We've all got games that seem to have taken up a permanent residence on our wishlist for a variety of reasons. Let's take a look at what's there and why. I'll start.

I doubt I'll ever own this. It's out of print, used versions cost around $100, and even if I owned it I would only get to play it once every couple years, I imagine. I'll have to settle for playing my friend Doug's version every couple years.

This one has not exactly been on my wishlist as something I want to play, but just something I would love to have for the bizarre history of it. This wargame was published in the 1974 LDS Church Book of Mormon Seminary Manual. I was able to track down the map and rules from the teacher's edition of the manual, but the pieces were only published in the Student Version. That version appears to be lost. The LDS Church History Library doesn't even have a copy in their archives.

Mostly I am just curious about how an honest-to-goodness wargame made it into an official LDS church publication. What gamer fan pulled the right strings to get that approved? And how did students react to it when it was pulled out? Did anyone get their introduction to wargaming through this old game?

I keep checking eBay and the thrift stores around town for a copy of the student manual but in over a year of looking I haven't seen it.

A game that plays in the style of San Juan and Race for the Galaxy but supports 5 players... count me in. The most common number of players we get on Wednesday night is 5 so despite liking San Juan a lot I haven't played it in the flesh for over a year now. But the problem with Glory to Rome is...

it's just so damn hard to get hold of. I understand that the publisher is a small company and can't afford to do huge print runs and carry all that stock if it does not sell but the game has gotten so much good press that there are a lot of us out here wanting to give it a go. I wish that they would consider licensing it to one of the big players who could keep us all happy while still providing a revenue stream so that they can develop more games.

I'm a fan of Stefan Dorra's games and I think that this one sounds like it has an interesting auction point scoring trade off. But it is out of print and in a place like New Zealand impossible to find.

I have considered making my own version of this but I'm fussy about the pawns have not found any that match my standards yet.

Did I mention that I was a bit of a Dorra fan? This one sounds like a nice fun way to round out an evening when you don't want to think too hard. And there times like when the Olympics or Commonwealth Games are on that you'd just have to play it.

I thought about trying to print a copy when I last did an Arts Cow order but didn't have a complete list of the cards. And Art Cow cards aren't that good a quality anyway. I'd much rather have the original but once again it is out of print.

I had a copy of this with both expansions that I had painted up so you could tell the walls from the floor. Looked pretty good but I sold it to a friend planning to get a new copy and still have some money left over. Paint that one up but learning from some minor mistakes on the first set.
Little did I know that it was nowhere to be found.

There are a few games already on this list that are on my "wish to have, but highly likely I never will"

Crokinole - just too expensive, my significant other would never allow it.

Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit - Too rare, and when I do find it.. see above

Another game that falls into this category for me that is not on the list also has the fact that its a limited overseas release.

Affentennis This game looks and sounds so fun and cool, but all I can do it imagine how fun/cool it actually is.

Rare - check

Too Expensive - check

never seen it available - check

I've been looking for this for ages. The only copy I've come across was as new, still in its shrink-wrap for £60. The problem is that I want to actually play it, and I know that the 'still in shrink its wrap' status is pushing the price up by quite a bit.

I'm amazed that 80+ entries on this list, and Republic of Rome wasn't mentioned yet.

My reasons are:
- it's expensive (~ $100 on the `bay)
- the reprint is always delayed
- best played with 4+ players for 3+ hours... good luck finding that many people willing to play for that long

I played this once in college and loved it - for the gameplay, for the history, for the roleplaying - but I doubt I'll be able to recapture that fun now, even if the first 2 objections are overcome.

Back in 1999-2000 I bought not one, but two copies of TwixT in the original chubby box (the box to the right) off eBay. I think I paid about $25 for one, and the other I bought paired with Foto-Electric Football for less than $10. (Note to eBay sellers: Do not sell a classic game bundled with something else. Most buyers skip over it. I got Acquire with wooden tiles for $50 packed with four other games.)

The links in these two sets were plastic and flat, while the links in later sets are three dimensional. The posts in one set were just like the posts in later sets. The posts in the other set were wood, and were shaped quite like the posts in the cover picture (though the artist exaggerated the height). I have never heard of anyone but me who ever saw these wooden posts.

Then my life went to hell, and all my stuff went into storage. I am now in Seattle with my life in reasonable order, and I have brought all my junk up to Seattle. I cannot find my two copies of TwixT in the chubby box. crycrycry

EBay sellers have gotten a little smarter, and this game does not go as cheap as it used to. I check eBay from time to time, and when I see another chubby box I will bid, but I may never see a copy with wooden posts again.

Update: In spring 2010, I visited my friend Michelle in Los Angeles. I saw one of my chubby TwixT sets in her game room. I checked; it was the one with plastic posts. They had been in the same box, and she said if she had two identical games she would have put the other in the junk room. I decided to leave her the one in the game room and find the rare wooden post version in her junk room. But I didn't find it. cry

Let's start with the fact that it's almost 25 years old, there weren't that many published, and the people who own it really like it.

It was reprinted/redeveloped by Haba as Topfgucker... but that was 17 years ago. Sigh.

And, yes, the Haba game name is - shall we say? - unfortunate.

This isn't hard to get hold of, right? And a reprint is on the way? So why's it here?

Well, at the start of this week, one appeared on eBay, with a seller local to me, who was willing to drop it off at my FLGS, and so save me postage! The auction ended on Thurdsay, so I was going to bid on Wednesday night, and monitor it from work Thursday.

I've been in hospital since Wednesday with Gallstones (they moved, no surgery required), and never got to bid. It went for about half the price I was willing to pay cry

So, it's not so much "I can hope, right?" as "The one that truly got away"...

Games, games and more games!
mbmbmbmbmb
We passed on the new version in Essen a few years ago because of the cost - it's always been one of my favourite racing games, but my husband won't play it, and paying that much for a game that only one of us would play seemed too much. Especially when one of our regular gaming friends owns a copy.

Two years on, and he agrees to let me buy it, only to find that it's out of stock. It's been ordered several times since, but never been in stock. And now a second friend has MathTraded for a copy, making it easier for me to play it if I want (and my husband isn't around), so it's looking less likely that I'll be allowed to put it on an order again!
