Ticket to Ride is frequently recommended as a great gateway game and I've seen it used effectively as such. There are quite a few different games and expansions in the series now and I wanted to collect BGG community opinion on them.

So, what are the Ticket to Ride games and expansions that you consider great or terrible, and why. Please vote on the polls, but leave a comment on the items if you feel the answers don't quite capture what you'd like to say. Don't forget to thumb your personal favourite items.

Winners of poll competition: mccann98 (3GG), and runners up The_Piper, jonocop and red turtle.

I have some other game series and expansions polls

The original Ticket to Ride game. Criticised for balance issues with some routes and for the teeny tiny cards, it's still a best-selling game.

This is the best one. If TTR is best as a gateway game, then you want something familiar and simple. If I want to play something more complex, or with more experienced gamers, I play something else.

The other versions are a nice way to change things up if you have a crowd that really like the game and you find yourself playing it over and over.

If by familiar you're referring to the Geography, then Europe might be better over here. I think the stations also make the game a little more forgiving since you can borrow another player's track (at a cost) if you really get blocked in.

I live in the USA, and am certainly not familiar with the geography in this! Four cities are misplaced on the board!

The European map editions are hands-down the best versions!

Since the inception of this expansion the America map has become my absolute favorite of the series. Greatness if you ask me. Brings the simplicity of the base game with enough destinations to make it so even the most well seasoned TTR player can't predict where people are headed. Awesome.

I think this should come with the game, it's that essential.

1.) The large cards.
2.) If you're playing with 5 people, eventually destination cards become scarce. I know that scarcity can factor into how you play the game, but I would actually say that's a more 'advanced' or 'tournament' limitation that should be in place rather than whatever beginner players would start with.

Set on a map of turn of the century Europe (with local names), the geography of this map might be a little unfamiliar, but the game is still the Ticket to Ride we love.

This map adds a couple of new elements including station houses that allow players to sacrifice a few points to make use of another player's track, and tunnels which add an element of risk to building as they may require extra cards.

I prefer this over USA as a gateway game. There are a few more rules, but new players are able to use the stations if they get frozen out of a city along their route. The Eastern city names can be confusing, but I'm willing to fight through that for a little local flavor.

I prefer this over the USA board. I tend to introduce brand new players to the game without using stations and tunnels, then bring these components in for the second game.
This gives new (non-gamers) an easy intro, followed by a feeling that they're "good enough" to move up to the "advanced rules". This is both a feel-good element and a confidence boost, which all helps to bring new blood in to the hobby.

We frequently use this as a gateway game, or just a one-off game when we have some guests who we are unlikely to see for a while but we want our board game fix nonetheless

The map is familiar, people feel a sense of achievement as they understand it and the stations mean everyone should be able to reach some personal goals.

Europe has all the strong points of the original game and a few of its own, and basically no true weakness.

- It has normal-sized cards.

- It is not significantly more expensive than the original TtR.

- It can be played either with the same rules of original TtR or with its three built-in expansions (stations, ferries, tunnels).

- The map is fine and a bit of a variation from the many USA ones in the market.

- Most expansions work at least as well with Europe as they do with the basic game.

I will probably try Switzerland or Nordic Countries sometime. Perhaps 1912 as well. But I am happy that I chose to buy this instead of the original TtR.

I like this but found the six big routes aspect to be limiting in the end. I appreciate the attempt to balance the luck element of just happening to get a big route in the original, but something about this doesn't quite work for us - it just seemed to easy to figure out what each players big route is, making for too-predictable play.

A new mini-expansion similar to the 1910 Expansion for the original ticket to ride except aimed at Ticket to Ride: Europe. This one adds a whole new series of destination cards as well as the new Warehouses pieces which can be used with any TTR game.

Poll: Ticket to Ride; Europa 1912
1. Is this expansion a must-have for Ticket to Ride: Europe?
Yes! It really makes the TTR:Europe sing!
It's okay, I play with it
Not really, doesn't add much.
No! This is actively harmful.
2. Is this expansion good for TTR games other than Europe?
Yes, the warehouses are great!
It's okay for variety
It's not worth it, don't bother.

Names after the popular German model train maker, this game is played on a map of Germany with the edges of some neighboring countries. It adds passengers to the games which players try to move around in addition to completing routes as in a normal TTR game. For extra novelty, the board is in portrait orientation.

Stacking the little discs on each city makes the setup a real pain in the ass. They're easily bumped so they spill during gameplay as well. I plan on getting some smallish dice to place on each city instead.

That said, I do think the passenger mechanic is neat.

The passenger thing is not a bad idea and it adds some interesting elements to the decision-making. It's just... When I want to play something 'serious' I don't play Ticket to Ride. When I want to play a family-friendly gateway game I quite often play TtR:E but Märklin is too complicated for a gateway game (while still too simple and luck-dependent for a 'serious' fare). Märklin is like the Carcassonne: The City which makes the basic gateway game more complex in every possible way while it keeps the luck factor of the original.

Although it's unlike the City in that it doesn't add really cool wooden bits

I don't care one way or the other about the passengers, but I do like the higher quality of the components. It's been a while, so I don't remember what-all components were improved, but definitely the cards feel great, and I think the board is better.

