NOTE: The list is not sorted. Initial entries are in alphabetical order 'cause that's how I entered them. At the end, however, you'll see the newest games added to BSW. Use the index (above) to navigate to the game you want, or look on the last page to see what's new at BSW!

Playing board games face-to-face is much better than playing the same game online (most of the time): you get to handle the cool bits, you get to smack talk your buddies, and you can take a food/beer break whenever you feel like it. But if you just can't get together as often as you would like, having an online version available is a good thing. Many games are available at BSW. Some are very well done -- others, not so much. I originally had 2 lists, one for the well-done interfaces and another for the not-so-good. I've since consolidated the lists, and also expanded it to list every game available. As I play them, I'll try to add some information about each game's interface and also put in some BSW pictures instead of the default ones.

If you are scratching your head wondering what the heck I am talking about (which may well be possible, given all the new faces around here), read on!

BSW Newbies
What IS BSW?
BSW = Brettspielwelt, the world of boardgames. It is a free German site where you can play a variety of "euro" games against people from all over the world. There are some single-player games available, too. The most common complaint against BSW is that it is hard to simply find an opponent and play a game ... you have to deal with the whole Metagame thing (below). If you can get past this (and once you know how, it is actually very easy finding games) you will have a great opportunity to play against some very good players. Also, some complain about how some people at BSW whine about poor play, kingmaking etc. Well, as in any large group of people you are bound to find some a$$holes. But most people are there to play, and most are very willing to help you out. So, by all means go, play! There are a variety of links at the bottom, which should give you more than enough help.

The Metagame
BSW is a virtual world: there are cities (city-states, really) which have mayors, ambassadors, etc.; there are guilds which have whatever it is guilds have; there are taxes (unless you are a citizen of certain cities); there may even be death (I think you can be banned?). You earn money (talers) by playing games or winning lotteries. You can spend money to buy houses, do landscaping ... even start your own city. All of this is completely irrelevant if you just want to play games, but knowing something about it is helpful in getting around and in finding those games. One nice thing is that you don't have to do anything to participate - just play. As you play more, your rank goes up. With increasing rank, you get access to a few more commands. Check some of the links below for more information.

Some Useful Links

1. The Client
Download and install the client! Do it now! The application updates itself as needed, and helps you get to and play the games very easily. You can customize the appearance by configuring the .prop file (see #2). It is a much nicer way to play games at BSW, compared to the through-the-web (java) application.

2. The .prop File
This is the file (.prop is the file extension) that configures your client -- you'll find it in your Brettspielwelt folder. Freshly installed, it has only a few useful commands. You will definitely want to customize it.
a. My .prop
I keep an updated copy of my .prop (do a find/replace and put your own id/password there) on BGG! You have 2 options: either open your Brettspielwelt.prop file in a text editor and copy/paste the info found at the link above, or replace your .prop with the latest version I've uploaded to BGG (this one, however, is not updated as regularly); you'll find it under Miscellaneous Game Accessory, here.

b. ET Generator
This will generate a .prop file with many commands configured with control-key combinations. You will also have a bunch of drop-down menus allowing you to jump immediately to game rooms, issue commands etc., without having to remember any actual commands yourself. It's all in English, of course, and designed by/for EnglishTown! Unfortunately, it looks as if this site isn't kept up to date.

3. Brettspielwelt
The place to go for good games! If you don't speak German, be sure to select one of the flags on the left side of the page before following any other links - much of the site will then be in the appropriate language. You can play games by following the "Games" link - it's a java application. Note that you will have a much better experience playing games if you use...

4. General BSW Information
Joe Lamer's Guide
You should check out Joe Lamer's excellent PDF, right here at the 'Geek. Look for the latest version of the BSW Guide, under Miscellaneous Game Accessory.

Jim Cote (ekted)
A great thread summarizing the highlights of BSW and the user interface, including some useful commands. I suggest, however, that you just use the .prop file linked in #2, above.

TheBoomer
Jeff Bakulchuk (TheBoomer) has put together a great site. You'll find a quick start guide, detailed game instructions, more information about the metagame, and much more! Unfortunately, I don't think it's being kept up to date any more.

5. English Town (ET)
This is the website for BSW's largest English-speaking town. The site has some useful information about the town and its citizens (now including ELO ratings). Consider joining and becoming a citizen of ET! Why? They have (almost?) all the games available in BSW. If you join, you automatically start in the town when you enter BSW, and you can enter the town chat channel. Plus, no taxes. Join by messaging the mayor (can change monthly). There's a town puppet "Archie" that you can use to leave a message: type "/tell Archie" then "@send TheBoomer message" - TheBoomer will get the message when he next signs on.
Why join? Well, if you're into the metagame: there are no taxes (probably a slew of other reasons I know nothing about). If not: when you enter BSW, ET members automatically appear in ET. That's nice because everyone speaks English, so it is easy to find and communicate with other opponents. Also, as one of the largest towns ET has game rooms for almost every game in BSW ... very convenient!
How to join? In BSW, go to ET and type "/tell TheBoomer (or whoever is currently mayor) Hi, Mayor! I would like to join your wickedly cool city ... may I?" in the main window. If (s)he is online, (s)he will message you back and tell you what's what.

