Although the applause was tepid, I was glad to see Space Hulk get recognized. I think the BGG.con crowd tends to be much more Euro-phile than the BGG general populace. This win was a bit of a surprise to me, but a pleasant one.

Its a well done game. Lots of attention went into this one. It certainly deserves it. Like the Oscars that finally went to Peter Jacksons' Return of the King you have to acknowledge it.

Space Hulk is an old favourite of mine (I have the first edition), but I think this shows not only the type of gamers that actually took the time to vote this year, but also how weak the overall 2 player category really was (that a remake out-did all the new 2 player games out there).

To be fair, the rules changes are all significant improvements on an already very solid previous iteration. I'm not sure what was more deserving.

I guess it's the difference between families of boardgame geeks and the other 99.9% of families out there. If BGG is going to brand their own award (and maybe even some day, put little stickers on games in stores that manufactures pay good money for the opportunity to do), then a "family" game should be one that is suitable for...yes, the 99.9% of families out there who are not boardgamegeeks. The "gamers game" is already the geeky game.

I sympathize but disagree. My 9 yr old son loves this game, we've played it with my father-in-law and I've introduced it to friends and their kids to great success. I think a BGG award for a family game should mean: a game that gamers would enjoy and could play with their kids, in-laws, etc.

There's a lot of blur available between Gateway, Children's, Family, etc. If this is solely supposed to be purely a gateway category, then Pandemic might be a stretch. But I think your anger is better placed toward some of the other nominees. (I'm looking at you Dominion and Stone Age.) I thought Family D and Pandemic were perfectly reasonable nominees and Pandemic a deserving winner.

I love Pandemic, however I think it winning the family category reflects that a lot of voters (who may or may not be fans of Pandemic) knew Dominion would likely take out the Best Game category, so threw the family vote to another game that (in many eyes) deserved to get an award.

Pandemic is one of the easiest games for me to get to the table with my family. My children (7, 9, and 14) all find it amusing. Now while it seems firmly in "Family Game" territory to me, I can understand that other families might not find it quite so entertaining or compelling. ...

My 9 year old and 7 year old sons and my wife also enjoy this game (as do my parents). The 5 year old and 1 year old sons are yet to fully appreciate it though ...

In fact, I was reading the 7 year old's school work the other night and he had written about playing a game of Pandemic in his schoolwork!

In terms of their release dates, I don't understand how "Pandemic", released back in the first quarter of 2008, won Best Family Game of 2009, while its just-recently-released expansion, "Pandemic: On The Brink", won Best Expansion of 2009.

What specific window of time was used to determine whether a game's release date fell within the window of eligibility to be considered for nomination for this year's Golden Geek Awards?

Based on the example of the release dates of "Pandemic" and "Pandemic: On The Brink" above, that window of eligibility seems to be at least a year and a half long.

I love Pandemic, but I was surprised as well to see it as a nominee this year, just due to the timing of release.

It was really cool, the games that won where someone was present to accept the medal. Maybe in the future more game designers will be invited to be present for their presentations.

By the same token, wouldn't this year's "Small World" (released in the first quarter of 2009) be eligible then to be nominated for the 2010 Golden Geek Awards for Best Family Game?

Nevermind 2010 Family Game... by the criteria used by the Golden Geek Awards, Small World stands a good chance of winning the 2018 War Game award.
