Seriously though, I have been drawn in, resisted, investigated, checked reviews, links, comments and used a bit of common sense and realised that some of these games are not for our collection.

Then there are others that definitely belong in our collection - those I just need to convince my wife we need.

Finally there are those where I really don't know one way or the other, so I have gathered all the information I could find and hope to be able to make an informed decision at some point.

Our family:

Me - enjoys quick card games like Innovation, Race for the Galaxy and JAB: Realtime Boxing, more meaty games like Jet Set, Puerto Rico and Troyes or long games like Antiquity, Merchant of Venus and Yedo
Wife - enjoys Innovation, Jet Set, Glen More and Agricola
Step-son - age 14 - enjoys King of Tokyo, Saboteur and The World Cup Game
Step-daughter - age 12 - enjoys Dixit, Pickomino and Saboteur

NB: This process was previously split into 3 parts, but has now been consolidated here from Interesting games that I still need to research... and I need to convince my Wife....

Attraction: Elite inspired boardgame.

Comments: Modular board, card driven gameplay, negotiation. Build a space empire by trade or fist. Reminds me somewhat of Merchant of Venus which we enjoy immensely.

Problems with rules being outdated out of the box, though great customer service and they are working hard to provide better rules.

Unfortunately the game seems to work best at +4 player count and this kills it.

Pros: Great theme, great premise.
Cons: 2 player works with 2 ships each - and does not really work.

Attraction: Civ-lite game allowing you to join in the epic struggle between Athens and Sparta.

Comments: This looks like a great 2 player civilization game. Designed for just 2 players, this could be a huge hit in our house. Previously print and play, now picked up by Asylum Games (Board Games), very firmly on my radar and almost straight to my buy list.

I have read the rules, which leaves me less enthusiastic about the game. It might be the translation, which made for a somewhat cumbersome English, but the game mechanics too did not bowl me over.

Still, I will wait and see for more info because the genre intrigues me.

Ok, so the designer chimed in and stated it is not a wargame as such. That is enough for me to move ahead. I just showed the video to my wife and she was interested in trying it out, so we will take a chance on this.

Pros: Civ-lite game designed for 2. Playable in less than 3 hours.

Attraction: Roman name.

Comments: So, we are engineers working together to build a magnificent city and it sounds like we have been here before in some form or other.

Now, where it becomes interesting is that your workers gain experience and thus become better at whatever job they do. The downside to this is that at some point they decide to retire, which will bring you victory points at the end of the game but you also have to keep them in retirement by paying them a pension.

It sounds similar in some ways to the aging mechanism in Village and I am eager to see how it works in practice here.

So, my initial thought was ok, interesting, then came the Spielwarenmesse video and it was meh... then came the Progress: Evolution of Technology Kickstarter and a look at the Rahdo video (game available as add-on.

His enthusiasm (while always great) was over the moon, so I decided to get them both.

Attraction: Name and theme.

Comments: I was lured in by the name and fascinated by the theme and subject matter at hand. You build a civilization based on the technologies you research and accomplish. The sole focus is to move up the technology tree, from ancient times to todays modern world.

Sounds like a fun, fast-paced card game. Execution is vital as it is a card game and the length of play listed (90 minutes) does much to dampen my enthusiasm. Hopefully those fears will be put to rest once we get closer to publication.

Kickstarted based on theme and the enthusiasm of Rahdo.

Attraction: Historical setting.

Comments: A story of the promised lands, a battle between Hebrews and Heathen. Co-op and competitively, it sounds promising, though as always I am eager to learn more, especially about the 2 player aspect.

Thought the game was originally conceived as a 2 player game and turned into a 4 player game - and that does sound promising - I have decided the warfare aspect and the premise of the game itself, playing different states, is not something my wife would enjoy. Personally I was intrigued by the nation building aspect of it as I read the idea of farmers, merchants etc. though my feeling is it is more about getting what you want through warfare.

I might likely be proven wrong and aside from the videos by the designers there is very little information. Today I say no.

Tile-laying and drafting are the mechanics. The game plays differently everytime and in under an hour. The theme and mechanics makes me interested.

I have been following the game on the sidelines for a while and while interested it does not get me overly excited. My feeling is that we have similar games that scratch the same itch - cube playing, tile-laying games. Perhaps in time with a lower price point or in a trade.

