Well GW does it again. They seem bound and determined to annoy every customer they have ever had.

In the spirit in which GW does things here is a list of games to spend your money on and play other than GW ones.

Please add your own recommendations.

Cheers

I've never played this one but I have looked at the boxes and minis in the shops. Rather than playing Warhammer 40K you can give this one a try. There is also the bonus that the minis are already painted and that will have you hours of time.

Space Hulk ripoff from the early '90s. Way out of print and hard to find. Contains about a pound of metal minis (2.2 kg for metric people). I found my copy for $19.99 at a FLGS a couple of years ago.

For me this is the second game I would go to before Battlefleet Gothic. You also get to fight battles in three dimensions and the included box minis are really quite nice.

Also an advanced degree in starship engineering is not required.

If you think you've gotta play "Talisperson" (name changed to Politically-Correct nominclature, and to protect me from a law suit by GW), try this game instead! It's just like "Talisperson", but a little better.

Designed by that guy that did Galaxy Trucker, Through the Ages, Dungeon Lords, and Space Alert, there's the added bonus that it's published by Z-Man Games, which doesn't seem to be an evil entity like GW.

This game, sometimes called "Ogallala", and reimplemented in a science-fiction setting as Starships, is what GW used as a basis for ripped off for their Chaos Marauders.

I was going to try to get a copy of the old GW version of Chaos Marauders. But then the new version came out and I was kinda considering that... well no more! Now I'll be trying to find either Up The Creek, or Starships. Or maybe I'll just do a one-time pirated version of the old Chaos Marauders for my own use... just to thumb my nose at GW.

Infinity is a wonderful skirmish-level wargame. It is on the same general scale as Necromunda or Mordheim: City of the Damned, but there is considerably more variety and many more tactical options available to you.

The miniatures are also among the best currently available from any company.

This is not the first time and it won't be the last time GWs policies drive customers to drop them. I often see people saying all they will buy from GW in future is paint and I never undestood it.

I use Vallejo paint and it is excellent stuff. I don't know how many colours there are but there's a lot (one site says 308 colours).

There's an excellent chance you can buy this nearby and you can certainly mail order it.
Vallejo Paints on Google.

"Green Stuff" is also not some magical material you can get only from GW, It's basically an epoxy putty called Milliput. Some people say Green Stuff is a lot better, personally the primary difference I notice is the extreme price hike with the GW product.
Google Milliput

I'm sure all your modelling needs from craft knives to flock can be obtained pretty easily and for a lot less money other places if you choose to look.

Though OOP, this game has far better rules, and a line of miniatures that have a very distinct and original look. Alternating unit activation, well balanced factions, elegant mechanics and lack of "superhero" leaders make this game a winner.

Prince August in Ireland has quite a few of the miniature line left in stock, and even with high shipping costs from Ireland, the prices are still about half of what you would pay for a similar sized GW army. E-Bay is another good source for official figures for this game. And, you can always proxy from the ever growing line of sci-fi figures from a variety of manufacturers.

So, stick it to the Evil Empire! Power to the people and all that.

This is from the same company as Full Thrust, and is an army level table-top miniatures war game at the 6mm scale (although it's flexible enough to do other scales). An excellent game, arguably better than the OOP and poorly supported Warhammer Epic 40k/Space Marine line, which it is most comparable too.

The game has an implied background, but like its cousins from GZG, this can be easily ignored, and the system is designed to work with miniatures from any company.

A fast-paced spaceship miniatures tabletop game that blows Battlefleet Gothic out of the stars. The game is technically OOP, but all the books and miniatures are still available from both the publisher, DP9, and all over internet. Definitely has a bit of an Anime feel, and is based on the Jovian Chronicles universe.

The game can also be played with the counters included in the main game and its supplements.

Another game from DP9 based on their Heavy Gear universe, a hard sci-fi, anime-inspired setting. The rules are light-years beyond anything GW has ever produced, and it handles everything from small skirmishes to fairly large battles with equal ability. Easy to learn, but still allows for very deep and tactical play.

This version of the game is an updated and tweaked version of their Heavy Gear Tactical rules, and while it doesn't mesh as well with the RPG (Heavy Gear Tactical was fairly seamlessly integrated), it is a much better tabletop miniatures wargame.