Note: There are plenty of other cities, too, including one with lots of BGG Werewolf players, another with lots of Canadians, etc.

Big Top ("Solche Strolche")

http://www.brettspielwelt.de/Hilfe/Anleitungen/SolcheStrolch...

A solo game, found at /room C69-37. Click on the "Solche Strolche" sign to start. The grid on the left shows 25 animal/color combinations (5 animals, 5 colors). Click on the white square on the right: 4 animals will appear. Determine the animal/color combination missing, and click on that animal in the grid on the left. The animals will spin if you're correct. Click the white square to proceed to the next set of 4 animals ... the game ends when you've found all 25 missing animal/color combinations (the bar on the right shows how many cards are left). You're penalized for wrong clicks; lower times (faster) are better.

Flux

http://www.brettspielwelt.de/Hilfe/Anleitungen/Flux/

A solo puzzle available as one of the toolbar options (right click tool bar, and move it from the right window to the left one = active). It shows a 3x4 grid filled with colored dots and one empty square. You click an adjacent piece to move it to the empty square. The goal is to get the top and bottom rows to look exactly alike in as few moves as possible. Each game = 7 puzzles, with score = total #moves (lower is better).

Rotactical

http://www.brettspielwelt.de/Hilfe/Anleitungen/Rotactical/

A solo game, found at /room C31-69. The screen shows different rotational couplings, each having 4 compartments, connected via yellow tubes. Balls of different colors will come in at the top of the screen (next one to appear is shown in upper right). Each ball moves until it can fall into a space in one of the couplings. You rotate couplings by right-clicking. To eject a ball in a yellow tube, left click on it. When all 4 spaces are filled with the same-colored ball, the 4 balls disappear. You have a limited amount of time to get each ball into a compartment: when you're running out, the color of the bar at the top changes from green --> yellow --> orange --> red --> black. Then, a yellow vertical line runs along from right to left. If the line makes it to the left edge, you lose 1 life (green balls at the top of the screen). Your score so far is also shown on the top right. At higher levels, there are all kinds of funky obstacles (similar to RoboRally board elements).

Mah Jongg

http://www.brettspielwelt.de/Hilfe/Anleitungen/Mahjongg/

BSW's implementation of the American version, where you're just looking for matching pairs: just click on the matching tiles to remove them. The y must be on top and have at least one side exposed. You may pick 2 seasons or 2 flowers as a pair. The game ends when:

* You click on the end button to terminate the game.
* You have no more valid options available to you.
* You have successfully removed all the tiles.

Points are awarded according to the number of pairs removed and the time taken to complete.

Auf Achse (Convoy)

http://www.brettspielwelt.de/Spiele/AufAchse/

Drive trucks on the German highways, picking up and delivering little black cubes! I haven't played this one yet, because although the game is kind of fun (I've played once), it seems like it would be annoying to constantly have to look for those German cities since the full map doesn't fit on one screen (lots of scrolling up and down!)

Wizard

http://www.brettspielwelt.de/Hilfe/Anleitungen/Wizard/

Implemented November 2007. The scoresheet is a popup window -- hit the button in the upper right corner.

It also pops up when it's time to make your bid. It can be moved around, although it doesn't separate into its own window. Select the "notequal" option if you want to enforce a popular variant that disallows a sum of bids equal to the actual number of tricks.

Stone Age

http://www.brettspielwelt.de/Hilfe/Anleitungen/StoneAge/

Added May 1, 2008.

A very nice game in the vein of The Pillars of the Earth except this is simpler (easy resource-to-VP conversion) and a bit more random (roll a d6 per person placed in resource areas). The interface is pretty simple, too -- just click to place your men. You right-click (or command-click on the Mac) to undo placement. Move the mouse away from the BIG GREEN ARROW once you're done placing people.

RULES

Added 15 September 2008

Number of players 2-6 (online 4)
Gamelength 30-45 min
Category Racing game
Age 8+

A partnership variant of Sorry for 2 teams of 2 (blue/yellow vs. green/red). Each round, in a cycle of 5 rounds, players get 6/5/4/3/2 cards. Cards are blue numbers (=exact number of spaces to move forward) or red specials. At the start, trade 1 card with your partner (kept secret). On your turn, play a card (drag it to the pawn) to move your piece forward; may jump over pieces except in the goal area. If you land on a piece (except on Start spaces) it is returned to its starting area. You must use a card with an arrow to enter a piece onto the board: place piece on Start area. To get to the Goal area, you must move through the Start space (start before it and move through it to Goal). You may not jump over your pieces in the Goal area. If you're unable to move, must discard all your cards and pass for the rest of the round. After all your pieces are Home, you use your cards to help your partner.

