In these days of anger and hatred targeted at the mega corp known as Games Workshop, I thought it might be a good time to go back in time. Back to a time when Games Workshop actually made games.

With the exception of the recent limited edition remake of Space Hulk it's been a long time since Games Workshop made games rather than game systems.

I'm sure many users don't even remember the time before Games Workshops games systems. You go into a Games Workshop shop buy a rules book, go back latter for some figures then some more, than some paint, then some terrain etc etc and you finally realise how much you have spent on one game and wish you had taken up a nice cheap hobby like playing Magic the Gathering.

I even remember when Games Workshop sold other peoples games. I bought my copy of Avalon Hill's Dune from the very first Games Workshop shop in Hammersmith. In fact I used to buy most of my games there.

I'm going to list the Games Workshop games I had and enjoyed with a few comments. Feel free to add your own as we travel back to a much happier time for Games Workshop.

I've had this game since it first came out. I have never been able to get it to the table (except for once right after I bought it). I've thought about selling it or trading it away, but I have to hang on to it. Maybe someday, it'll become a regular at my game sessions!

edit: Oops! Missed entry #12! blush

A true classic.

Some strategy, but mostly flavor......and that makes for a perfect filler.

A few of the cards are still used in our little gaming group. Occasional comments about "Dwarf on a stick" or you Sneaky Git bring up memories of one of the best of GW's card games.

We still laugh when we think about this game. Shouting out "Chaos Marauder" first when the card appeared was a drunken hoot.

This was my favourate GW game, just the shear scale of the battles you could play was awesome.

Have to confess, I hated Warhammer Epic 40,000. It simplified away everything that made Space Marine so cool.

Yes, this really is what I looked like when I uploaded that avatar. Not that it's quite current anymore.

SM was awesome. 3-5 piece units, small scale, and you could get REALLY big battles. However, there was a name inconsistency... it was set in M31, not M41, so should have been Warhammer Epic 30,000....

With it's multiple regiments of space marines per chapter (Regiment=10 companies! 100 Squads! + vehicles!) and its small scale (2ea 3/4" x 3/4" bases for a squad was awesome!) I got two, just for the troops and scenery.

Play, however, was only very good, not great... But it could be played on a typical small kitchen table.

(originally on the wrong edition...)

Don't forget this one - a superior Risk variant in which the die wasn't rolled for combat but you had to guess the number the opponent chose (which was number of troops attaking and that would advance in if successful). The addition of the nukes added a further twist!

In the late 80s and early 90s, a my friends and I played this game of chaotic war between futuristic apartment blocks set in the Judge Dredd milieu. The Mega Mania expansion made it a workable multiplayer game for up to 4 players.

It had loud artwork (like its source material) and was prone to crazy, random outcomes, but it was a lot of fun back in the day.

My favourite unit was the Futzies, who frequently changed loyalty and often got killed trying to put out a car park fire they started the turn earlier!

It wasn't the greatest game in the world, but it was one of the few I managed to get my wife to play with me - solely on the basis of the theme. Also the reason why we called my infant son's plastic toddler keys "The Keys of Time".

Great list!

I agree with the intent here. Tell GW What we Like along with what we Don't Like.

Thanks for the list and memories. I still want to try out Space Crusade and I need to put my copy of HeroQuest to work. I wonder if it's safe to bring it to my local meetup... ^_^

(for the record) I deleted my first comment because it didn't add positively to the conversation.

Great list idea. HQuest was sold under a different company in Germany, back in the day... Was fun nonetheless.
On a different note, if you had fan material removed, here are some items that might be of interest to you, although the two "stamped out" and "kicked out" microbadges were (in concordance with my own view, actually, but it was still fun making them) judged too controversive). Here you can at least see them, even though you won't be able to get them anywhere.

Games Workshop has sent a follow-up to their original C&D letter. They now ban the use of their name at all. They prefer to be called the "Company Formerly Known as Games Workshop". This can't be written out, but will be represented by the symbol sauron

Bit of name confusion - have to be careful not to confuse them with Game Designers Workshop (GDW).
