There are a few great monthly lists in the geek about lots of thinks. I haven't seen one about the biggest disapointment of the month or the game that was suposed to be great but in the end happened to be just ok.

A mehhh game can be a bad game or a good game. Could also be an excelent game at first but turned into a mehhh game after a while.

You should add a single game for the "Mehhh game of the month". If you have a tie for mehhh games in a single month, roll a die!

This was my Mehhh game of the month!

I was expecting a great two player game with lots of strategy and something that could really evolve players in a strong strategic battle. Well, I was very surprised when I saw a game based in the cat and mouse fight with simple expected mechanics but with too much uncontroled results.

It's not a bad game it was just something I would expect to be better.

My gaming friends told me very good things about this one and I confess I had high expectations.

PS: I usually blame my gaming friends for hyped games!

I liked the premise. Roll a die, or trade in a token according to the formulas. Buy cards with different combinations, and have as few tokens as possible left over to score maximum points.

In practice, it didn't have much spark. Maybe it needs another play, but I'm not sure it'll make it to the table again. I'd rather spend the time on something else.

I played some games that were so-so this month, but for some reason, Diamonds Club was the one game that cried MEH to me, possibly because I was expecting so much more from it. There was some significant buzz around the game after its release, and I almost bought into it enough to import a copy. I'm glad I resisted, because the game is just a little boring to me. You collect sets to collect sets to collect sets to score points, and it's probably one too many layers of abstraction there to be truly interesting to me. If I hadn't heard too much about it, I might not have been as disappointed, but that's what happened with Canal Mania, too.

I tried 16 games for the first time in August (so far) and this was the worst of the lot.

I love the concept, but the graphics on the game made it nearly impossible for me to play it. There was blue and three colors that were a little different from each other. And the shades on the cards were different than the shades of the tiles. cry Even the non-color challenged were having trouble with these colors.

I've played this a couple of times and decided I would rather just play Ra. It's not that much quicker to play either. I should probably just avoid comparing it to Ra, as only the scoring is really the same. It's not bad, just not as good as I was hoping for.

Read a lot about Arkham Horror and was excited to get the game. From what I was reading, it would fit my bill. After playing 6ish times, I find the game too long for what it is. There is no real strategy. I guess we spend time to listen to each player read his encounters. We could just skip the listening part but I find that listening to the encounters is an immersion that I need to like it. I haven't played with the expensions though they can only make the game longer. I loved Prophecy, World of Warcraft : the board game and I thought it would mean I'd love Arkham Horror. In the end, it was just mehh for me. I guess I over hyped myself!!!

I tried this a few times trying to figure out what all the fuss was about. I still hadn't found out by the time I sold it. There is little in this game to excite anyone and each game ended up the same: at some point towards the end everyone just rushed for victory point cards and the person who happened to do this best won. Pointless.

You move around on the board (randomly in my case) and pick random responses to your encounters. It doesn't matter if you are good at fighting, because if you choose to fight, you chose wrong. If you chose to help someone you chose wrong. If you encounter the palace of 100 closets or whatever, regardless of the skills you have, you will end up stuck in the final closet. I love the theme, but the game play just didn't cut it.

I played this for the first time yesterday. It looked good, but it became a "Buh" game for me (my term).

1. It plays too long. Granted, it was our first game but it took us 4 hours to play 8 turns (that was after becoming familiar with the rules, which aren't really that complicated - other than the Ikku-Ikki refresh rules!). We couldn't even finish the short game in 4 hours; I shudder to think how long the campaign game would take.

2. There is WAY too much luck in the game.
a. I had one faction that moved once in eight turns. We also had 2 turns that ended with the End Turn marker being the first chit pulled.
b. I went into battle with a superior force, but due to a couple of bad initiative die rolls, my force was virtually destroyed with no losses to my opponent. The whole initiative system just feels WRONG.

We may have fixed the problems with 2 (2a Toss the end turn chit back in and only end the turn when it is drawn a second time. 2b Change the initiative to a plus 1 instead of your opponent not being able to strike back). Number 1 is unfixable.

Does nothing wrong. Does nothing right.

Why would I want to play it? What itch does it scratch?
Will it ever feel different from game to game?

There is a little bit of a story line (What bonus tiles get triggered)
It scales okay (Fruit shortage is a bit different)

But...

I'm just doing the same blamed thing over and over.
Each game played out very similar.
I just wasn't *grabbed* or wowed at all.
And the geographic layout of the board was wasted. I hate it when a nice map goes to waste (Similar to Patricia by Schadt)

Things get off on the wrong foot right away: the characters are all generic knock-offs and not the recognizable LOTR crew you've come to expect. The board coloring is bland and you can be familiar with the layout of Middle Earth and just stare at it for a while without making progress.

Mostly a game of comparing quantities. Favors/plots/influence/cards/swords/shields/whatever. The game tosses up some straightfoward goals, and you ask yourself "how many of X do I need for this."

I just didn't see much adventure in it.

Maori was pretty bland. Not bad, certainly. Not really good either. There's a scene in an old South Park episode where Stan's grandpa tries to show Stan what it's like to be grandpa. He dims the lights, turns on some loud elevator music and locks the door. Maori was like this. Not really bad, but soothing in a way that felt like being put to sleep.

Royal Palace left me with the same impression.

We were very excited to try a game designed specifically for 3 and an empire building game at that. But with all the other options, it seemed to be a race for the largest army each turn because the armies could do more than any other piece or aspect in the game. Perhaps effective strategies would emerge with repeat plays, but the thought of playing again made all 3 of us say "meh".

In Dice Town, each player has their own set of poker dice which they roll and re-roll to build a hand. Then various rewards are dished out for most 9s/10s/Js/Qs/Ks and best poker hand. I was expecting it to be a quick filler with lots of interaction and bluffing. Unfortunately it takes an hour, there's no bluffing, and the interaction is really quite limited. It's also very repetitive. I expected more from Cathala and Maublanc, as I really love Mr. Jack. Maybe Faidutti's Western-themed poker dice game Pony Express will be closer to what I was looking for - reading the rules it seems to add bluffing and you even get to roll your dice to knock over other players' meeples!

We loved how easy it was to learn and play, but after a while it just left us feeling blah. When I wrote a review and brought this up, I was quickly poo-poo'd by playtesters who said they never had my same issue. Then I discovered they were playing with "alternate rules" that appeared in the back of the book. If a game doesn't get better till after playing with alternative rules... why would anyone play it again after playing once with the basic rules?

This is the one for me. It's a good solid game with a beautiful board, and interesting mechanics. I'll gladly play it again.

However, I'm going through a phase where euros just don't seem as interesting, and they are fading together into one amorphous mass. This is a real solid game, but it just didn't stand out as noticably unique in any particular way.

In comparision here are some games that I played for the first time that left a much stronger imprestion.

Power Grid was ok, but it was too long. I didn't realize it would be so long, and I think other games have this much strategy without taking 2+ hours. (I thought it was because of all the new players that added to the length the first time I played; but then I played several games on BSW in real time and it still took over an hour for each game - there's just so much math!) I like math-heavy games, (Kingdoms) but not when they take this long. I rated it an 8, because it's playable online, but I don't think I'll play again Ftf. (1 play FtF, 5+ online)

After Clans and Bridges of the Shangri-La, I was really looking forward to tryingh out this Colovini game. It had all the right Colovini ingredients: cool bits, secret goals (cards) and pasted-on theme.

But, for me, the game was just Mehhh. I couldn't really put my finger on the 'Mehhh'ness. Perhaps the amount of luck driven by the cards? The lack of choice around tower/building placement? Dunno. Not bad. Just mehhh.
