Everyone's played some of them. There's always more of them. What are they? Card Game Fillers!

Yea, that's right. The games you pull out while waiting. The games you play in the evening.

Those games that take the magic 20 minutes. The games everyone can learn no matter how tired they are.

What are the best of the best in this category? I've played a ton of them. Here are my picks. Fill in yours!

(Examples of non-fits:

RftG: I love it. It does not take 2 minutes to explain.
Dominion: Setup and Teardown throws this one right out the window. And heck, it's in a huge box with 500+ cards. No.
Uptown: I'd count it if I didn't call this "Card Fillers"
Bottle Imp/Poison: I was avoiding trick taking games.
Great wall of China/Citadels: Seems more than a filler to me.
Bohnanza: English edition takes too long for a filler with the expansions built in. But that's just me.

Edit: I was also avoiding pure 2-player games, but forgot to mention it. A few have been added that are darn fine games. (Battle Line, Ka-Ching, Lost Cities.) Add more if you like.

Still, these are my non-fits. Go ahead and add them if they work for you.

I recently found on BGG the game of GUBS (a self-published game). It sounded interesting so I went to the website (http://gubcards.com/) and checked it out. You can even play the game against two AI opponents by downloading a small file.

I ordered it and have enjoyed playing it as a quick filler. You can play a few games within 20 minutes.

This is a semi-plug for a game I designed recently but I am quickly becoming addicted so I thought it would be appropriate. Try it, its quite fun.

It's a fast, 2-player trick taking game where you bid cards from your hand each round in order to be the one to call trump.

Deceptively simple 2p card game that works because it doesn't claim to be more than it is. In the same vein as Xe Queo, Truc, Ghosts. Secret selection of card, each revealed simultaneously; higher card wins unless it's more than double the lower (the twist). Because there's only 11 cards in the deck and you swap cards with opponent after a round, there is surprising room for strategy. Can be played with ordinary deck. Reminds me of a combination of Mate (in Gamut of Games) and Liar!--but better than either. Quite a game for 11 cards. Enough decisions-in-head to play solitaire too.

My card game from TOG Entertainment. Food Fight!
Plays 2-4 players, teams of 2 with 4. It plays around 20 mins. and requires math skills of about an 8 yr old - adding 4 numbers together of less than 9 each; max is 8+8+8+8 you would need to know.

Not to be confused with Food Fight from cryptozoic.

Very similar to Monopoly Deal Card Game, the main difference is that in this one, the first player to reach 1 million wins, as opposed to collecting three different sets of properties.

More cut-throat and swingier that its predecessor especially as a 2-player game in the sense that money can "travel" very quickly from one player to another.

If you liked the first iteration, there's a great chance you'll enjoy this one too

IMO better that its big brother, it has a clever all-card setup and no loose bits.

Where it shines is that each ship has a unique special ability that can turn the tide (tee-hee) of a battle. Acton cards that add more abilities have been thrown in for good measure too.

While you shouldn't expect a highly strategic game, it still packs in a very decent confrontational game for such a small package. At EUR 5.99, the price is definitely right as well

Here's a game that I'm finishing the design work for right now that definitely fits the criteria for this geeklist. I just completed one of the final rounds of playtesting at the Tennessee Game Days convention and the game was well received. Lots of player deception and deduction. What makes this game standout is that players aren't assigned roles. Instead, they get to decide whether to work together or betray their fellow priests.

3-6 players | Ages: 13+ | 25 minutes

Loyalty | Deduction | Deception | Betrayal

You are a priest of a troubled Temple. A Thieves’ Guild has emerged and is challenging your Temple for influence over the land. You must decide whether to work along with your brethren in the fight against the Thieves Guild or betray your brothers and guide the Thieves’ Guild to prominence.

In Allegiance, players use cards to adjust the influence of the Thieves’ Guild and Temple. At the end of the game, the organization with the most influence emerges to prominence. Players begin with an allegiance to the Temple. However, that allegiance can shift during the game as players accrue points that align them with either the Temple or the Thieves’ Guild. All players with allegiance to the Temple win if the Temple has the most influence. One player with allegiance to the Thieves’ Guild wins if the Thieves’ Guild has the most influence.

Will the players maintain allegiance with the Temple and work cooperatively to try to achieve victory? Or will one or more of them turn rogue and align with the Thieves’ Guild in a high-risk, high-reward attempt to win it all?

Components Required to Play

- Rules, 2 pages
- 96 cards

Quest for the Open Tavern is part of 2014's 2-player game design contest. I've updated the game to playtest version 2 and assembled high quality components from Printerstudio (the cards) and Print and Play Productions (counters and cubes). I'm using a $1 crayon box from Wal-Mart to hold the games. I constructed eight sets of these high quality prototypes to send out to playtesters this month.

Seeking Blind Playtesters and Feedback/Reviews

By David Thompson (with PnP development by Keith Swingruber and art by Michael Parla)

Inspired by E. Nate Kurth

Number of Players: 2

Estimated Playtime: 15 minutes

Summary
In Quest for the Open Tavern, players engage in a competitive blind bid character placement game that embraces DIRECT player interaction. This ain’t your dad’s Euro! One player takes the role of the “Wayfarers of Devastation” — a party of Adventurers that recently slew a Great Red Wyrm (or so they claim) and want to celebrate with random acts of drunkenness and senseless vandalism. But they’ve come to the wrong town! The other player takes the role of Governor Xaggy of Hommlette — he's heard about this band of ne’er-dowells and he’s ready for them — he will stop at nothing to keep the town safe. Complicating the issue is the land is under siege from Zombies, Demons, Drunken Wizards, and a well organized Thieves’ Guild, any of which can force the Wayfarers and Governor Xaggy to become uneasy allies.
