We all think (or at least hope), when we buy a new game that it's going to be great. That it will be one of the best games we ever bought and we won't even think about another game for several months because this one is so good.

But sometimes, the new game isn't quite up to it. And sometimes it all goes terribly wrong and it's a game you really wish you had not bought.

So what was your last mistake?

To be fair not the worst game I ever bought, (Say hello Smokers Wild) but the last one I regretted. The thing is it's not awful it just seems a bit pointless. It's dumbed down Rummy, so if you like Rummy, play Gin Rummy and if you don't like Rummy, you won't like this.

I did write a review giving more details. This explains my view in more detail.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/396100

This game was recycled through BGG within about a week of me buying it.

Have you played the other "Mystery Rummy" card games, and if so, how does Bonnie and Clyde compare to the others?

I have Wyatt Earp , which was made before 'Mystery Rummy'. It's by the same designer and is Mystery Rummy game in all but name and that is very good.

For my full views see this review.

Is this a criminal game?

Wyatt Earp was published later than several of the Mystery Rummy games, and I'm pretty sure it was created later, as well. My understanding was that it was a deliberate attempt by Mike Fitzgerald to create a MR game that played best with 3. (Jack the Ripper is best with 2, Rue Morgue best as a 4-player partnership game, and Jeckyl & Hyde is 2-player only.)

I think Bonnie and Clyde is quite good, but I refuse to play it with the cards provided, which make it almost impossible to play. I just took the A-10 of three standard decks of cards and play with those instead. Try again with legible cards and I think you can start to see the layers of the game.

I don't regret it so much as I have to admit it'll never get played... It's way too big and the rules way too long (not necessarily too complex, but too involved). I bought it for the theme, though, so I only have myself to blame... shake

This is actually a really good game if you have the version 3.5 rules. Currently, the problem with the Red Sash games (IMHO) are a lack of Cyberboard or Vassal modules to play them online.

Amen! (to the previous poster who said this was actually a fine game). I played the full Tuerkenkrieg & Heirs of the Golden Horde at CSW Expo 09 (Monster) this year and enjoyed it immensely. Those 2 games are tough going (but I knew this and even welcomed it). Charlie's Year is actually a smaller scale (in units and area, but otherwise the same as the others in the Lace War series), and with the period appeal and beautiful counters (nice plaids!), it is an excellent introductory game for this series if you are interested in the period and the level of warfare the designer intends to show gamers.

Yes, the 3.5 edition rules do help - they offer a much easier / streamlined system for combat and other concepts, but you can still use the older rules for more detail there. There must be some other gamer(s) in Scotland who would be willing to give this handsome game a try (!) ...

It is a beautiful game, and as I only bought it a month or two ago I'd think my rules were up to date. But it's just too big for me, the rules, the map and the number of counters. I'll admire it and keep reading the rulebook. Maybe someday - I did eventually play The Siege of Jerusalem after less than 20 years on my shelf... shake

You are so right

The new edition is disappointing, the map in uselessly big, the new cards added to the deck are a pointless burden and the "improvement" of the record keeping system is clumsy.

If you can go past this and try the game you'll find that it's a valid simulation of running a medieval kingdom; well, nobody said it was all fun and games, isn't it?

Buying an expansion for a base game which I don't own.

It's hard enough having fully playable games sitting shrink-wrapped and unplayed. They mock me but it doesn't sting as bad when I can pull them off the shelf at any time.

This 'game' has brought a level of regret I hadn't yet realized was in me. I have no leverage with this expansion... it owns me. It reminds me constantly that I'm worthless unless I go out and buy its base game. And when I do pick it up, it wasn't out of my own will, it's because it made me.

I feel like I sold my freedom for $2 at the thrift store.cry

I won Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game in a Math Trade, but it was coming from Canada! So, weeks and weeks before it arrived, I succumbed to temptation and bought Last Night On Earth: Growing Hunger, Last Night on Earth 'Stock Up' Supplement and Last Night on Earth 'Revenge of the Dead' Supplement which therefore sat unused (but carefully read and reread...) and useless until the game arrived.

