Happy New Year, Geeks!

I'm curious. What game basically fired/pink slipped another game for you?

I.E. You enjoyed Candyland and played it a lot but when you got Chutes and Ladders, CL was tossed out the door.

How could this happen? Well, the above example isn't that great but maybe you learned a new game that was similar in mechanics but better than the game you were playing. So, you tossed the older one out!

I'm going to list the game that did the firing and mention which game was fired in the body of the text.

6/6/11 WOW, this GL has been a ton of fun b/c of all those that have contributed thoughts. Nice going! There was a suggestion to edit the list alphabetically. I thought it a great idea at this point for searching, etc. So, done.

1/5/10 1:30pm EST EDIT: I think this geeklist is going to get me FIRED...

Black Vienna gave me everything I love about Clue with its simple deduction system, while throwing out all of the junk I dislike (e.g., rolling dice to run around a mansion).

I just love this game! I thought I would love EF2, and ended up liking but not loving it. I think it may have been a half a level too deep for me, especially figuring out how to properly manage the HQ activations and understanding supply. If I played it FtF rather than PBEM and live vassal I might love it, but I think it doesn't quite hit the spot for me.

BitE absolutely does. I love games that have resource management as part of production, BitE has that. I love games with blitzing and/or exploitation, BitE has BOTH (and they're slightly different). I love games that have a strategic warfare component, BitE has that. I love games that have some type of reserve move / reserve mode, BitE has that. I love games that let you choose between tactical support and interdiction wit your air forces, BitE does, but in a fairly limited way. I love games that I can play solo, BitE (even though it's a block game), does that pretty well so far.

This game is just, I think, exceptional. For the last few days, it's actually fired pretty much every game, actually.

Both these partnership card games predated Bridge - once Auction Bridge (and later on, Contract Bridge) hit, these largely fell by the wayside (the current popularity of Euchre in parts of the Midwest not withstanding).

Yes, I played Five Hundred as a kid.

As Bid Whist is still popular in the African-American community, I intentionally avoided mentioning it.

... fired any other traditional card game.

This game provides so much depth that you won't ever want to play anything else again that involves standard playing cards. They simply all pale in comparison.

I've played an entire league day (7+ hours of non-stop play), we then went to dinner and as soon as we were finished eating, the cards hit the table again for even more playing. It is addictive and intriguing beyond anything else I've experienced before and since.

Unfortunately the learning curve is steep and it takes you several weekends to get to (club) tournament level, and you need at least two others plus a qualified teacher for that. I've never managed to get more than one other person into Bridge permanently.

To add insult to injury this is perceived as a "little old ladies' game" because LOLs tend to play it -- while in fact it's a serious mind sport for all ages 12+.

If you like to play games such as Skat, Doppelkopf, Spades etc. you should give Bridge a serious try.

Considering that both games are light, short, with poor interaction and overall not very exciting (almost boring) games of set collection optimizing the taking of the actions and cards (workers, buildings and machines).

The Builders is a more compact, portable and cheaper game than Splendor. It's clear that Splendor has a more beautiful art (I hate the awful text font used in The Builders cards)... but it costs about double the money and carries ten times more air inside the box, as shown here:

Both games are in the "pole position" of getting out of my collection... but if I have to keep one of these, IMHO, I decide to keep The Builders.

Both games have dice, but Camel Up system works in a more elegant way at my point of view. The interaction is also in both games, but less luck envolved with camels than with ostriches. The art in both games is great!

Dominoes hasn't seen much action at my table since Carc showed up. Carcassonne excels at the Dominoes mechanic of placing a randomly-picked tile in the most advantageous position for the player, while adding theme, depth, an additional dimension of decision-making, and the most recognizable wooden bit of the 21st century. I'm sure there's work for Dominoes at a retirement home somewhere.

Fired...

Carcassonne

Carc is both the game that got me started playing board games as a hobby and one of the only games my wife and I both enjoy. To the latter point, though, she was starting to sour on it because she hates field scoring. Carc: The Discovery is the only version of the game that does away with that aspect entirely. I do like field scoring, but wasn't crazy about monasteries, and The Discovery also does away with those, so I decided to take a risk giving it a shot. I was afraid that only one of us would like it, and we might lose Carc too as common gaming ground - but we were close to that anyway. (We'd also both played H&G and both liked it less than original Carc.)

It turns out we both prefer The Discovery. It manages to be more tactical (which she likes) but also less random (which I like), and plays faster once you have the scoring rules down. The only major drawback I've encountered so far is that it doesn't support 6, but that's much less of an issue now than it was when my "collection" was just 2 or 3 games. (It also doesn't have the multitude of expansions available, but that's a blessing in disguise in some ways.)

The tower is a humdrum mechanic that works only in straight, obvious lines.

The dragon is a beastie that will always move in the most obvious way, which is basically not interesting.

The plague is more unyielding to sudden bursty movement, and moves at a completely different, steady pace.