Comments: Help build the city of Québec into a thriving place, taking care of gaining influence with relevant authorities and within the spheres of religion, commerce, politics and culture.

Yet another Worker placement game... or something else entirely.

Reading the rules, I will go with something else. Incorporates worker placement (in the form of architects and workers contributing to various buildings over the 4 centuries from 1608 to 2008. Adds a area influence aspect coupled with area control and a neat number of features.

Downside is the rules states 2 player games should not be attempted before a few 3-5 player games have been played. NOT good news for those of us going in with the 2 player only game in mind. Also, the way the neutral architect works in the 2P game is confusing to me.

The designer has chimed in with a few comments and it certainly sheds some light on the 2 player game. It sounds intriguing, but also makes it a little difficult to form an opinion based on the rules. I will wait for the first session reports and reviews to come in.

Finally, the board (as shown in the rules) with all the buldings look very disturbing to my mind - a jumble of mixed colours.

I have decided to give this game a miss. People compare it with a game like El Grande, which for me is a point against it. Furthermore, I am getting the feeling the game is abstract, despite attempts to make it very thematic. The whole scoring aspect is not my strong suit. So, with a high entry cost and plenty other games to be excited about I will pass.

Pros: Theme.

Attraction: 18xx game for 2!

Comments: I want to explore the 18xx family of games, but being limited to 2 players makes this very hard, perhaps this is the place to start?

Comments would suggest that it is only 1/3 18xx, in which case we might as well start with the family proper.

Pros: 2 player 18xx.
Cons:

Rules: Revised (Direct Link)

Verdict: thumbsdown - we might as well begin with 18xx proper!

Attraction: Railways of the World with cards!

Comments: Railways game in half the time. It seems to do a decent job of translating the RotW game into a card version, with inherent limitations.

Pros: Railways game.
Cons: Too simplistic, RotW game did not really work for us.

Verdict: thumbsdown - just a feeling it will not work for us.

Attraction: Thematic setting.

Comments: An interesting and somewhat novel take on card/ hand management. Actions are created by combining a worker in play with cards from your hand.

Your goal is to attract workers to help build a support system that will give you mastery of one of the 4 classes in the game. Mastery is achieved by building a pyramid of workers, two workers support one, building ever up.

There are different ways to acquire workers - merhcants hire them, knights compete for them, bakers offer food in exchange and scholars educate them.

Read the rules and very simple they seem, though I am not saying the game is simple. I think I expected different. The game seems abstract.

Pros: Theme.
Cons: Abstracted theme.

Attraction: Western Theme.

Comments: A new implementation of a highly rated 2 player print and play game. Thematically set in the Wild West and promises to deliver plenty of 2 player goodness.

I read the excellent designer diary and was entertained, it gives a great insight into the development of the game. Then I read the rules and was less thrilled with the game. It seems to be "only" a series of confrontations determined by playing ards. Now I am sure there is a lot more to it than that, but based on the rules alone I would give this game a miss as something not quite up our alley.

Perhaps reviews/ session reports will change that.

Ran the idea by my wife as a teaser and she was not interested. Coupled with my own misgivings about the concept working for us I will give it a miss. That said, hopefully more to come, as strictly 2 player games are always welcome.

Pros: 2 player goodness!
Cons: Theme.

Hot: Catan Card Game
Not:

Attraction: Re-implementation of a favourite game.

Comments: Medieval theme turned into various eras. Less cards, shorter playtime - still fun?

We have practically given up on the original, which is due to the play time - it takes us about 2½ hours to complete a game - so this could be a great alternative. Then again, despite the great price, I am not really tempted.

Pros: Shorter playtime.
Cons: Worth the price of admission when you own the original?

Comments: Have you ever dreamt of playing a medieval pardoner... perhaps not, but the premise sounds intriguing and as a medieval history buff this sounds like something for me.

The rules are available now. It is an interesting project with a very different theme. I am still thinking about the game, which is a positive, but I am not sure if this is something that will actually play well - for us at least.

Pros: Theme.

Comments: European monarchs struggle to lead their nations on the road to enlightenment in a battle of arms and ideas. The game is currently on kickstarter and comes with the full game (3-7 players) and the pocket version - a short 30 minute card game using a central part of the full game - playable for 2-4 players.

The designer has committed to creating full 2 player rules for the game at some point this year.