Never have I been more grateful for a trustworthy, honest Math Trader

my group did not like it either...seemed like a lot of coolness that amounted to obscuring clear victory goals and paths. We felt like we were playing a system instead of competing. Great bits but a big disappointment.

good news is that I traded it the next day on the geek with no problem.

I had pretty high hopes for this, and it might play a bit better with more experienced players than we were, but this turned out for me to be an overlong, underthemed disappointment, and a fairly pricey one. Not enough flavor, too much abstraction, too many distinctions in the contests that didn't amount to enough. The worst of it is, I had this traded away on a math trade, then ended up having to leave my copy behind when my wife and I split, then ended up buying a second copy to complete the math trade. So I actually regret buying AoC twice.

It's definitely a game where at least one person should know the game fairly well as advice is needed to newbies who won't quite know what to do (ie. the infamous analysis paralysis).

It's not a wargame nor a strategy game. It's a Eurogame. Shame it has nothing whatsoever to do with Conan.

I bought this game too, my local game store was selling a copy of it for 50% off on boxing day. I'm a huge Conan fan, so this was an easy decision at the time. Unfortunately, I've never been able to get it to the table due to lack of interest and opinions made from BGGers. I'm not sure what's happening with the expansion, but maybe it will spark some interest in my game groups, until then I'll hang on to it. I would probably regret it more if I paid full price and there was no word on an expansion, my hopes are the the expansion will fix some of the issues people have mentioned in the forum's.

I do like the punish the leader mechanic (well more specifically the punish the leader IF they got in the lead by being the most corrupt). This can be a rough mechanic for new players who feel like they are winning but then end up losing and being fed to the crocs!

Yeah, a part of me is starting to think that about this game, like you. I have taught it several times at our games club, and its first play seems to go well as people engage with the components and the food theme, but after playing it many times, and watching it played while I was teaching, I feel that it is not a game experience I actually enjoy.

I can't put my finger on what it is I feel uncomfortable about, but my intuition is pushing this game away.

I couldn't agree more. I've played the game three or four times, and watched it played one or two others. I just can't understand why it's so popular, but I recognize that lots of people really like it. Of course, I don't like Agricola either, so maybe it's just me?

On on the fence about regretting this one... I quite enjoy playing Wasabi, though if I'm going to take the time to set it up I prefer to play 2 or 3 times in a row. I've played it two-player. It's not a two-player game. Also, you've got to have the back-stab mentality. Without blocking, switching tiles and covering tiles up, it's ho-hum.

Our group is pretty large, and the screw-your-neighbor philosophy is pretty low, usually just used at key times.

This would really work, forgetting the theme of sushi, with a group of guys who have played together for years and really enjoy thwarting each others' plans.

oh oh another one.
possibly not that bad a game. But I could not get past the badly designed "internationalised" icons. Please please, when making a game that has a lot of variable powers and abilities, write it on the card or board! do not make an awful, inscrutible icon system that forces you to constantly refer to the rulebook....I know this is due to making the game affordable to localise, without major changes to the graphics etc etc but for this game it makes it nigh on unplayable straight off the bat.
I hope you're enjoying it Minty

I felt exactly the same at first, but after just one or two plays the icons all made perfect sense and I didn't have to look up the chart any more - they are pretty well designed and logical, and many of them come up so often you get plenty of chances to remember them!

If you really think that Ghost Stories and Arkham Horror are that similar then you haven't played one or both of these games. shake

Or are you just trolling? Oops, I guess I fell for it.

Ghost Stories is the best game I own to this date. The icons are easy enough to learn after you've seen them a couple of times.
Without being disrespectful, I must admit that this game is not for everyone.

I used to be an avid wargamer and partial to very complex, immersive games like ASL. So I figured I might like a heavily themed game that I can really lose myself in imaginatively and emotionally. I heard this one is solo-friendly, and I didn't like the theme of Arkham Horror, so I gave this a try.

Halfway into my first (and only) solo game, I said to myself, "This is stupid. All I'm doing is moving almost randomly around the map, jumping on colored dots, and rolling all-too-similar battle results over and over.

