The Complete Age of Sail Wargame - but better done nowadays by a good computer game, like, er, Age of Sail (2). I owned this, but the rules are a little old now - there are probably some better systems, but none as complete.

Got newer PC recently. Can finally play Age of Sail 2. It rekindled my interest in WS&IM which was a major game for my old group back in the 70s and 80s. It would be tough to improve on it but I'd consider suggestions.

My first wargame, the original copy of which was literally worn out.

When I worked on "tall ships" (late 70's-80's) we set up scenareos with the boats we knew in battles - Gazela Primero vs Victory Chimes, etc.

Still have a copy.

Just have to provide a little info to the guy below re- the "Macgowan coloring book art" comment regarding WS&IM's cover. The cover is a repro of a famous 1898 painting titled "The First Salute" by Edward Moran depicting John Paul Jones's Sloop USS Ranger receiving the First Salute to the new US flag By the French Fleet In Quiberon Bay, February 14th 1778. Certainly classier than that jumbled up Euro-cluster fleet action painting on Close Action's cover yuk IMHO.

I purchased this recently but have not had a chance to play it yet. I would like to see some comments on this game. How does it compare to WS&IM? It looks to be a little more complicated than WS&IM. Does that added complexity add anything to the game or does it just add clutter and detract from playability? Inquiring minds want to know...

Far more realistic, somewhat more complicated and slower. Depending on your taste (and period knowledge) you'll either feel the extra effort isn't worth ot or you'll never play WS&IM again. (I fall in the latter group).

Close Action was designed after the designer won a WS&IM tournement using ahistorical tactics. He felt that the game could be done better. You see a lot of WS&IM in Close Action.

This is really more of a miniatures game than a board game. Ships are based on 3" octagons that also act as movement templates.

Photos of the game in action (using Pirates of the Spanish Main ships!) are here: http://www.wfhgs.com/friday.html

This is ok, but I believe that WSIM is better. I have played Frigate many times and find that it is quite easy to play and is a little bit like a brother to Dreadnought: Obviously you've got wind direction etc aswell.

It's quite a good game for solo-play. You can do the Battle of the Nile, for instance.

I agree with the Admiral. Face to face WS&IM is much better. Dr. Chuck, my main gamer in the 70s and 80s was an SPI fan and he agreed that the AH treatment was far superior. IIRC, it seems the ships in Frigate could move much further in a turn thus negating the feel for the subject and era.

I haven't got this, but it looks like it may be similar to Naval War. Is that correct? I know NW is WW2 and this is a Sail list - but the comparison is interesting.

Also, now we have Naval Battles out. Is that just a reprint of Naval War?

Enemy In Sight is almost identical to Naval War with a couple of card/rules twists like a Break The Line card. Other than cool two sided ship cards showing damaged/undamaged ships it wasn't much of an improvement in my opinion.

I had Modern Naval Battles when my sons were just a little too young to grasp the subtleties of it. The new Phalanx game appears to be MNB in a WW II setting.

This game isn't all bad. For example, with a little work, you can turn the ship pieces into salt and pepper shakers!

Also, the box is quite flammable, and makes a great starter log! Handy in cold climes!

Looked at the rules.

'In Chains!’ Do they mean "In Irons?"

It makes me think of Motel Art - bad paintings of things the painters know nothing about so all the details are just wrong.

The high solitaire suitability was what caught my eye and may retrieve this one from the ignore list.
