Happy New Year, Geeks!

I'm curious. What game basically fired/pink slipped another game for you?

I.E. You enjoyed Candyland and played it a lot but when you got Chutes and Ladders, CL was tossed out the door.

How could this happen? Well, the above example isn't that great but maybe you learned a new game that was similar in mechanics but better than the game you were playing. So, you tossed the older one out!

I'm going to list the game that did the firing and mention which game was fired in the body of the text.

6/6/11 WOW, this GL has been a ton of fun b/c of all those that have contributed thoughts. Nice going! There was a suggestion to edit the list alphabetically. I thought it a great idea at this point for searching, etc. So, done.

1/5/10 1:30pm EST EDIT: I think this geeklist is going to get me FIRED...

WotR is a fantastic 2 player game. However, it takes forever to set up, it's INSANELY fiddly (with all the pieces falling all over each other, specially nazgul) and it's lengthy.

TS solves these problems. A quicker playing, card driven 2 player pseudo wargame. There is the same tension of evil trying to overpower good as quickly as possible, but the action on the table is really well laid out in TS. Not to mention TS' card driven system is simply more fun. There is also a little less luck in TS because while there are still die rolls, not everything is up to a die roll like WotR. Whenever I want to play a tense, warlike 2 player experience, TS is coming out before WotR does.

I would almost say this also fires (Avalon) Resistance as well, but Avalon plays better with less people. Two Rooms and a Boom really needs 11 or more people to shine. 2R&B is a nice advance in social deduction gaming. One of the best parts about this game is includes an insane amount of roles, I think 50 or more. Some that cause a fundamental shift in the way the game is played. No player elimination is nice too. I also find the play environment while still stressful is less mean or accusatory.

Ted Alspach's revision really improves a great game!

The new rules are a powerful guide for Werewolf fans who want to twist and tweak the game possibilities. The art on the box, cards and rules are more suitable to the theme. There are a LOT of new characters. One new team: the vampires! And more surprises to discover!

All these new features increase the replayability value!

Scrabble drags.
Upwords (8x8 version) moves at a good clip.

Scrabble suffers from the "only consonants" or "only vowels" problem.

Upwords lets you make some really cool packed crosswords.

Scrabble has a high "if only X was done instead!" factor.
Upwords lets you change words to directly explore the "might have been"s.

HiS is a great game. It captured GBG's imagination long ago when it arrived o nthe scene. I played it 10 times or so. It was great. But, it felt linear after awhile... played out the same way in a sense.

I've played VQ once so far and I can honestly say I'll not be needing to play HiS again. VQ feels a lot more open, with more choices and with more diplomatic possibilities.

So long HIS!

fired Age of Steam

Friends,

Lisa and I have owned Volldampf for a while now, but just got around to playing it a few nights ago (two-player). Great day in the morning - this is a good game! We played with the Age of Steam rule whereby a cube must stop at the first city of the same color, as we had heard that is the only way to play. This is much better for us for any sort of two-player cube-delivery/rail game experience. Volldampf quite literally fired Age of Steam, as it and all of our expansion maps are currently listed on eBay.

Now, if only Volldampf had an expansion map or two - To the drawing board.

Cheers,
Bob (& Lisa)

For me, WotR didn't fire Middle Earth (above), which I've never played.

Instead- quite simply, it fired decades of disappointment- trials of thematic boardgames that didn't play well for us, or present a textured and successful theme.

Arkham Horror is an okay adventure, but this is a game.

Might seem to some too obvious to warrant being on the list, and I certainly hope to avoid a WotR edition debate, but oddly enough I did enjoy Risk LotR. Now because of WotR, the Risk version will probably never hit the table again and the pieces may get cannibalized and used as proxies for a game like Stronghold.

A Game of Thrones: The Board Game (Second Edition)

So, I'm one of those weirdos that still enjoys playing Diplomacy despite always being a nice guy and constantly getting stabbed. When heard of GoT as a sort of Diplomacy 2.0 I was immediatly curious. I wouldn't consider myself a fan of the theme, but I do enjoy the TV show, and so considered getting it. Most of my gaming group, though, is full of GoT nutters, so I knew one of them would get it - so far, three did. Through them I played GoT a decent amount of times, enough to go round the factions at least twice. While I enjoyed it, some aspects of it always left me cold. It felt repetitive and ultimately unfulfilling for the time it took.
Eventually I came across Warrior Knights, of which I had seen some mixed reviews, in a Mathtrade. I knew the game was thought to be broken, but I was fortunate enough to find copies of the "patch" Crown and Glory in my local boardgame retailer - I haven't played the game without that.
The game was an immediate sucess. Since I got it I've only played GoT once (with the expansion), and I don't miss it at all. More than that, my GoT-owning friends are constantly asking me to set up WK sessions. I find it more dynamic and fun, despite the similar lenght.

When I got into the American Revolution, I tried 1776, because I liked Avalon Hill from my gaming days in the 1980s. It left me feeling completely underwhelmed. It just didn't capture the revolution.

Then I played We the People and was blown away at how it DID capture the political struggle. However, the "Dead Hand Syndrome" could really kill an otherwise well-played competitive game.

Now that Washington's War is out, the few problems of WtP have been corrected and CDG-perfection has been achieved.