I noticed I wasn't bothering to read the card text after a while, and I'm guessing the cards and story are a big deal for fans of this game. Turned out not to be my thing at all.

One bright spot: My wife saw the game set up in my room and asked about it. She said it looks interesting. So, maybe we'll try it together someday.

I've had my money's worth of Runebound and I've played it several times over -- but you really do rely on the expansions to keep the game fresh.

Thankfully, those expansions vary in price and impact, but unfortunately it means more money spent.

I think it's instinctual to treat this as a toy out of the box. The trick is to get past that point and start playing it as a game.

It's definitely a different kind of dexterity. There's an unusual amount more subtlety to it then simply having a sharper eye, steadier hand or softer touch. I began to think of it after a while as an area-control game disguised in a dexterity's body. Not to say that the great elements of a dexterity don't still exist. (For example: when the board starts to fill up, things can get tense when going in for your turn and the slightest magnetic pull sends a flutter through the pieces on the board-- and in player's stomachs.) But it's more about how you establish your territory and make life harder for the opponent.

All that being said, it isn't as pick-up and play as some other dexterities like Crokinole or PitchCar where all you have to do is sit down and start flicking. So it can take some 'toying around' to get to where it can be played as intended.

Anyway, my purpose was to hopefully help you feel less regret. Hope that helps a little.

I agree completely about Polarity being an area control game. I think it is brilliant in this sense because it is not a set of written rules around which you develop a strategy for controlling territory, but around the natural laws of physics.

A very innovative card-driven strategic war game. I have had some very good games of Clash of Monarchs. The one weakness is that between sides there is competition but among members of each side nobody cares who wins. In this way it is not really a multi-player game like Diplomacy, Here I Stand, Pax Romana, and so on.

The game certainly worths it in my book, given its research and study that you can get to see. The Winter and Spring interface administration work might be troublesome as if they have been a complete different game inside. However, once you are over with them, the rather standard structure in Summer and Fall seasons replicate so many decisions the Monarchs have to make are so historically plausible. An atmospheric game with may subtleties to explore and I will explore them in the many years to come. So, no regret from my part.cool

This is all crazy talk! I game regularly with hard-core grognards here in NYC and we all love this game. It simply cannot be compared to a Euro and yes, it is a light wargame. Like Pocket Battles, C&C: A, Memoir '44, etc. To say it's too light for wargamers is absolutely nonsensical. To dislike the design is one thing. To say wargamers don't play it is just silly. Wargamers play all sorts of light wargames. It's not about "oh my stars and garters, into which genre does this fall??", it's "Is this a good design?" My group says yea, your group says nay.

GMT do it because it is a cash-cow for GMT's other less and much less popular wargames on the serious line - Fields of Fire, Calsh of Monarchs, Downtown: Air War over Hanoi etc. To a certain extent, the more serious wargamers should respect this game, however it is ahistorical and generic. The bottom line is this game is deeper than the usual Kinizier themed Euro with methamatical problems. If you want to get in quick and get out fun, this is the game. I didn't purchase it because I don't have the expectation of it. I don't mind to play it to fill the time up though.

I really enjoy Manoeuvre -- it's a fast-playing load of fun on top of a Napoleonic theme. For a wargame, the rules are low on complexity, well laid out and easy to follow. Gameplay is very suspenseful; fortunes are reversed constantly. The outcome is usually either a.) I get aggravated and lose, or b.) I get aggravated and win.

Never lost sleep over whether it's a wargame for eurogamers or a eurogame for wargamers. I typically play with family; they don't read boardgamegeek and so never learned those words.

I was looking at this as a Pacific War alternative to ASL, since I don't care for Code of the Bushido very much. For me, the issue was the scale. Platoon-level Pacific combat just didn't do it for me - at least not the way PG simulates it. Fortunately, I found Combat Commanderacific and haven't looked back.

Oh yeah. CC is pretty much what I want to see in a tactical level PTO game. It's got fields of hemp, for goodness sakes!

I'll be very interested to see if Conflict of Heroes ever goes PTO. That's the game I suggest to people who think CC doesn't give the player enough control.

