Everyone's played some of them. There's always more of them. What are they? Card Game Fillers!

Yea, that's right. The games you pull out while waiting. The games you play in the evening.

Those games that take the magic 20 minutes. The games everyone can learn no matter how tired they are.

What are the best of the best in this category? I've played a ton of them. Here are my picks. Fill in yours!

(Examples of non-fits:

RftG: I love it. It does not take 2 minutes to explain.
Dominion: Setup and Teardown throws this one right out the window. And heck, it's in a huge box with 500+ cards. No.
Uptown: I'd count it if I didn't call this "Card Fillers"
Bottle Imp/Poison: I was avoiding trick taking games.
Great wall of China/Citadels: Seems more than a filler to me.
Bohnanza: English edition takes too long for a filler with the expansions built in. But that's just me.

Edit: I was also avoiding pure 2-player games, but forgot to mention it. A few have been added that are darn fine games. (Battle Line, Ka-Ching, Lost Cities.) Add more if you like.

Still, these are my non-fits. Go ahead and add them if they work for you.

C'mon, it's a 2-phase auction with fascinating interaction. You're never bidding on the value of the items, merely the marginal value between the highest and the lowest. It takes people a bit to figure this out.

(If all the checks are between $5 and $7, you'd be an idiot to play your 30.)

It scales all the way down and most of the way up. 6 players gets a little silly, but 4-5 is just fine.

And it's got a great theme. Something completely missing from most of this list.

I mean, I just call it the "house flipping game" and everyone understands it almost immediately.

Another absolute classic. It's a reverse auction that's easy to play and explain.

The value of those chips sure declines as the game goes on. And who doesn't like to shoot for broke with a big chain of big numbers?

Removing 9 of the cards is just a great trick.

Give it a go!

This is the cream of the crop. The one the others should aspire for.

It's easy to explain and just takes a deck of cards.

The decisions are tough as heck. It brings to bear all the "I-Cut-You-Choose" and "Push-Your-Luck" that you can handle.

It's language neutral and the colors are textured for the color blind.

It scales down to 2 great and up to 5 reasonably well.

If you like card fillers, play this.

So many editions. So much gaming goodness.

This one walks the chaos line closely. You definitely don't have as much control as you'd like.

Still, for giving up control you get to add a ton more players. Squeeze 'em around the table and listen to the squeals.

This also brings in simultaneous play, which I really love.

So maybe the rules might take closer to 5 minutes. It makes up for that with blazing fast gameplay. No, it's not real time, but it feels like it some times.

This is the first on the list that actually rewards different "strategic" paths. Well, strategic for a 20 minute filler. What cards will you try collecting?

Who will you hate draft?

This is the first item with a great iconography system. I'm a sucker for icons

I'll give it a spot. It generally takes longer than a "filler", but it also does more than a filler.

You've got crazy team switching and someone out to make you fail.

It can be hard to explain to people, but it's worth it when you get going.

It scales amazingly. It's simultaneous play and everyone is always involved.

However, different skill levels can really mess with people here.

Hugely popular filler. The scoring can be slightly tricky at first but quick to learn, lots to decide and done in 15-20 minutes. Great introduction to gaming in general, I've found.

This one has a very different feel. It's almost calculable.

And there's great tension in trying not to dump the garbage. It's not even always possible; that's how hard that goal is.

And then there's just the polluters that are in it for the profit.

And then the oddball "-2" chits that are a blessing and a curse.

And the stressful finish on who will get to grab that "5".

Definitely a winner.

One of my forgotten favorites.

I really like:

The push your luck flip every turn.
The agonizing hand management, just what do I lay down?
The great scoring system that is simple but adds so many decisions.
(Don't bother with giving a bonus to he who ends it, that's just silly.)

If you haven't tried this one, I highly recommend it.

This ones a little rougher on rules, but still lots of fun and tension.

The person with the least money loses is just a great rule that almost keeps everyone in play the whole time.

There are some easy ways to knock yourself out of this one though, so it's not always a classic.

Still, the fixed denominations add a lot of juicy decisions too.

Yea, some people play this and dismiss it. I'd say don't. There's a lot of fun to be had here and some hard thinking to do. It's not just "Play your next highest".

And yet there is a lot of luck at times. It goes away with less players. My wife and I usually score within 2-3 points of each other in 2-player games.

And this has something the above ones miss out on, some nice directed "SCREW YOU" plays

Ka-Ching! (formerly Combit, now re-released as Trader) is a very simple set collection game. The cards are dealt into a 5 column tableau from which only the bottom card of each column is available for purchase. The object is to collect pairs of like-coloured cards whose product is as high as possible, while keeping your opponent from doing the same. Overlaying this set collection system is a tight economic game where you will occasionally be forced to cash in pairs of cards to help finance future purchases. It's a tense, highly tactical game, that still rewards forward planning. I enjoyed it more than I expected I would; in general, I'm not a fan of fillers. This is one I will buy.

Just to toss in a traditional card game or two. Cribbage, once you get the hang of it (which can take some time if you're new to it), easily fits the time slot. It's fast-moving and suitable for 2-4 players.
