This was my second KublaCon. A couple of friends that I met in kindergarten, one from high school and I got together to have a jam-packed weekend reunion of gaming in the Bay area.
We had a lot of fun, ate too much, paid too much to eat and gamed (not enough) this past Memorial Day.
Here's what we played.

FRIDAY
After getting checked in and settled, we went down to the open gaming area and Nate introduced Orc Wars to us. Nate has a thing for orcs and the HeroCard system. So this was an obvious add to his collection.
Adam and Nate had played HeroCard games before. Mark and I were new to them.
This was an interesting game. There were a lot of innovative mechanics. I kind of wished that the ranged heroes had more ranged attacks. But I the game is tied to the system. All in all a fun game.
We had to cut the game short just a bit to get to our next game.

We got into a massive game of Man O' War. We were set up for eight players, but only seven showed up. Nate played the Chaos Dwarves, Adam was the Chaos Khornes(?), Mark was the Empire and I played the Dwarves. Nate and I sat directly opposite each other and had navies that were mortal enemies, so we paired off to duke it out. The same went for Adam and Mark. The other three players battled it out on the other side of the big island and their game didn't effect us at all.
I was decimated by Nate's navy. Mark and Adam were evenly exhausted. One of the three players on the other end of the table cleaned up there with the Bell of Doom and ran away with the score and won the game.
Very fun game.

SATURDAY
The other guys signed up for a game of Legends of the Old West and there was a possibility that I wouldn't get in. So I signed up for Bonaparte at Marengo. I've always wanted to try this out. Especially since it is SO hard to find at a reasonable price.
I was so glad that I tried this. Granted this was a learning game and there is a steep learning curve from your first game to your second. I really liked it and would like to play it again.

Unfortunately, I didn't get a picture of this game. The guys were still defending the Alamo in their Legends of the Old West game.
So I signed up to play Conflict of Heroes; another game I've been dying to try out.
Kent Reuber and I went head-to-head in a game that was a learner for each of us. We decided to simply get a feel for the game and play the introductory scenario. I liked the game, but decided it was too stop/start for my tastes. I'm also not a huge fan of the jumps in probability in a straight 2d6; especially for mismatched CAP prices.
Granted we weren't using any vehicles or cards. I liked the game, will play it again, but I probably won't buy it.

The last game that we played Saturday night was an epic game of B-17: Queen of the Skies.
We played with three formations of six planes each. So there were 18 bombers/players in all heading to our target in Frankfurt.
Ron Plunk, the game runner, really went all out. He had wall maps, an overhead projector, he was in costume and we colored and named our planes and formations.
Our formation, Whisky Tango Fabulous!, was made up of The Waltzing Matilda, The Sour Kraut, Pac Man (Adam's younger brother Aaron showed up and joined us), The High Roller, Calipa ???, and our flight leader's unimaginative sans-designation plane.
Our formation only lost one plane and we met little opposition to and from our target. It would have been nice to have seen a lot more bombers on the ground.
The Waltzing Matilda made it back to England with a dead radio operator and a frostbitten bombadier.

SUNDAY
Nate had some churchin' to take care of Sunday morning. Adam, Mark and I went into the open gaming den and played a game of Red November.
I brought this one and I thought they would like the theme and play of the game.
We met all of our challenges handily. Except one. Mark was trapped in a flooded compartment just as we cruised into port. We learned the dangers of keeping too many compartments lightly flooded. Whoops.

Adam signed up for another game of Legends of the Old West.
By this time Nate was back from church and we set out Temple of the Beastmen.
This is a game that I always wanted to play. I am a huge fan of Space: 1889 and Sky Galleons of Mars. I wanted to shout "Beastmen in the Shaft!"
We had our ups and downs during this game. Mark was on top of the leaderboard. Then I was and it was clear that I was the obvious winner. Then I lost everything and Nate shot to victory. Very interesting, early dungeon crawl set in a very cool theme.

I bought this at the flea market a couple nights before and had it with me. We had a fellow named Edward and a young man (Sorry, I forgot your name!) join us. By this time Adam was back from his Legends game.
Mark had control of the security HQ the whole game and we found out that the best way to keep that from happening again was to let the security room get attacked by zombies. Edward and I were completely eliminated first. Shortly thereafter, the game ended with Mark as the Redneck winner.

This is a game Nate and Mark have been itching to get to the table.
Edward stuck around and Aaron showed up and joined us for this one.
This is a funny game of ridiculous deception. It took some of us a couple rounds to get the feel for the flow. Edward and I both had two false expeditions under our belt and were racing to get our third and last one's finished. I barely (BARELY) scraped in to win.

We moved to the atrium's open gaming'; a much airier, less gamer-musky area.
Aaron, Adam, Nate, Mark and I played Federation Commander next. I bought this nearly a year ago and had not yet played it. I read the rules and my brain nearly rejected its host. Adam, Nate and Aaron were familiar with the game and taught Mark and I how to play. Once explained, that reference book (disguised as a game manual) started making sense.
Nate and I were the Federation. Mark and Aaron played the Klingons. Mark and I captained heavy cruisers. Aaron and Nate captained two frigates each. Adam was our referee, reference material and moderator.
The Federation started out strong, but we fell to the Klingon's superior planning.
I am so excited to play my copy of it now!

After FedComm, we played another HeroCard game: Nightmare. Aaron headed home.
This has an extremely interesting theme. The game is a deduction game where nearly all of the information gleaned is open to everyone. We learned, we played, we learned some more. I found out some dirt on Mark. I found out some info on everyone else, but I was so tired that I could only focus on Mark. I eliminated Mark. Adam eliminated me. And I was SO tired I can't remember if Adam eliminated Nate or vice versa.

MONDAY
Mark bought Arkham Horror on Sunday and we played this as our last play of the con. We battled Cthulhu as Mandy Thompson (Nate), Monterey Jack (Mark), Harvey Waters (Adam) and Darrell Simmons (Me). It's been a while since I've played vanilla Arkham and it found its simplicity refreshing.
We really kept everything in check. Monster limit was always kept in check. So were gates. The terror level never rose and Cthulhu only had seven doom tokens on him when sealed our sixth gate. A very decisive victory! It would have sucked to be devoured as we closed this KublaCon.
