Happy New Year, Geeks!

I'm curious. What game basically fired/pink slipped another game for you?

I.E. You enjoyed Candyland and played it a lot but when you got Chutes and Ladders, CL was tossed out the door.

How could this happen? Well, the above example isn't that great but maybe you learned a new game that was similar in mechanics but better than the game you were playing. So, you tossed the older one out!

I'm going to list the game that did the firing and mention which game was fired in the body of the text.

Nice work, Simon!

6/6/11 WOW, this GL has been a ton of fun b/c of all those that have contributed thoughts. Nice going! There was a suggestion to edit the list alphabetically. I thought it a great idea at this point for searching, etc. So, done.

1/5/10 1:30pm EST EDIT: I think this geeklist is going to get me FIRED...

Fired 1812: The Invasion of Canada.

1812 is fun, but 1775 is just completely wild. Battles from turn one, command decisions are much more powerful, and better balanced overall. Every move requires extremely careful planning, lest you leave your position exposed.

So far I've seen a 6-5 British win (it would have been a bigger margin, but there was no need to move the last British faction) and a 10-3 American win (and the US was down 6-1 at the end of Turn 1!).

Really, the only flaw in 1775 (base game) is that the area in RI, CT, MA, and NH are basically 80% of the action. Have not tried Siege of Quebec scenario yet.

1825 Unit 2 fired 1825 Unit 3, for a short 2-player 18xx.

The map seems more coherent, and more dense. Also, the default track pool works better- upgrades/scarcities don't feel as artificial. The railroads seem more playable, too.

More of a historical note. 1830 significantly reduced the amount of time required for an 18xx game. It relegated the 1829 branch to the once in a while when we have all day play.

Fired Twilight Struggle.

I know I'm in the minority, here- and, probably for good reason.

But- it's a measure of how important non war-game themes are, for some gaming partners (eg, my wife).

And also- a measure of how exciting Richard Nixon remains- holding his own, against Camelot.

I can't get Twilight Struggle to the table- but we'll play this, occasionally.

Clue and all variants

I always enjoyed Clue for its basic premise of being a nice whodunnit game but found the game to be too generic and rely too much on simple dice rolling and collecting clues, being more of a race game than anything else.

Despite t edious mechanics, 221B's "case" system adds more depth to the deduction/mystery genre and we ditched Clue for it.

Fired Settlers of Cataan

and Puerto Rico

Settlers was fun for a while, but too often left people trapped from early on in the game. This made it hard to keep new players interested.

Puerto Rico was great... for a while. It started to feel too static. We needed more variety.

7 Wonders plays very differently each time depending on what city you draw. The expansions open up new vistas of gameplay without making the rules overly complicated.

Monopoly

Of course, Monopoly is not that hard to fire in my opinion, in fact most modern boardgames fire it. I played Acquire for the first time this last month, and really enjoyed it. First off, i don't have to roll a stupid die to see where I'm supposed to go! There is so much more depth and decision making just in where to put your tiles alone. Man, the subtlety is amazing, for such a simple game. Not to mention the decisions whether or not to buy stock in which company, whether to sell your stock or keep it after acquistion, should I expand this company or acquire it...etc.

Of course if you like negotiation and trading, Acquire doesn't quite have that, but I'm sure a house rule could be made to allow you trade with someone instead of buy stock after you've placed your tile.

Both are games where you more or less play independently on your own board but draw from a common resource pool.

However, I find Agricola's theme to be better and mechanics more fun, and the components (even pre-upgraded animeeples) more fun to play with. That said, I do not care for Farmer's of the Moor.

The only time Puerto Rico has hit the table since was the week before I introduced Twilight Imperium 3 in a clever bid to make the rules next week a little smaller.
