Everyone's played some of them. There's always more of them. What are they? Card Game Fillers!

Yea, that's right. The games you pull out while waiting. The games you play in the evening.

Those games that take the magic 20 minutes. The games everyone can learn no matter how tired they are.

What are the best of the best in this category? I've played a ton of them. Here are my picks. Fill in yours!

(Examples of non-fits:

RftG: I love it. It does not take 2 minutes to explain.
Dominion: Setup and Teardown throws this one right out the window. And heck, it's in a huge box with 500+ cards. No.
Uptown: I'd count it if I didn't call this "Card Fillers"
Bottle Imp/Poison: I was avoiding trick taking games.
Great wall of China/Citadels: Seems more than a filler to me.
Bohnanza: English edition takes too long for a filler with the expansions built in. But that's just me.

Edit: I was also avoiding pure 2-player games, but forgot to mention it. A few have been added that are darn fine games. (Battle Line, Ka-Ching, Lost Cities.) Add more if you like.

Still, these are my non-fits. Go ahead and add them if they work for you.

A bit of a "love it or hate it" one... It's easy to explain, and usually pretty quick to play, but can be really chaotic.

Another game that popped into my head (having been that in-between game at the local con last weekend). Only 2 players though, it is a fast strategy game that makes you feel like you are 1 move away from winning the whole time.

I think this classic game fills the bill. It doesn't take that long to teach and it plays quickly. It can run longer than 20 minutes if you have a bunch of players, but it can also end very quickly with the first person eliminated wiping out another, who wipes out another...

One of the easiest games to teach, and a loud rowdy fun time.

I've never had a group not enjoy this...the more folks the better, and plays up to 8 people.

Plus it's almost "stocked" at every thrift store since it's been around since 1903.

GREAT GAME!

Quite enjoyable for a filler. This game can also go anywhere from one round to "We can fit one more round in, right?" Plays from 4-8 (I think), very easy to explain and very fun with people who are willing to jump into the theme.

Haven't tried this yet, and I'm taking liberty with the card-game definition (this is a stack of tiles that is as portable as a deck of cards), but I'm sure this one will be a great filler. Looks Coloretto-like in terms of cutting the pie up and choosing among the slices, but you also have to decide whether to go for a majority or just eat your losses (and eat humble pie!)

Battle Line has already been mentioned, but, as any Schotten-Totten fan will tell you, these games are far from the same. I'm solidly in the Schotten-Totten camp, as to me, the essence of the game is the fact that placing cards at a location locks you in to certain melds; Battle Line's tactics cards destroys that. S-T is a wonderfully pure and elegant design that's dead easy to explain, plays in 20 minutes, but still gives you all kinds of tough decisions. A classic.

A great filler, that is too often overlooked, with simple rules and yet with toughs choices to make between making a lot of profit for yourself or trying to screw the profits of your opponents! Especially true by making sure your opponent's merchandise ships get raided by pirates while docking your ship at Carthage for big VPs! arrrh

Richelieu, by Michael Schacht, is a two-player card game version of Web of Power that was originally released as a PnP. Cards are dealt into a tableau of 4 rows. On your turn, you can collect 1 or 2 cards (depending upon the number of "Shield" icons on the cards) from the ends of the rows. The object of the game is to collect majorities in various card colours (French provinces) while also collecting majorities in 3 realms of influence (military, political, and religious). The game is highly abstract and dry, but the decisions are interesting and occasionally challenging, particularly when your choice of card to collect may expose a more valuable card for your opponent.

Another Knizia game that seems to simple to work, but it does, and very well. Again, the tension is palpable as you try to win as many categories as possible without spreading yourself too thin. I've really enjoyed this with two players, but most fans seem to think it plays best with three.

Edit: Modesty prevented me from saying anything with my original post - I was simply (humbly?) putting forward a suggestion.

However, given it is an astonishingly witty and clever design (and the FIRST of what I understand will be a veritable tsunami of Dominion cash-ins), full of colour, sneaky intrigue (oops, did I say Intrigue?) and computer jokes, I will overcome my natural bashfulness to say:

BUY IT!

PLAY IT!

IT'S BLOODY GREAT!
