I enjoy reviewing my plays each year to see how they change and evolve over time. I don't necessarily push myself toward any goals, but rather just try to enjoy playing as many games as possible.

I tend to play games in a few different contexts. I play at home with my wife and children, once or twice a week with my local game group, intermittently at work (I am a high school teacher) and as often as I can with other family members and friends.

Of course, light and fast games are more prevalent on lists like these, but I definitely like silly games anyway.

In total, there are around 1650 plays of 395 different titles. It's been a great year!

Comments welcome.

On a group vacation that we take with some of our friends we played this up to 10 times in a row - people wanted to play it over and over. In two different situations this year, after my wife and I had already played too many times, we left to go to bed and our other two opponents continued playing alone. What a great game. I don't have any games rated as a 10, but I should probably make this one a 10.

Unfortunately, not everyone in my game group appreciates the game, though my wife, my family and many friends to who I've taught the game have loved it. I've started to burn out, and have definitely not given Intrigue and Seaside the attention they deserve. But I'll still play whenever.

All but a couple of these are online. In my opinion, Brass is the perfect PBW game - very few turns, each of which could potentially be lengthy. I don't do very well, but mainly because I never pay attention to what my opponents are doing, but I have learned to appreciate the different potential strategies.

I mainly play this with my kids (at left), my son calls this "the car game". This is by far his favorite game, and we started out with me helping him flick his wrist to hit the disc down the track with his hand. These days he has somehow figured out how to flick in a really weird way that works fairly well and he can beat me about 50% of the time. We usually use some combination of the first 4 expansions.

It would be silly to purchase this game - we play with cards from different Las Vegas casinos. Every game is different and this is really the most physical and intense speed game there is. The trash talk, the joy at slapping your card down just milliseconds before someone else, the sense of accomplishment when you call "nertz", there's so much to love about this game.

I can see how many would hate it, and I would say that there's a steep learning curve, making it difficult for new players. But once this year my wife and I taught it to a couple and they ended up beating us, which felt great. But we also taught it to another family and they decided to stop playing midway into the first round, so...

Finito will surely not see nearly as many plays next year. My wife really likes the game, but I have lost interest. I really like all these simultaneous play games (as Take It Easy and Würfel Bingo both show up on this list, and I also enjoy Cities and Mosaix), but this one really is completely solitaire, as the variable starting positions make most of the decision making afterward completely arbitrary and the wins very hollow. When someone wins my general reaction is, "Huh, I was one roll away from winning myself". With the other games, winning feels like an achievement, since everyone had the same tools to build with, but here it just feels random.

This is really the best version of the game out there, with a great assortment of roles. I'm not a big fan of the artwork, but that's a small tradeoff for the amount of potential fun. I've played in different settings, from high school and college students to middle age couples, and once people figure out the game there are few experiences that are more fun. With people that know the game well there can be some hilarious moments, and the feeling of winning a hard fought game as a villager is exhilarating.

I have played a couple games in the BGG forum, and I've found that the attention to detail is completely different there, and the post volume is too much for me to keep up with while at work. I have a great admiration for the players there, as I know that I could probably never be as good as they are.

My wonderful wife, even though her initial reaction was negative, has made a concerted effort to give the game a fair shake, knowing that it's one of my favorites.

Whenever I play this game I have to tell the other players this story.

The first time I played the game, it was so easy, all the players easily placed all of their penguins and it all came down to which player got to start first, there was no challenge.

Then later I was going through the game and I realized that it shipped with a cardboard piece between the iceberg and the pole it stands on that keeps the iceberg in place (presumably to protect it during shipment). When you remove it the iceberg swivels and tilts all over the place, thus providing all of the fun in the game.

I don't know if I've ever felt so stupid as when I figured that out. Though luckily I think I was alone when it happened.

I discovered Tohuwabohu really late, but was able to get a copy from Le Valet d'Coeur (I think they still have some), and everyone has enjoyed playing it. What really sets it apart from other speed/pattern recognition games, is that you are always at risk of losing the tiles which you have already claimed. This introduces an extra bit of paranoia, knowing that people are trying to steal your tiles.

You can play this with the flip side, which is just black, or even with the cardboard frames the tiles get punched out of, but I've found that it increases the difficulty to a level that is not very fun (for me, anyway).

Tohuwabohu is easily my favorite Michael Schacht game.

Another impressive entry in the Keltis world, though after about 10 plays we began to figure out that since you can't hold any tiles in your hand, the game ends up coming down to pure luck. It's still fun though to take tiles you know someone else needs just to deprive them of the opportunity. We routinely have players start their column at 5 or 6, which would be unheard of in the regular game.

I'm not one to play print and play games, but I took a chance on this one and it has been a lot of fun. This really fills a nice niche when you don't have quite enough players for Werewolf, and on the plus side everyone is involved for the entire game. I haven't played with the new rules yet, but the old ones still work very well, though it may be more difficult for the Resistance to win.

Most of my plays are with my French class, where it's even more fun to be part of "la résistance".

The art on the cards is in some cases really funny, and it's caught on like wildfire among the students at my school. Even if they don't read French you can still have a good time without the special powers on the ball cards.

I can see how some would refuse to pay for what is essentially a public domain game, but I think it is worth it here, and the cards make it easier to keep track of everyone's signs, especially when you consider that many players will have multiple signs by the time the game is over.