For a game so poorly rated in this thread, you don't see it for sale at cheap, or even reasonable prices. I think I saw it on Ebay for like $45 or something. If it was $20 or $25, I might be more tempted to get a copy. At that price, even if it was a bit rough around teh edges, I think I could make it work for me. I love the subject matter, which just might make the difference.

This is the best CDG I ever played. Perfect balance between playability and and historical feel. Great game, tense and diverse.

Rules might scare you away but important is to read the handouts first and then play the extended samples of play. that will get you going very quickly.

I don't get people who buy a complicated game (and PuG makes no pretensions of being Twilight Struggle) and then badmouth it for being - surprise - complex.

I've played every GMT CDG and PuG is among the most tense and fun. It is not, however, Settlers of Catan.

But there are plenty of opponents. One can download Cyberboard then go to ACTS and get a game going most any time. In fact, I'll play you if you want.

The rather obvious lesson here is that if you don't have the time or opponents, and aren't willing to play online, then don't buy the higher complexity games. That way, no regrets.

At her request I bought this game for my wife for Christmas last year. We played it once with six players. We went through all of the cards for Actionland and Thinkingtown in one game. We put it away for several months, and recently got it out once more. It's just not that good...

Thank goodness I played a friends copy because seriously the dice were fun to play with. But thats it-the game part sucked. We also went through all the cards in one play and were wondering how in the world you would ever play it again. We did end up playing a weird version of charades with the picture and word dice though so even though the game wasn't fun we found a silly way to enjoy the components. Of course I will never know if that was true enjoyment of the dice or the fact that it was 3 am and not everyone was sober.

Annoying abstract. Has nothing to do with the Tigris or Euphrates. It's just a tick-tack-toe game that costs $50.

Thats what [Knizia] does; create a nifty game system and then figure out how to arrange a theme around it. As many of you say, it has nothing to do with ancient Iraq.

That's actually not true. It *is* true that his games are often fairly abstract, even by the standards of Eurogames, but it's well-known that he very often starts with a theme and sees what game develops from it. The relationship between that original theme and the final published game can be fairly remote, admittedly, since often the publishers will re-theme games based on their sense of what the market wants. (Knizia is far from the only victim of this latter effect.)

That said, it's hard to imagine a theme that would fit the mechanics of Tigris & Euphrates better than the one it has--empires grow and fight and decay from within, catastrophes lay waste, and everything revolves around the rivers at the heart of the land. That isn't to say there can't be games which better evoke the theme--I would say After the Flood is more thematically rich, though at thrice the playing time and much greater rules complexity. But I don't think that any other theme for E&T would fit the mechanics as well.

Actually Knizia starts with a theme, he develops some mechanics around the theme, abstracts the mechanics to the point they don't relate to the theme anymore, finds a new theme that better fits the mechanics, fiddles with the mechanics to the point that he's lost the theme again, changes the theme again, then sells it to a publisher who changes the theme once more.

I was a little disappointed -- just seems kind of dry. Additional downside is accidentally gluing one of the monuments to the kitchen table. Though I can't blame that on Knizia.

On the plus side, the kids like it. Also, I find it intriguing that the lady depicted on the right side of the box cover is holding a small clay jar as if she's waiting for Smith & Wesson to produce their first .357.

I think one of the reasons that so many on this thread don't like it is that they haven't played it enough to appreciate the depth of strategy involved in this game. This is a game that becomes better and better the more times you play it and if you only play it once or twice, especially with players that also haven't played it much, I can absolutely see why you wouldn't like it.

Well said. I really wanted to like this game, but the 30-60 minute estimated playtime is a lie. There are simply too many cards that "reset" the game - taking away weapons, taking away townsfolk, or even taking away points. The last time I played we were 1.5 hours into the game and one player out of the 5 playing had 6 points. The rest had zero.

We decided to play to 7 points instead of 30...

Colosseum is such a good game. My friends and I try and get it out whenever we are all together. It flows so quickly, has some good decisions to make, has very little luck and just works. Well worth the $30 I paid for it.

