Happy New Year, Geeks!

I'm curious. What game basically fired/pink slipped another game for you?

I.E. You enjoyed Candyland and played it a lot but when you got Chutes and Ladders, CL was tossed out the door.

How could this happen? Well, the above example isn't that great but maybe you learned a new game that was similar in mechanics but better than the game you were playing. So, you tossed the older one out!

I'm going to list the game that did the firing and mention which game was fired in the body of the text.

1/5/10 1:30pm EST EDIT: I think this geeklist is going to get me FIRED...

Fired...

Bless it, Uno was an old family standby. But it got to the point where playing was simply mechanical, and any joy we got was from random luck of the draw.

Then No Thanks! came along, and completely blew Uno out of the water. Such a better filler game! Easy to teach AND has some interesting strategy.

Rise of Empires

I consider myself a Wallace fan and actually enjoyed Rise of Empires more than Through the Ages (Heresy, I know.). But ultimately I could not get over how unimportant most of the tiles were and felt that in the end I'd pretty much just played a convoluted, overlong version of El Grande.

Olympos takes the tile selection part of Rise of Empires, cleans it up, and makes the spatial part of the game servile to it. You're on the board to get resources which in turn get you the "discovery" tiles, which in turn get you points. It does quite admirably as a civ-lite game and plays in just 90 minutes. (A 3-player game yesterday was only an hour!)

Instead of Rise of Empires, you could play both Olympos and El Grande and still have enough time for a quick filler!

Fired all those find-the-traitor games.

Now before the poo-flinging begins, let me add some caveats:

1. I'm not talking about all games that have a traitor mechanic as part of the game. Rather I mean those games where finding/avoiding/thwarting the traitor is the whole game.

2. I'm really not a fan of these kinds of games. One Night is enough to entertain me and I'm done in 10-15 minutes.

Mr. Wallace fired "Clue".

P.I. is a deduction game for 2 to 5 players similar to Clue without the boring phase of roll and move.

I think it works better with 3 or more players. I like the artwork that remember famous movies like Casablanca and other great scenarios/characters from TV series or movies.

I have to say that I prefer as deduction game the masterpiece "Letters from Whitechapel". But this is an OK game for some groups and moments.

Red November

Red November was good, but it had some major drawbacks as played by our group:

* Fiddly timekeeping/turn order mechanic was slow to resolve and caused problems when people had to guarantee a fix happened without any item to help.
* So many different types of problems required a lot of bits to keep track of while resolving events.
* Soviet gnomish sub theme was a hoot for some, a real turn-off for MANY others
* Too compact; cramped board, small cards, small tiles, and despite the small components, fitting them in the box is a puzzle and a half.
* The "less deadly dying" rule was implemented in every game I played after the first; the player elimination mechanic just doesn't work well in a co-op.
* The game is won mostly on luck; everything has to go as right as can be expected of a game where everything's going wrong. Every die roll, every tile draw and every card turned over has to occur at just the right time for the players to have any prayer of being able to triage effectively.
* The game allows for the backstabbing mechanic of abandoning ship. This usually turns out to be a double-whammy, when the Kraken is looming and the player with the only Aqualung decides to leave his colleagues to their fate.

Pandemic solves most of the problems:

* The flow of a turn, and players' turn order, is much more straightforward. Do 4 actions, draw 2 cards, infect X cities, player to your left then does the same.
* The spread of the diseases is the only bad thing happening, and resolving each infection is easier.
* The disease theme can still be a turnoff, but it's far less offensive to most who have seen it (hey, your object is to save the world; who doesn't like that?).
* Board is nice and spacious (4 times bigger then RN); plenty of room for everything in most places (the OTB expansion's smaller tokens and petri dishes make it even better).
* No player elimination in any variant; even the Bio-Terrorist stays in the game when captured.
* The game is won with a little luck and some good planning and use of actions. Though the game is almost always lost due to a series of unfortunate events, good use of each player's Role strengths, and effective use of Actions and cards make this game far more winnable when well-played.
* Except for the Bio-Terrorist, everyone's all-for-one and one-for-all; you have to save the planet because you can't get off.

I've only played this a couple of times but I think it's given the pink slip to... Lost Cities

Lost cities is a blast, but there's limited interaction, you have to keep track of a few things, and since you're waiting for a couple of cards to appear (or not) and moving one card each turn, so you wouldn't call Lost Cities "full of surprises." Toward the end of the game most things have happened and you're just waiting for it to wrap up, it's pretty clear how it's going to turn out.

Parade has the fun of organizing the numbers from one to ten in various suits divided between you and your opponent, but several cards can move in a turn, or none. You get a higher degree of control, but so does your opponent. Players have some control over game end, so your opponent may end it unexpectedly, or you may surprise them with a big finish. Things hop!

I am speaking here of Parade as a two player game, which is where I understand it be best. As a four to six player game it may be too random to compare with the Knizia classic, but Lost Cities is limited to two anyway.

... fired the crap out of the D&D adventure game system.

I have both Castle Ravenloft and Wrath of Ashardalon. I was planning on getting Legend of Drizzt. That's not going to happen now.

Rise of the Runelords has a much quicker setup time, game mechanics that I personally find more fun, consistent new content, and a functioning campaign system.

Throw in the fact that I am an unapologetic hater of 4th ed. D&D, it's no surprise to me that this replaced the D&D adventure game system in such short order.

Runebound had been my favorite world adventuring game, but with lack of co-op and the tendency for one player to run away and hide with a victory, Pathfinder quickly took the lead.

Don't get me wrong, I love the exploration and combat in Runebound. I still like to play it as a solo game, but Pathfinder is better in almost every way...

The reason why it fired Time's Up Family in my book is because I get nearly as many words (each word is on an individual card rather than 2 per card).

You can play with the game's real rules or just apply the Time's Up rules if you want!

Try it!

Maybe this isn't fair but Pocket Battles is very similar to C&C. Three zones with front lines and rear lines, damage weakens units, alternating play, etc.

But here are the top 5 reasons I've fired C&C:

1. Fits in my pocket vs. fits in a large reinforced backpack.

2. 0 wooden blocks vs. 10,000 wooden blocks

3. Quick to setup, play, and put away again.

4. Can take one of them to the pub easily. (Important if you want to drink beer and play games with friends... see Good Beer, Good Games, Good Friends)

5. Costs less then $10 vs. over $50

Sure they aren't the same game, and C&C has cards and fog, but for me this game scratches the itch without hurting the wallet or my patience.

A House Divided

AHD was a semi-impulse buy, off a sale from my FLGS. It got the ACW craze going, Battle Cry: 150th Civil War Anniversary Edition followed, as did books and films blush . AHD was easy to learn, especially basic rules, but soon the victory conditions in particular left a lot to be desired for. Union holds basically all of the South (particularly their recruiting cities) except Richmond but the Confederacy wins ? For the People was too long my my taste, so PoF hit the radar hard, CDG that for me gives a more life-like feel of the country during the war (Events in particular) than what AHD does. More leaders isn't a bad thing either. Victory conditions and limits to the # of corps that can be deployed just work better for my taste than in AHD. And playing time is also about the half of AHD's if doing a full game. All in all, don't see AHD coming back out any time soon, while PoF will continue to see plays regularly.
