Many games originate in Germany. Some of them are released in English, but many of them aren't. But I know that some of you play the German games even if you don't know any German. Now, most of those game names are hard to pronounce for non-Germans, which is not surprising, as German pronunciation, while being much more regular in itself than English pronunciation for example, is still quite different from many others. Searching BGG, I have found a few threads and geeklists about this topic. Daniel Ott started a list trying to explain the pronunciation of game names, and apparently there once were a few audio files, which are, however, no longer available. I also have to make honorable mention here of Alex Eaton-Salners, who did a great job with his "German for Gamers" lists, and apparently a non-German native speaker at that.
So this geeklist is another attempt at spreading love an understanding for the German language. Don't get me wrong, I love the English language; so much so, in fact, that I made it my profession (I am a freelance translator). And please don't take this as preaching or lecturing, but rather as my way of contributing to our community and helping those of you interested in this sort of thing to finally get those weird German names right.
I aim to cover all German game names in the database that have no English alternate names (and maybe some that do if I feel like it). I am adding games in irregular intervals, but if you guys have a particular game name that you would like to know the pronunciation and/or translation of, just add a new empty post with the game or drop me a PM. I will then add the audio file and translation as soon as possible.
I will sort this list alphabetically because I think that will make it easier to find a particular game. Please drop me a PM if you think otherwise.
P.S.: I try to speak slowly and clearly so as to make it easier to distinguish the individual sounds, but forgive me for not having a perfect radio voice. I do my best.
Also, I am uploading the files through a free web hoster, where they will be deleted if they are not accessed for a certain period of time. So if any audio file is no longer available, please drop me a PM.
