A couple weeks ago I did a TGIF poll asking people what contributions they valued the most. As I expected the game comments finished with a large percentage of the vote, losing only by a few percentage points to reviews. Most people admitted to finding comments more valuable than files, images, session reports, etc.

In fact, one of my most thumbed contributions was the statement in a geeklist that "The Ratings are Pointless, but the Comments are Priceless!"

Yet, despite the obvious value, people often complain because comments receive little recognition. They can't be given thumbsup or geekgold. So I figure it's time to remedy this situation. That's where this list comes in.

What I want you to do is quite simple:

1) Select one of your game comments and post it in an item on this list. Make it your comment that you think is the most informative, the most entertaining, the most useful, etc. I really don't care, just share it with us.

2) Go through this list and give thumbsup or geekgold to the comments that you like.

3) If you want, share your comments on other games in the comment section when others' post that game.

I figured I'd add an item to get things started. This was selected by random number generator:

This is a really enjoyable use of the Sorry brand name. The game is a fun dexterity game that reminds me of a table version of shuffleboard. The components are well-produced and I really appreciate the variety they offer with the target boards. It's a no-brainer to learn (and teach) as the rules are almost 100% intuitive. I also like that they have created variants and different ways to set up the boards so that players can mix things up each time they play. If you want an inexpensive dexterity game that brings variety and fun, this is the one!

I'll add, but a lot of my comments aren't very good.

Wow, this was a surprise. It's week mechanic where one person may be doing fewer turns because they are doing longer things, while another person is doing more things on a shorter time frame is very fun. Not sure the exhibits add a lot to it. Rating with only one play. May go higher.

A wonderful game that tends, unfortunately, to be overlooked because of the controversy behind it's name. It's one of those games that the rules can be explained in minutes, but you'll spend dozens of plays trying to figure out how to play it well. It has the added bonus of being enjoyable even when you're still learning.

What can I say? I don't write good reviews either.

"I enjoy Torres, especially the stacking tower pieces, so was swayed into getting Arkadia, but Arkadia is more than just Torres II. The spatial placement of the buildings, in addition to placing people, plus the strategy of timing involved in when to play your limited cash-out flags in relation to the ever-changing array of tiles, gives Arkadia added dimension. If the tents and flags were of different material, and the pieces were easier to put away in the box (if each shape of building had a spot that you could set them into and use for gameplay) I would love it just that much more."

One of my longer comments about my only rated "1" game.

Quote:
I love Star Trek, and I love Trivial Pursuit. I hate this game. Questions are good for Start Trek Trivia (and as a geek, I could actually answer most of them), but the game is just horrible.

There is no gameplay. When I played it, I thought I was missing some vital rules; then I realized those rules didn't exist, and this was a game they sold with the "Star Trek" name.

I had thought I had let my wife give it to charity (but I recently found it in the attic). I almost never get rid of my games. The only reason I am glad I still have this is because I can use the questions with a Trivial Pursuit Board. I think that says something about this game if the Trivial Pursuit mechanism is preferable to the rules of this game.

Anyone could have put together trivia questions from Star Trek, but the game is clearly broken as sold, since there is no gameplay to play with the questions.

Only buy this if you want to use the questions (If you love Star Trek) for something else besides this game.

I don't want to come off sounding completely negative, so I'll throw this one in too:

Quote:
"After immersing myself in this title just a few short times I find myself asking one simple question -- how the hell did they do that?

Simple, tight, easy to learn. The rules are damn near perfect. The phase ordering provides such tremendous opportunities to each player to affect their position . . . it just boggles the mind that there is so much nuance in such a short rule book.

This is how it's supposed to work -- this is what games are supposed to look like. Short simple rules providing vast avenues of options for players to choose from is the grail that game designers seek . . ."

Great game. Fast, simple, and very strategic. Random map setup allows for different play every time. The pieces are gorgeous, very nicely done.

