Happy New Year, Geeks!

I'm curious. What game basically fired/pink slipped another game for you?

I.E. You enjoyed Candyland and played it a lot but when you got Chutes and Ladders, CL was tossed out the door.

How could this happen? Well, the above example isn't that great but maybe you learned a new game that was similar in mechanics but better than the game you were playing. So, you tossed the older one out!

I'm going to list the game that did the firing and mention which game was fired in the body of the text.

Nice work, Simon!

6/6/11 WOW, this GL has been a ton of fun b/c of all those that have contributed thoughts. Nice going! There was a suggestion to edit the list alphabetically. I thought it a great idea at this point for searching, etc. So, done.

1/5/10 1:30pm EST EDIT: I think this geeklist is going to get me FIRED...

Ticket to Ride: Europe

TtR: Asia's mountain routes feature trains labeled with an x in the map ... so in place of the unknown extra amount of train cards needed to build in TtR:Europe, it has a Mountain Crossing area in the board, where the player must place a train from his reserve, earning two points for it but losing access to them for the rest of the game. I like it better than the tunnel routes of TtR:Europe. Plus it has to maps, and plays up to 6 in teams.

Both are about collecting cards to build routes/stations. But TtR is much more fun for me. I find it way more interactive because you can deny somebody from a route etc.

Ticket to Ride: Switzerland

We got TTR:Switzerland hoping for a better 2p experience than TTR:E offers. Then we got Nordic Countries, and I don't think Switzerland has hit the table since.

(We also just got 1912, and two player Big Cities seems to work pretty well. I doubt it will overtake Nordic, but it definitely digs Switzerland's grave even deeper.)

To be honest, Ticket to Ride is one of the few games my wife will play and the Switzerland map didn't catch on for either of us. This is the perfect two player version of this game that allows for some blocking and interaction that we don't get in the standard game.

Fired:

I played the original Ticket to Ride to death. Ticket to Ride: Europe offered more variety at the expense of slightly greater complexity, without significantly more fun (although it was still quite fun).

Ticket to Ride 1910 brought life back to the original board, so much so that I don't think I've gone back to Ticket to Ride: Europe since.

I found that at all times I'd rather play T&E to Reef Encounter, and eventually sold it.

(One member of my game group preferred it b/c you could choose the tiles you get instead of being stuck drawing no reds).

Wait wait wait.....I still play chess and enjoy it. But Tigris got me to stop and realize that all that ridiculous book study sucks. Chess tournaments are entire weekends spent in silence. Tigris, on the other hand, scratches a similar itch but allows me to play with up to 4 people and be somewhat social. After experiencing Tigris (and others), I am really on the verge of giving up studying dry chess books. I will never give up "pick up" games of chess or online fast time control chess, but doubt I will still attend the long weekend tournaments where only a couple of moves happen in any given 15 minute period.

Why?

... fired The Castles of Burgundy

A nice controversial dispute, but once which is certainly valid in my opinion. There are several reasons for this. First, both games do essentially the same thing: puzzling together many points on a private board where the other players just alter various boundary conditions (namely in what options you have). There are points for the long term, but also for the short term. So although the mechanics of both titles are different, there's not really a major difference in what the players are asked to do. Given that knowledge, Trajan does away with the reactive nature of dice. You can modify the result of the dice to your heart's desire... But they remain dice. The Mancala wheel on the other hand is completely deterministic. You can plan ahead as far as you want or care. Second, the artwork of Trajan is clearer. In bad light this game wins out easily. Third, Trajan plays in half the time of CoB because people can interleave thinking about their own actions with the actual actions of their opponents.

Make no mistake, Castles of Burgundy on its own is a fine title... But because Trajan exists it can be retired without remorse.

Starcraft is truly a great board game, but it is haunted by some extremely complex systems that only really make sense after you've played it 3-5 times or are familiar with the computer game. I know I'll enjoy it when we break it out, but it's very hard to get new people into it.

Twilight Imperium, on the other hand, is one I just played recently that captures the same feel but does it in a much simpler package. Much easier to teach and to grasp for new players.

Yup, I'm going there.

And I'm not just being Mr. Hypebuster, either. The appeal of Eclipse wore off remarkably quickly, and after my first post-Eclipse game of TI3, I've felt zero desire to ever go back to it. Yes, I'm not going to play TI3 as often as you can with Eclipse, but that's not really a selling point when there's just so much that isn't there. The length of TI3 is part of the appeal, part of what makes it feel so epic. It's a long game, but I'm immersed in a way that a 2 hour game of Eclipse is just not capable of providing. It just doesn't have the character that TI3 does...I have no connection to the planets I control, they're just colored spheres on a numbered hex. The aliens are drab and, as far as I'm concerned, mechanically set the game back. And the lack of politics outside of, "Ok, we can be friends, let's exchange chits" could never compare to the heated debate that can spring up over a new law coming up in TI3 at a crucial moment.

So yeah, TI3 is a very long game, I'll likely only ever play it 4-6 times a year, but any one game of it will always be more fun, more immersive, and more satisfying than Eclipse's design allows it to be.
