What a long, strange trip. I've pretty much been a gamer all my life, but when miar introduced me to BGG in the late summer of 2007, I knew I'd found one of those few www sites I'd stick around on (BUST.com is the most notable other, while fadsites like Myspace & FaceCrack have come & gone).

Today I rated my 200th game. I stick to the BGG ratings guidelines, which are based on how much I want to play something:

Quote:
* 10 - Outstanding. Always want to play and expect this will never change.
* 9 - Excellent game. Always want to play it.
* 8 - Very good game. I like to play. Probably I'll suggest it and will never turn down a game.
* 7 - Good game, usually willing to play.
* 6 - Ok game, some fun or challenge at least, will play sporadically if in the right mood.
* 5 - Average game, slightly boring, take it or leave it.
* 4 - Not so good, it doesn't get me but could be talked into it on occasion.
* 3 - Likely won't play this again although could be convinced. Bad.
* 2 - Extremely annoying game, won't play this ever again.
* 1 - Defies description of a game. You won't catch me dead playing this. Clearly broken.

I further understand this to mean within a context of all other games being available at that moment. So to me, a 10 is the game that, even if all my 9s are available, I'll probably play first. I feel 10 and 1 are the most important--and most overused--ratings. To me a 1 simply cannot be considered a game, based on our common understanding of what that word means. As a result, I have no 1s.

Here then are the 200 games I've rated, from worst to best. Please feel free to add your thoughts, or to tell me I'm full of shit.

Wow. This one's really fascinating: maybe the most singular abstract I've seen in a long time.
We used 2 sets of checkers and a (ha,ha) chequered gingham tablecloth with a thread marking the edge of the play area (in the end, that wasn't a good idea--too busy). We played 3 games the first night, and two a couple of days later. Calculus really challenged our conceptions of how to well, game. Very nice job, Gord!

I give this a low rating only because I follow the BGG rankings strictly. This is a *great* game with close friends: the razzing, the arguing, the "oh, yeah, well what about the time...." all make for one of my favourite party-like game experiences.

But I don't live near any of my closest friends anymore.

Akin to its Asian cousin, this is a workable entry in the 10 Days series. Not quite up to the gameplay level of the African edition, and the tile holders in particular are poor and prone to warping.

I nevertheless admit Kalinin Oblast--as one of the omitted entities--confounded me.

The base game is the most portable I own. It's not a fantastic game itself, though. I recommend picking up several (cheap!) sets and playing some of the great games in the Icehouse wiki. That said, it gets a vote from me as one of the best gateway games. Shenomad and I play it in airports & airplanes, and people always stop to watch, and usually inquire. We hand them the tube, and when they hear it costs six bucks, they usually write down the Looney Labs www address.

An almost endless selection of decisions. A descendant of Goa and Puerto Rico, but with much more variety: because the players hold their own cards to use (or not), the communal board actually looks different to each of them, as it has to be weighed against their hands.

Not sure I'd want to play it very often, but pretty sure I'll enjoy most of my games.

Admirable design by Rosenberg. Even crushing defeats left me wanting to play again, if only to do better.

Lots of fun trying to manoeuvre both your own horses and those you've bet upon. Long Shot does a very good job of re-creating the boisterous atmosphere of a track. We played with 5P, but I imagine with 8P it would be a truly raucous affair. The cards provide opportunities to create clever, game-changing gambits if played at the right moment--especially with the one-time-only re-roll token thrown in. Another winner from Z-Man.
