Happy New Year, Geeks!

I'm curious. What game basically fired/pink slipped another game for you?

I.E. You enjoyed Candyland and played it a lot but when you got Chutes and Ladders, CL was tossed out the door.

How could this happen? Well, the above example isn't that great but maybe you learned a new game that was similar in mechanics but better than the game you were playing. So, you tossed the older one out!

I'm going to list the game that did the firing and mention which game was fired in the body of the text.

Nice work, Simon!

6/6/11 WOW, this GL has been a ton of fun b/c of all those that have contributed thoughts. Nice going! There was a suggestion to edit the list alphabetically. I thought it a great idea at this point for searching, etc. So, done.

1/5/10 1:30pm EST EDIT: I think this geeklist is going to get me FIRED...

Ever since I've had the version with titles I've felt no need or desire to play the original with names. In fact I traded away the original, because I just don't foresee myself playing it any more.

Fired Space Hulk: Death Angel

Now I can already sense the Pavlovian response to draw keyboards from their holsters and furiously type "Apples and oranges!" accompanied by a laundry list of differences, but the simple fact is that when I want a quick, small footprint, travel size space-themed game (granted, the theme of both games is a bit slapped on the mechanics), TEG is going to get the nod over SH every time. Both are non-confrontational, but the co-op of SH tends to be like herding cats. I don't mind a game being challenging as SH is, but the frustrating thing is the limited number of choices that only shrink as the game progresses and feels like the game is trolling you. Space Hulk was already on notice having received several warnings from management. The arrival of the younger, slimmer, prettier (she's also in charge of the coffee!) Tiny Epic Galaxies occasioned the final pink slip.

Why?

A. The lack of theme of Dominion never really appealed to me.

... fired The Castles of Burgundy

A nice controversial dispute, but once which is certainly valid in my opinion. There are several reasons for this. First, both games do essentially the same thing: puzzling together many points on a private board where the other players just alter various boundary conditions (namely in what options you have). There are points for the long term, but also for the short term. So although the mechanics of both titles are different, there's not really a major difference in what the players are asked to do. Given that knowledge, Trajan does away with the reactive nature of dice. You can modify the result of the dice to your heart's desire... But they remain dice. The Mancala wheel on the other hand is completely deterministic. You can plan ahead as far as you want or care. Second, the artwork of Trajan is clearer. In bad light this game wins out easily. Third, Trajan plays in half the time of CoB because people can interleave thinking about their own actions with the actual actions of their opponents.

Make no mistake, Castles of Burgundy on its own is a fine title... But because Trajan exists it can be retired without remorse.

Twilight Imperium Fired:

Starcraft is truly a great board game, but it is haunted by some extremely complex systems that only really make sense after you've played it 3-5 times or are familiar with the computer game. I know I'll enjoy it when we break it out, but it's very hard to get new people into it.

Twilight Imperium, on the other hand, is one I just played recently that captures the same feel but does it in a much simpler package. Much easier to teach and to grasp for new players.

Yup, I'm going there.

And I'm not just being Mr. Hypebuster, either. The appeal of Eclipse wore off remarkably quickly, and after my first post-Eclipse game of TI3, I've felt zero desire to ever go back to it. Yes, I'm not going to play TI3 as often as you can with Eclipse, but that's not really a selling point when there's just so much that isn't there. The length of TI3 is part of the appeal, part of what makes it feel so epic. It's a long game, but I'm immersed in a way that a 2 hour game of Eclipse is just not capable of providing. It just doesn't have the character that TI3 does...I have no connection to the planets I control, they're just colored spheres on a numbered hex. The aliens are drab and, as far as I'm concerned, mechanically set the game back. And the lack of politics outside of, "Ok, we can be friends, let's exchange chits" could never compare to the heated debate that can spring up over a new law coming up in TI3 at a crucial moment.

So yeah, TI3 is a very long game, I'll likely only ever play it 4-6 times a year, but any one game of it will always be more fun, more immersive, and more satisfying than Eclipse's design allows it to be.

WotR is a fantastic 2 player game. However, it takes forever to set up, it's INSANELY fiddly (with all the pieces falling all over each other, specially nazgul) and it's lengthy.

TS solves these problems. A quicker playing, card driven 2 player pseudo wargame. There is the same tension of evil trying to overpower good as quickly as possible, but the action on the table is really well laid out in TS. Not to mention TS' card driven system is simply more fun. There is also a little less luck in TS because while there are still die rolls, not everything is up to a die roll like WotR. Whenever I want to play a tense, warlike 2 player experience, TS is coming out before WotR does.

I would almost say this also fires (Avalon) Resistance as well, but Avalon plays better with less people. Two Rooms and a Boom really needs 11 or more people to shine. 2R&B is a nice advance in social deduction gaming. One of the best parts about this game is includes an insane amount of roles, I think 50 or more. Some that cause a fundamental shift in the way the game is played. No player elimination is nice too. I also find the play environment while still stressful is less mean or accusatory.

The new rules are a powerful guide for Werewolf fans who want to twist and tweak the game possibilities. The art on the box, cards and rules are more suitable to the theme. There are a LOT of new characters. One new team: the vampires! And more surprises to discover!

All these new features increase the replayability value!