This is the only TtR game I've played so I can't compare it to any of the others. We enjoy using the passengers more than any other part of the game even though they are fiddly to lay out. I often make the passengers my main tactic- their is something satisfying about jumping along someone elses train lines! devil

The Switzerland map was released as an expansion because it lacked the train pieces and train cards necessary to play (Europe or 1910 were sufficient to play). In all other respects it's a full game. It has tunnels like Europe (Switzerland has many tunnels), but adds special destination cards that require paris of neighboring countries to be connected rather than specific cities.

This was the first specific 2-3 player map.

The main problem with this one are all of the overlapping country-to-country routes that basically allow you to score double the points for a single route.

The simple solution we came up with was to disallow duplicate routes - you can only get credit for a connection once. The second card would ignore that route, but you can still score points for one of the shorter country connections on it (assuming you made the connection).

Similar to this, my wife and I simply remove the duplicate country-to-country routes from the deck. I dunno what they were thinking putting them in twice.

The main problem I've seen for the Switzerland expansion is that we often end with huge differences in score. I find this very disappointing as it was intended for 2 or 3 players. When my husband and I play other versions of Ticket to Ride (Original, Europe, Marklin) our scores are much, much closer. Also Switzerland often turns into a ticketfest: taking more tickets in hope of duplicates or tracks already covered. The player lucking into the right ticket draws usually wins the game.

I think the tickets from Mystery Train are in the 1910 expansion, but the role cards aren't.

This expansion replaces the set/card collection mechanic with dice rolling providing railroad dice and a special dice cup. It may be telling that this even received a scathing review from Tom Vasel

Poll: Ticket to Ride: Dice Expansion
Is this expansion a must-have?

Yes! It really makes the base game sing
It's okay, I play with it sometimes
Not really, doesn't add much.
No! This is actively harmful.

This rather distant member of the family replaces the board and nifty plastic trains with a memory element of keeping track of what cards you've managed to accumulate in your stacks.

Poll: Ticket to Ride: The Card Game
Is this game a must-have Ticket to Ride?

Yes! It's my favourite of all of them
Yes. It's a great Ticket to Ride
It's okay, I might play it sometimes
Maybe if you're bored of all the others
No, it doesn't add anything.
This isn't a Ticket to Ride game!

A Ticket to Ride card game might be. The one that actually got made, no.

I love this one, particularly as an easily-explained, short-to-medium length game, but it loses much of the feel of the Ticket To Ride board games. No train pieces, no board, the memory element and color preemption inhibit the set collection feel. A great game with overtones of TtR, but a distant cousin more than a sibling.

My siblings loved this game. So much so that they didn't want to play Ticket to Ride but rather would have me pull this out.

So I sold it. shake

I found it boring with very little interaction. I have lots of games and it was eating into the good stuff. I wasn't going to have that.

You can have a ton of interaction if you hold back and play colors to screw over your opponent.

The best Ticket to Ride game by far. In my opinion. Since it's a bit more complicated.

In a fit of whimsy, I just developed the all new Ticket to Ride: The Catapult expansion. It probably took more time than the Dice Expansion. The title of this item is a link to the thread where I discuss the rules and how to play. We're a bit short of pictures because noone has tried it yet.

This expansion adds dexterity, luck, and the phrase "Catapult the Choo-Choo" to the game, as well as allowing more direct player interaction and a way to get back links you've been blocked from. Even better, the inevitable loss of pieces will sell more games for Days of Wonder.

So, on to the poll.

Poll: Ticket to Ride: The Catapult
12. Is this expansion a must-play-with?

Yes! It really makes the base game sing
It sounds okay, I'm going to play with it sometimes
Not really, doesn't seem to add much.
No! This is actively harmful. People might die!
You're kidding. This isn't even a real expansion. Yet.
13. Should Days of Wonder produce this?
Yes! I want a piece of paper with the rules printed on it.
No! Don't be ridiculous
No. But they probably will anyway.

I don't need a catapult, what we really need is a B-52 and a Quad Flak...

Yeah baby, that's the real "Ticket to Ride - 1945 Edition; Duel at the Rails (and maybe in the Dark)"

My personal favorite is also Europe, though we haven't played the Nordic Countries enough that I'd yay or nay it.

When we play the base game (with the 1910 expansion), my wife makes fun of me when I take a second to find a city I "should know where it is". I don't have that problem with the other maps (yet).

US + 1910 is probably the best in terms of introducing someone new to the series, though I have found trying them on Europe works alright. The additional elements make them feel like they're advanced or something, I dunno.

And, I love the Switzerland package, in no small part because I can't help but imagine them doing more maps this way. Low-cost expansions? Yes Prz!

My absolute favorite is Ticket to Ride: Iowa. I might be a little biased though since I live in the state. Overall I've had the most fun playing on this board.

Having not yet played Europe, I wonder why it is so popular. What I mean is, am I better off with my Switzerland and Nordic maps for 3 players vs. Europe? Is Europe a better map with 3 than USA? Doesn't the train station thing make the game a bit too relaxed? Is Europe the ultimate map for 5 players, in part because of the stations?

Europe looks good to me, and I like the layout of the tracks.

Finally, what are the specific issues you guys have found with imbalance in the USA board. Is it the layout of the board, the distribution of the routes, or both?