No offense to those many people who seem to love it, but I read many comments of people who loved "For Sale" and the theme sounded great... but I get this expensive game ($25 +postage) for basically 2 decks of cards! But several people told me it was great, so I tried it anyway, but it's sooooooo random and simple...

I just didn't get it.shake

This is one of the most addictive games I know, plays extremely fast and after a game finished you just want to play again. I once brought this to a café with 2 friends and one of them said he hated card games but after we played once he wanted to play again and didn't want to stop, I think we played 7 games of For Sale in a row that night. And it's for sure not a game with a lot of luck, you just have to know when to stop bidding, wonderful stripped down to the core bidding game with bluffing as well.

At least this board game revived my interest in playing the computer game. Sadly though it now takes up a ton of room on my game shelf. Perhaps I'll have to pull it out again sometime and try playing with more than 2 players. I should enjoy that more, right? RIGHT?!

I didn't buy it, but I basically totally disagree with almost all the coments here. I liked the card-based combat (though it wasn't intuitive). The game is a blast. Problems can arrive in the setup. If things aren't properly balanced, than certain players will have an incredible advantage.

The only thing I don't like about it (at all) is that I've never seen it played to the end. Kind of like A&A, there reaches a certain point where you just call it, and I always think that a game should end, not called.

Sorry you didn't like the game. My experience has been the opposite. My brother and I love this game. We also enjoy the computer versions. I will admit that there is a lot of upkeep in the game. But the combat system rocks. In fact, you could probably just play with the combat cards and leave everything else in the box.

It is not a bad game, however, I just never warmed up to it. Whenever we want to play a game of this type, ND always seems to lose to the classics (i.e. Puerto Rico, Goa, Princes of Florence, Amun Re etc.)

I bought this, played a couple of times, then left it for a couple of years. I tried it again last night, though, and I think there is a game in there that I would enjoy if I ever played it semi-regularly. I don't think I'll get this to the table as a family game, though.

The map layout is bizzare. And it means that few people willhave a table big enought to play this as you realy need all three maps. I have a fairly large gaming table and I've hd no truoble fit three mappers on it, but this game map layout is just too badley thought out.....although perhaps it wasn't thought out and there in lies the problem!

Heard some good buzz on this. Tried a couple of the many different complexity levels. At the higher end I have no idea what they're talking about. As a matter of fairness, I'm not exactly a huge baseball fan. But man this is boring. For comparison, I'm not a fencing fan, but I enjoy En Garde.I'm not a car racing fan but enjoy Detroit-Cleveland Grand Prix (a lot), etc. Both of those games are highly abstracted. Maybe if Knizia lived in USA he could do a abstracted baseball game with decent mechanics. cool

When I saw this print and play on the net it impressed me. It has an interesting concept, really nice artwork, and an unusual theme (think reverse pandemic).

Anyway I bought it, and spent the better part of a Sunday putting it all together as best I could. When I got it to the table at the club it hooked in a couple of players easily.

Then it flopped. It was repetitive, the cards didn't really do a damn thing. Worst of all, we played for over an hour, and our score markers were nearly all on top of each other. Dispite all we tried, the way the game works stopped anyone from getting ahead. the game was decided by the dice roll to see who went first on the last turn, which was the unpleasent tasting icing on the cake.

When I got home I sat down and wrote a whole A4 page of rejigs for the rules to try and shake it up a bit, but I havn't really got the interest to take it to the table again and try them.

Yup, and we found it balanced out. The high mortality viruses did'nt get many counters on the board, but a good number of what they did place died (you score points for each sick population counter that dies in this game, for those that don't know).

But this was balanced by the fact that the highly infectious (but less deadly) viruses would loose a lower persentage of their overall number on the board, and keep up. Mainly because they had so many more counters on the board.

Awesome list! It's interesting to read so many differing opinions. When I peruse the list and see games I like, I am nonplussed, but I see way more games that I avoided because I thought they wouldn't be fun, interesting, or exciting. Did I dodge bullets or did these chroniclers just have regretful experiences? It's really hard to judge.
