I suppose there must be quite many books that have been released about board and card games. I just can't find any of them even though I'd love to read them. So please add the books that you find good, that are about board games and also if you know where to find them.

As there are almost infinite number of books about chess, go, poker etc., please exclude the books that are about one particular classic abstract game (I mean the ones that are about one particular game; a game full of rules or explanations of classic games is something I'd like to read) and also the books that are about one particular classic standard-deck-of-cards game like Bridge, Poker etc. (I am also interested in books that tell you rules for e.g. 100 games playable with a standard deck of cards though).

I'll start with a few I know about or have found in the database. Please add further books and if you know any of these books provide information about your opinion on them; also if you know where they can be found (web stores, downloadable formats etc.) please let me know.

"Originally created as a treatise on Whist published around 1742, later editions incorporated additional games. One source reports that it was the 8th edition which added sections on Quadrille, Piquet, and Backgammon; with the 11th edition adding Chess. At least 20 different versions of Hoyle's have been published over the years, making it the best-selling series of books about games in history and giving rise to the popular phrase, according to Hoyle.

The title page of an edition published around 1900 reads as follows:

"Hoyle's Games. America's Complete Hand-Book of Games, containing all the card games played in the United States, with their rules, regulations, technicalities, etc., adapted to the American mode of playing, from the text of Hoyle, and the best modern authorities. Also comprising Backgammon, Chess, Checkers, Billiards, Pool, Bagatelle, Bowls, etc., with numerous diagrams and engravings. Complete edition. Revised, corrected, and enlarged."

One confusing aspect about this book is that there is no trademark on the name Hoyle (just like there is no trademark on the name Webster's for dictionaries), so referring to a book as Hoyle's Games could refer to a number of different volumes. The popular Hoyle's Games was first published in 1907, with at least ten editions published in the twentieth century. Each edition added to, edited, and clarified what had been presented in the earlier edition."

"This book contains 38 games recommended for grades two through five, but older kids or adults could enjoy them, too. Templates for dice or spinners are included, but usually all that is needed is a few markers or coins. Variants on Nim, Magic Squares and Tic-Tac-Toe, as well as games using tangrams, pentominoes and other manipulatives. Aimed at teachers, but has nicely presented abstract strategy games as well as those involving numbers."

"This book of games is 30 pages long, and is a hardback. The dimensions are 250mm (10") by 355mm (14"). There are fifteen separate boards, including a Chess / Checkers board in the front papers and a Backgammon board in the end papers

John Astrop has written a short introduction, outlining the games he has chosen for this book and categorizing them in four groups:
Easy Race Games (for small kids)- Ludo, Fire! Fire! (Snakes and Ladders), Steeplechase and Dragon.
Harder Race Games (for older games) - Palm Tree, Shunting, Jackpot and Space Race.
Position Games (dependent on strategy alone)- Checkers, Chess, Nine Men's morris, Five Field Kono, Asalto
Wargames (strategy, imagination and luck) - Chess, Spychase, Warlord and Backgammon.

Palm Tree, Space Race, Shunting, Warlord, Spychase and Jackpot appear to be original games. The others are either classic games or re-themed roll-and-move games.

Palm Tree is a combination of Ludo and Snakes and Ladders, with a nice art deco board.

Space Race is a bigger scale version of Ludo, requiring the players to roll the right numbers to build their rockets before starting on the trip to the Green Planet. There are various squares on the way that give different results as you land on them. The only strategy comes in deciding which piece to move.

In Shunting players again roll and move, but have to pick up four trucks before returning to the start. Players have only one train each, and can only move in one direction in a turn, but can then change direction on the next direction, as if they were trains passing through points. Trains block each other, although they do not get bigger with extra trucks on.

Warlord is a capture game with a pre-Raphaelite design. Players have 4 pieces starting at castles on the corners on the board, and can move any one of these 4 in turn. Landing exactly on an enemy piece captures it, and the captured piece can then be moved back to the castle and imprisoned. Players can release captive pieces through the enchanted forest or lake. A single piece can capture more than one enemy piece, but if that pile is recaptured, all friendly pieces go free.