Vikings (added January 2009)

http://www.brettspielwelt.de/Hilfe/Anleitungen/Wikinger/

BSW wrote:
Each player is leader of a Viking tribe. You have the goal of creating an undiscovered group of islands and then to colonize them with your boatsmen.

Gradually you expanded your territory and populate them with your men.

You send goldsmiths, scouts, fishermen and nobles to the newly discovered islands to build the most valuable settlements possible.

However, you must also provide warriors!

There are enemy ships already on the horizon ready to fight and threaten the colonies.

The acquisition of islands pieces and vikings is done via the bidding wheel. Through this, the cost of island tiles and men are determined. This ensures that the availability and cost of items always brings a surprise and makes for a close game.

An interesting game which captivate both families and older players.

Castle for all Seasons

http://www.brettspielwelt.de/Hilfe/Anleitungen/SchutzDerBurg...

Added 3 February 2009

Amidst craggy mountains, the first silhouettes of a monumental castle arise. A line of traders twists its way to the gate; and the hustle and bustle attracts many people in the hope of getting wages and victuals. The area is crammed with market booths; the magnificent castle is being enlarged around them.

Each player is a builder who, round for round, is able to use different character cards tactically. The constructing of this castle always culminates in an exciting final scoring. The player to produce the most victory points in the end deserves the protection of the castle and wins the game.

Numeri

http://www.brettspielwelt.de/Hilfe/Anleitungen/Numeri/

An old game, now part of Schmidt's EasyPlay series. Added October 2010.

- roll d6; may move your matching-numbered token (* is wild but moves only one token)
- move it to the next free space on the track (initially place it on the Start space)
- after any player's token has crossed a line (varies with number of players playing), rolls of 3 4 or 5 may be split between 2 of your tokens (3->1-2, 4->1-3, 5->1-4 or 2-3), but only if you can move both the other tokens
- if, with your move, you create 3 adjacent tokens of your color, go again (may do it repeatedly)
- game ends when last 3 spaces of the track are occupied
- final scores (for each token):
... (token number) x (number on that token's space)
... the multiplier for tokens never played to the board is -5
... highest sum wins

Atlantis

http://www.brettspielwelt.de/Hilfe/Anleitungen/Atlantis/

Added 6 January 2010

Seems similar to Cartagena: play cards to move your meeples forward on the pathway. Here, playing a card moves you to the next space with that color (but may not end on an already occupied space -- play another card to move past that space). May move over water spaces either by building a bridge (each player gets one/game; they cross all contiguous water spaces, for all players) or hiring a boat (for each water crossed on a turn, pay with collected tiles and/or cards according to the lower number on either side of each stretch of water crossed). Compared with Cartagena, however, the interface is smarter: select a pawn and all the possible destinations are highlighted for you! Collect the first unoccupied tile behind the space you land on, then draw movement card(s) (1 + number of meeples who have reached shore) to end your turn. The game ends when a player moves 3 meeples to shore (they do collect 4 cards). Other players' meeples are then moved to shore, losing points for crossing water as necessary. Each player's VP = sum of collected tiles + 1/card in hand; most VP wins (no tie breaker).

Don Quixote

Added 21 March 2010

BSW Info Page wrote:
DonQuixote is a jigsaw puzzle, where each player must try to interpret their tiles the best possible way, in order to build a road network which connects the maximum number of elements of the game (churches, windmills, knights). But even your best tile can, if played at the wrong time, scupper your plans plan. You need to continually look to optimize your tiles in your principality as the game plays out.

This plays up to 4 (solo game goal = score the highest possible points). From reading the rules only: seems like an interesting tile-laying Take It Easy style game, except backwards:
- the location to play is specified, and the same for all
- players get their pieces in semi-random order (each turn, you have a subset of your tiles from which to choose one to play each round)

The scoring also seems a bit convoluted, with several different ways to earn victory points; I expect initial games will require a player aid of some sort to remember them all (good thing a solo game is possible!).

Drachenherz

http://www.brettspielwelt.de/Hilfe/Anleitungen/Drachenherz/

Added 28 May 2010

A simple game for 2 players. Each player has an identical deck of cards showing pictures matching board locations, and point values 1-4. On your turn, play as many matching cards of a single type as you want (with limits for certain types); each may result in you collecting previously placed cards -- all pretty obvious from the arrows on the board. The dragon hunters and warriors, after collecting their prize, go to a discard pile; these are themselves collected when the third ship is played; the game ends (even turns) after the 9th ship. Score VP for all the cards you've collected.

Added 25 JUN 2010

BSW wrote:
Like its predecessor 6 Nimmt!, 11 Nimmt! is a card game about managing horned cattle. Each player attempts to play their ten cards so as to get the fewest negative points. The played card must be higher than all of the cards in the discard piles. If the card you play cannot be within 10 points of the card shown then you will take the discard pile. This is why it is called 11 Nimmt!
