The game itself isn't important. Spending time intellectually jousting with likeminded folks is the real reason to game.

I love undiscovered gems.

Games that didn't get that big marketing push behind them, but are incredibly exciting and enjoyable. Games that were released thirty years ago that would be incredibly popular if released today. Games that have one relatively minor flaw that obscures an otherwise incredible game.

I spent several hours digging through page after page after page of games outside the BGG 500, thinking about games I've played that fall into this category.

Here are fifty very worthwhile games that fall outside the BGG 500. If you're ever itching to try something a bit different than the same old, same old, this is the place to start. I tried to include lots of different genres and mechanics and themes on the list, so there's something for everyone.

I've left the list open for people to add more after my 50.

Beautiful game, intuitive gameplay. A forerunner of the Blokus series. Was broken, but no longer thanks to a great first-turn variant by Tom Lehmann. (http://www.hypersurf.com/~tlehmann/cathedral.html)

If someone can post Hotel Life on this list, why not Capes & Cowls? Availability is apparently not a criteria for being on this list.

Think Heroscape, but with a strictly superhero theme, where all 32 characters have their own individual powers that are each so totally gamebreaking that they all end up evening out. (Minus, imo, 4 characters that are slightly overpowered unless facing each other). Then turn down the randomness lever enough that many attacks can be resolved without a die roll at all, and so that the game feels like equal parts strategic chess match and superhero brawl.

Throw in a terrain for a customizable gameboard, a scenario book, some thugs, henchmen, robots, and an authoritarian government for fun, and you have one of my 10's.

Ameritrash meets dexterity and it's just plain fun. Choose from 4 insectoid armies with variable powers and let the tiddlywinks battle begin! Though the flipping can be unpredictable, I was surprised by how much control we could develop when launching the various units, and there are plenty of high-fives when someone makes a great shot all the way across the battlefield to take out another player's base. The differing strengths and weaknesses between the armies keeps things interesting and the game also offers a basic and an advanced version. My kids LOVE this game and we've all had a great time playing together.

This great little card game has (IMHO) been unfairly bashed here -- that is, mostly as a potentially objectionable re-theming of MILLE BORNES.

Yes, it shares many of the basics with its predecessor, but also adds more than a few new cards, rules, and open (at times, brutal) negotiation. Quite frankly, it's what MILLE BORNES should have been all along.

This has been a favorite of mine since the 80's, and has always been an excellent bridge between a party game & a cut-throat backstabbing game.

This is a hidden gem for me - what a great game! It never made the big time, I guess the subject doesn't have as much sex appeal as say, oh, a farming family for instance...but the game rocks. Lots of critical decisions and a fair amount of number crunching. If you like Power Grid chances are etc. etc.

Sadly, it's out of print these days but it's a ripper of a game. You can still play it as a Vassal module however. It's here...http://www.vassalengine.org/community/index.php?option=com_v...

I seem to be a one man fan club for this game, which is a shame because it's a cracking good game. While the gameplay is nothing like it, it's like Hoity Toity in that you have to be good at anticipating what the other players are likely to do.

The main object is to sell a limited amount of cars to limited markets around the world. If there are too many cars trying to be sold in a country, the person who spent most on advertising gets to sell first. There is no limit on how much you spend on advertising, but whatever you spend is subratcted from your profit. You move around a board based on how much profit you make. So getting the balance right between spending enough on advertising to sell your cars, and still making enough profit to move around the board is quite a challenge.

This is a cracking little auction card game where the cards you buy in one round both score you VPs and give you purchasing options for the next. There's also an element of deck-building.

Since the original poster included the monster game for the 1 year-old crowd, this game should be here for several years that follow.

This is a great game to play with children from maybe 4 to about 8. It's a memory game with well balanced decision making and luck. And it's fun.

Another Knizia dice game. This one's probably my favorite and is one of our go-to games at the end of an evening or when trying to fit a game into a tiny time slot.

A push your luck style game that creates some interesting decisions (do you keep the two fours and risk not getting worm, or take the one worm now?), and has a welcome dose of player interaction through stealing other players' tiles.

Probably my favorite game as a kid. The grandfather of Betrayal at House on the Hill's exploration mechanic, but a whole lot more fun and thematic since it involves actually searching the new room you've discovered to see if any items match your cards.

I haven't played this game in years, but I plan on rescuing my old copy from my parents' when I have kids.

I lied, just one more.

Sure, the ending is cheesy. But it's a Twilight Imperium box full of fun up to that point, so it's pretty easy to overlook. Outstanding and hilarious theme, perfectly executed. Controlling both a monster and a military branch is genius, and leads to a respectable amount of tactical depth.

Nifty little abstract game. You start by pulling 6 differently colored blocks out of the bag and lining them up on the board. Each player then draws 10 pawns (in a mix of the same 6 colors) from a pool of 30 and lines them up on their side of the board.

Each turn you play a card which will either move your pawns or move the blocks in an attempt to get your pawns lined up in the same order as the blocks.

Occasionally someone will get an especially lucky or unlucky draw, but it's typically a quick, fun game. My wife loves it.

This is a miniatures game, so I'm not sure if you want it on this list. I'll be happy to take it down if you like. It is tied with Up Front as my favorite game of all time. I have left lengthy and specific comments about Up Front in my collection, I'm not sure if I've gotten to DH there or not. What I say about Up Front applies to this game, and then some.