I bought the game and have loved it. This was the first time I had heard of a person self producing a game himself. I have read his history of making it at least 3 times. A lot of info there. I was very impressed by his effort. Now, I see that a lot of people self produce games, but Peter Morrision did it large scale, and left pages of info on how he did it. I admired that.

The components are top notch. He made the tiles himself . (I see them, and say Wow! Very top quality.) And the pieces were produced according to his specifications. Not like the flimsy plastic Eagle game puts out, but strong stuff. The detail on them is really neat, especially the frigates. People play with them all the time while we are playing. The rules and player aids are in B+W though. You can easily print some nice aids though from BGG in color, and mount them if you have a mind to do that.

Exploration is very fun, seeing how the map turns out. We always remark on little features of the map. Peninsulas, islands, bays...

I like that you don't produce units every turn, which rewards those who sit back. In this game, there are heavy benefits to attacking. Lots of it. You get bonuses for types of troops, not troop number. All these little mechanics fit together very nicely and create a very enjoyable game.

Key points I like:
Exploration - New map every time, plus the fun of finding it out slowly.

Unit Production - Tied directly to city/villages. Each building "supports" units (no, you don't keep track of each one's "home towns").

Battles - Unit types count, not amounts. (ok, more infantry = more cannon fodder, but they don't each get to roll as in A+A).

Simple - Each unit has a few key abilities, very simply done. (Cavalry move 3, 2 dice attack, Artillery have opening shot, and Bombard, Frigates transport, bombard, move 5)

As people asked me why I rate the game a ten, I compiled what I put in the geekmails and put it in my comment.

This game is great! I have won, and I have failed to finish. I do not yet have it mastered (if that is possible). There is enough randomness to make it impossible to devise a definite winning strategy, and in a 5-player game, the situation changes significantly every turn. But, there are ways to overcome the setbacks in many cases. I think it is extremely well-designed and the artwork on the board is candy for the eyes.

(December 2006) We are now playing this with 7 players, with one modification we made. It is an excellent game for 7, and I like to play it as often as possible.

May 2009 -- This continues to be one of my favorite games.

I've always enjoyed providing detailed comments, and I also value the detailed comments of others. For almost 2 years, I've tried to provide a brief review of games in my comments with a simple x/5 star value. I appreciate others who do that and often add those people to my geekbuddies list. With that said, here's one of my comments that I liked the most.. A game that I was anxious to buy when I first heard of it, but then became disappointed after actually playing it.

Quote:
Three games played, all two player - the first was played until the end but we missed the extremely crucial initial 3-card setup. It left us with a REALLY bad taste in our mouths and wondering how on earth Rio Grande would release such a thing. We double checked the rules and realized we played without giving ourselves the initial 3 production cards in our layout, and the second game was played with that in place, making Gloria Mundi much different and quite enjoyable.

The third game was out of desire to play again, and once again my rating agrees. Holy smokes, beware of analysis paralysis and make sure you play this with experienced gamers. Definately not an introduction game. Great bits, crap packaging. Remember: The goths WILL strike, it's just a matter of when.

Update: I want to like this game. I do. But to me, playing this game is like getting punched in the stomach repeatedly. And you've just had a bowl of spaghetti. With meatballs. If you're a sadist, it's OK, but for most ---- stop punching me in the stomach.

Here's an abstract strategy game that should appeal to all the Eurogamers out there. It's got no luck, it's 100% strategy, and it's a pure match of wits between you and your opponent, forcing you to both attack and defend while reacting to your opponent's moves. Really, this game should have a weight rating of 5. The only reason I haven't given it a higher game rating is because I haven't yet figured out all the nuances of the strategy. The only method I've found that results in a consistent success rate is, if my opponent starts to approach a winning position, to throw sand in his/her eyes and run like mad. I haven't tried it in nearly 30 years, however, so I don't know if it would still work. My only other complaint would be that the "hugs and kisses" theme seems a little tac-ed on.

