Board Game Geek is latest badge I have added to my geek sash. My geekiness is too strong for any one hobby to consume all of my energies. I thought it would be fun to share the other geeky things I'm into and to hopefully see where the leisure time of others go.

Anime Geek

Anime geekdom can range, more than anything listed here so far I think, to such incredible extremes, from appreciating the style and having a few favorite shows to barely being able to function in society.

I was an anime geek in high school, and have only recently been getting back into it. My tastes are lagging behind by a few years I think (I only recently watched Azumanga Daioh and Gurren Lagann). I like how anime culture goes hand in hand with video game culture and internet culture. I even attended Otakon for the first time in 5 years!

When I was a kid, I built a model ship for my grandmother.

Her grandfather was the captain of a 4-masted schooner that sailed around Cape Horn before the Panama Canal was built.

Recently, I've built several more model ships.

I play regularly and I am die-hard tennis fan.

It all became with 1988 Wimbledon semifinal (Edberg - Mecir) which I happened to see from TV.

I have been a regular user of usenet's rec.sport.tennis for over 15 years (yes it is still alive and active) and I can say that I know A LOT about tennis (stats, history, GS winners, backgrounds, game itself) though my best knowledge is about men's Open era tennis (1968->.

And my favourite players of all time? Men: Boris Becker. Women: Martina Hingis.

There could have been a similar fan story about my Formula 1 fanhood/knowledge... though obviously I have not driven F1 car

The SC progaming scene is very active in South Korea (in fact, there are games happening right now as I'm writing this), and it is fascinating to observe how the gamers come up with innovative strategies and improve their overall play even after so many years have passed since SC first came out. Any SC fan owes it to him/herself to check out some of the video clips on Youtube.

Grill/BBQ Geek

There is nothing I like doing more than firing up one of my 3 grills (natural gas, propane and my favorite The Big Green Egg) and inviting over the friends and family on the weekend. I love bbqing ribs, chickens and brisket; but my all time favorite is smoking a whole pork shoulder for 18+ hours, pulling it apart by hand, dousing it in a home-made bbq sauce (I prefer mustard based sauces, but I can also appreciate a NC style vinegar based sauce), and piling the meat onto hamburger buns with some home-made cole slaw. My next big project will be the Thanksgiving turkey.

P.S. - I have also found that after you fill people up with delicious bbq they will be more than willing to play any game that you recommend.

Coin geek

My US coin collection reaches back 120 years, with cents complete 1956-2008, nickels complete 1954-2008, half dollars complete 1965-2002, all just from circulation.
My foreign coin collection contains coins minted by 95 different nation states, back to 1906.
I can name all seven Mints the United States has operated.
In my head, I've designed, redesigned, and tweaked my ideal coinage system.
I wish I had a coin press so I could make game tokens.
My friends all know I'm obsessed, and send their interesting finds my way.

DID YOU KNOW... the current US five-cent coin has not changed size, weight, or composition since its introduction in 1866, except for WWII, when they Mint switched from nickel to silver because nickel was more valuable for the war effort? No other coin currently minted has the same longevity.

I spend a not-necessarily healthy amount of time following the politics of the day. Polls, political ads, and punditry amuse me to no end. Election night is my Super Bowl.

It's not that I'm apathetic about the outcome. On the contrary, I'm both opinionated and outspoken. It's just that, on some level, I enjoy detaching myself and viewing politics for what it is: a game.

First of all, I hate the term "geek" when used in this context. I prefer the term "nerd". So let me say that I am an Etymology Nerd.

Everyone has a favorite ice cream, and a favorite song, and a favorite team. How many people out there have a favorite dictionary? I do. It's the American Heritage Dictionary. Webster can kiss my ass.

I love words and want to know where they come from. And I am a constant crusader to stamp out fake, "urban legend" etymologies, most of which revolve around "naughty" words and subjects. They're all just normal words, they aren't acronyms. The "F-word" does not stand for anything, it's just a normal word from Anglo-Saxon, meaning exactly what it means, or to thrust or push. The toilet was not invented by Thomas Crapper, and the bra was not invented by Otto Titsling.

I am not a geek (see previous entry). But you could say that I am also a Geometry Nerd.

I have a large collection of paper models of the external-faced stellations of the icosahedron, and many other geometric shapes I made using origami. I could almost say that I'm an origami nerd, but for me, origami was only the means an end.

I am a math nerd in general, but especially for geometry and related areas (topology, cellular automata, fractals, strange attractors, tilings, n-dimensional geometry, polyforms, etc.).

Obviously, it's closely related to my love of abstract games.

CFL Football Geek

I am a diehard fan of the three-down, 110-yard field, 20-second play clock, no fair-catch version of football. The Canadian Football League is my first love when it comes to the gridiron games.

Especially my hometown team, nearest and dearest to my heart of all sports teams anywhere, anywhen, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The coming of training camp, exhibition play, and the opening of the CFL season in June is a time of great celebration for me and mine.

Pool Geek

It doesn't really seem like something you could get geeky about but I'm the guy to do it.

In addition to captaining a team in the APA. I read an inordinate amount about the history of the sport as well as about playing the game.

I know way more cool shots than I have the talent to pull off. I spend my time practicing 3 rail kickshots that might come in useful once every 20 games (instead of the very practical skill of sinking a ball) because it's fascinating and magical that something so physically complex can be so repeatable and consistent.

I like to dig up old pool videos of the great players from history and watch guys do amazing stuff with a stick and a ball.