Spychase is similar to Scotland Yard, with no hidden movement. The spy player attempts to steal a set of plans by rolling and landing on them, then escaping to the airport or docks. The police players cannot capture the spy until he has taken the plans. At that point the police player then tries to block in the spy player so that he cannot move his full roll.

In Jackpot, the 2 players move their pieces up a fruit machine the full number rolled, but can only move a piece when the fruit under the piece moved is shown on the row of 6 fruit that the piece arrives on. If no forward moves can be made, a piece must be moved down the dice roll instead. Once all three pieces are at the final squares, a player wins."

"A general compendium of popular games with thorough, detailed descriptions and rules. Hardback and very attractive.

From the Introduction:
"The games in this book were chosen from the thousands eligible for no better reason than that they were considered by the editor and contributors to be games worth playing.

They are presented in four sections. The first section, Table Games, includes some, like Chess (in its western, Chinese and Japanese forms) and Go, which a player can study for a lifetime without exploring all the possibilities in them. Others, like some domino and dice games, while not devoid of skill, are much less demanding.
The section on Card Games also offers a range, from Bridge, with its vast literature, to, perhaps, Casino or German Whist, although even these simpler games can be played well or badly."

The other two sections are "Gambling Games" and "Physical Games"."

"Board games are flat out fun! They continue to fascinate players and collectors alike, long after their lives on toy store shelves, and their appeal is rapidly growing. Demand for games has only increased worldwide with the growth of the Internet fueling the collector market. From Monopoly to Battleship, Annie Oakley to Magilla Gorilla, this completely new book presents over 1,000 color photographs of board games, from current favorites to great classics dating back to the 1920s. It includes an informative text, vintage advertisements, and current market prices. "This 223-page hardcover full-color book is a history of the J.W. Spears & Sons company. The book was created in conjunction with a major exhibition at the Nuremberg Toy Museum that took place between November 1997 and 1998. The book remains available from the Spear Charitable Trust.

The story of Spear is a great one. The company was founded and owned by the patriarch of a Jewish family in Nuremberg in 1879; they relocated to Britain leading into WWII; and the family's fight to get their German factory back following WWII. Wow--that would make a great miniseries. The history also focuses on the game Scrabble and the city of Nuremberg. This is the most ambitious history of any game company that I'm aware of.

The portion on the games being printed in Nuremberg in the late 1700's and early 1800's is especially important. It's quite likely that no examples of some of the games described remain, and we only know of them through the catalogs and trade brochures collected and preserved by the Nuremberg Toy Museum and the Spear family.

The book includes pictures of the Spear family members, many color plates of the company's games and advertising, and pictures from the factory store."

"This book has an excellent section on lithographed games, primarily American, from the period. Lithography was still a new commercial process at the time these games were published, so the emphasis is on the art, much of it stunning. Even simple roll-and-move games are breath taking. While the book covers a variety of toys and published goods, the 55 pages of chapter 1 covers strictly games. Each game is pictured in full-color, often showing the box and the board in separate shots. The book also includes a 1-paragraph history of many of the publishers whose products are pictured.

Each game is also listed with a value, but the range on each price is huge and the prices are probably well out of date."

"The Scenario Designers Guide is a 72-page manual for creating scenarios for tactical World War II wargames. Primarily designed with players of MMP's Advanced Squad Leader in mind, it does contain material that could be of interest to people interested in designing scenarios for other World War II tactical board wargames, miniatures rules, or computer wargames.

The Designers Guide also includes 2 scenarios, both set in Java at the end of World War II. One features Japanese troops fighting Indonesian rebels; the other actually features Japanese and British troops fighting on the same side against the Indonesian rebels.

It chronicles the evolution of tabletop hobby gaming, explores why hobbyists play eurogames, how players balance the structure of competitive play with the demands of an intimate social gathering, and to what extent the social context of the game encounter shapes the playing experience."