This is another early game that I taught my girlfriend and one that remains as one of her favorites to this day.

I went through a period where I was cool to this game. It seemed a little too random to be really interesting, and I was busy with investigating other games. Since then, my opinion of the game has improved quite a bit.

At its core Carcassonne is an investment game. It isn't about investing in stocks, or countries, or railroads but about investing in particular landscape developments. Now, these investments may not pay off. You may end up failing to get the tiles you need to get the really high dividends. You must also manage your resources (actions and meepless both) in order to take true advantage of your existing investments without ignoring emergent possibilities. You have to watch out for hostile take-overs from other individuals who have decided they liked what you have built up and want to take it over.

So now I am quite fond of it, particularly with the various expansions both big (Traders & Builder plus Inns & Cathedral) and small (The River II; King & Scout; Cults, Creativity, Siege). It will never be a Top 10 game for me, but it is a game that has earned a definite place in my collection.

Best with 2>3>Anything else

Ah, the root canal of gaming. The only thing more painful than speaking the name out loud is trying turn after turn to guess what everyone else is planning on doing. Ouch.

"Reading the other players" has got to be my least favorite game mechanic, possibly because I am so very, very bad at it. If the above doesn't say it all, my comment on Die Erben von Hoax says the rest:

At last, proof that bluffing-type games can really drive me crazy. Argh! I really do hate games that are all about lying and hoping no one can tell. Yuck!

I agree that the comments are my favorite feature of BGG. I always check game comments of my geekbuddies (using the Geekbuddy Analysis tool) when researching a game. A sure way to get yourself Geekbuddied by me is to have similar taste in games, but most importantly, to comment on them.

Anyway, this one's about the weirdest of my comments. cool

Quote:
We played this so much in college, one might have thought we were seeking degrees in it. I never really loved the game because of the long and static set-up, and because if you always play with the same players, all sessions tended to follow the same script. Still, it was a good game to pull out now and then.

But several years ago I had to stop playing Axis and Allies because before every roll of the dice, a little demon would appear on my shoulder and whisper in my ear "Our firm can assist you in these delicate situations where you must confront random fate. All you have to do is sign this form here, pledging your immortal soul to us, and we'll ensure every dice roll is in your favor."

And then a little angel would appear on the other shoulder, lean in close, and shout "CALL OUT TO JESUS, BRUTHA!"

So I'd ask the little angel dude if calling out to Jesus would guarantee a win, and he'd say "Brutha, you ain't read the book of Job, have yeh?"

I mean, what am I supposed to do then?

So now I stick to diceless Euros, where I can be the captain of my own fate and the master of my own soul.

My comments aren't all that great, but I like to keep them updated:

Quote:
A bit longer than I'd like, and maybe a bit too random (although that could be a result of my inexperience), but nevertheless a really fun little game.
UPDATE: it gets quite a bit quicker once you get used to all the cards, which makes the randomness less of an issue.
UPDATE: I'm moving this up to an 8. Maybe it's because I keep winning all the time, but that in itself tells me that it's not as random as I first thought.
UPDATE (Apr. '09): A welcome discovery! My wife really likes this one. It's definitely staying an 8 for now.

This is one of my best:

Quote:
This game took me a while to really get into. I played this game for a little while and was really disappointed with it. The game seemed too random and fickle and very luck based. On top of that, everyone said I just had to "play more" to which I say that if a game can't show how good it is from the beginning it doesn't deserve the extra plays.

Then I played San Juan, and it was everything I was looking for that Race wasn't. It was easier to understand, had more copies of the same cards so you had a better chance of getting the important cards for your strategy. I thought it was the answer.

But eventually I got tired of San Juan. It became predictable, and a little bit easy. Then I went back to Race, and I couldn't put it down. The game had suddenly turned into everything I wanted. It was more interesting and had lots of avenues to winning. On top of that, I liked the theme better and the cards were more interesting and complicated.

I had to play San Juan before I could learn to truly appreciate Race.
