FIFTH floor? But that's another story...

Well my one grail was Roads & Boats... but now I have it!

I'd still like to find Antiquity.
Other than that I need to find & cetera... heck I'm a completest.
