Happy New Year, Geeks!

I'm curious. What game basically fired/pink slipped another game for you?

I.E. You enjoyed Candyland and played it a lot but when you got Chutes and Ladders, CL was tossed out the door.

How could this happen? Well, the above example isn't that great but maybe you learned a new game that was similar in mechanics but better than the game you were playing. So, you tossed the older one out!

I'm going to list the game that did the firing and mention which game was fired in the body of the text.

Nice work, Simon!

6/6/11 WOW, this GL has been a ton of fun b/c of all those that have contributed thoughts. Nice going! There was a suggestion to edit the list alphabetically. I thought it a great idea at this point for searching, etc. So, done.

1/5/10 1:30pm EST EDIT: I think this geeklist is going to get me FIRED...

Fired Risk.

At age 12 I was a snot-nosed Risk hustler in my neighborhood. Even logged 24 hours over three days playing an extended game as half of Fortress Australia. Loved the game.

Then, one magic Christmas eve, my older brother called me into his room and said, "Look at this game I got." Hexes! Chits! Theme! Historical Context! I was forever hooked and never looked back.

That was the Christmas I went from being a game playing boy to a boardgaming man.

The game is so much more intense with a much stronger flavor. The cooperation is more important here as it is a harder game, and more pronounced since the board is only 9 squares. You can share tokens if you're on the same tile. There are lots and lots of nerve-wracking decisions to be made from turn to turn, like whether to not use up your special power to weaken a ghost on the prayer circle and chance rolling the dice. Or even whether to fight or ask for villager help. Pandemic feels much more like "Oh, I guess I'll go here while you go there. Ok, now take some little cubes off" and isn't particularly tension filled. You're either winning or losing hardcore MOST of the time. In Ghost Stories there's so many more opportunities for role-playing and saying things like "I slash at the Sharp Nailed Mistresses to slay them and unblock your power!" or "I kick the Severed Heads off the board!" and you are very nearly always having to take care of something on the board that's urgent (haunters, blocked powers, blocked Tao, taken dice, etc.)

... fired itself

but also Witch of Salem

and Lord of the Rings

and possibly Yggdrasil

and a host of others...

For a simple reason: if I play a coop, I do not want to have my own actions burdened by uncertainty in the form of randomness. Coops to me are like joint puzzles: the game is in the deliberation, not in seeing careful deliberation cut short because some silly die or card draw says that my group can't perform the action they committed to. Randomness in a coop is fine, but not implemented in the raw fashion offered by these titles above.

Pandemic and Forbidden Island get this aspect completely right: what action you had in mind happens, every time, all the time. These titles are just like any other game, in fact. Or can you imagine, for example, Caylus where placing your worker is entangled with a dice throw, or where payment is randomly augmented by a card draw? I thought so. So why are you putting up with this silliness in coops?

The Grape Escape fired Splat!

Splat!, released by MB in 1990 was the ultimate in sadistic children's games at the time of its release. If your opponent's playing piece was in the wrong place at the wrong time, it was your duty to use the supplied plastic hand and smash them into a play-dough pancake.

Then came Parker Brothers answer to Splat! two years later: The Grape Escape. The Grape Escape was similar to Splat! in that it was a simple roll-and-move category of game. But what The Grape Escape brought to the table wasn't just the promotion of sadism, it was out-and-out torture simulation for children. The Grape Escape allowed you to cleave your opponent in half with a tree saw, pulverize them under a ridged roller, disembody them with an over-sized pair of scissors, or unsympathetically squish them with a boot.

When I was a kid, I thought Splat! was amusing. And then The Grape Escape came out, and at that point I knew that I had lost some of my innocence.

Guillotine is easy to teach, with lots of luck involved regarding card draw, but without the complete randomness in game length (and rules) as happens in Fluxx.

Guillotine doesn't overstay its welcome and doesn't suffer from the overwhelming advantage that Fluxx players familiar with a particular deck get over newbies by knowing all the victory conditions available.

Fun filler beats frustrating filler.

Fired Bridge.

Bridge is basically two connected games: bidding, and the play of the hand. Both are fascinating and challenging, but the bidding is really the heart of the game--there's lots of trick-taking games in which to practice your squeeze-plays and finesses, but there's only one place where you can get the deep logic of Bridge bidding.

Until, that is, Hanabi came along. By stripping out the card play, Hanabi takes Bridge's logic and distills it down to its essence. Memorizing conventions goes away, because Hanabi is simple enough that all its conventions can be derived from first principles. Teaching Bridge to a newcomer is, to be honest, painful for both the master and the student; teaching Hanabi is always a delight. And as a bonus, Hanabi is flexible enough to handle 2-5.

If I found three other veteran Bridge players--rare these days!--I'd probably play again for old time's sake. But since Hanabi came along, I don't even try to get newbies into Bridge, because Hanabi captures everything that's great about the game in a vastly more accessible package. Never has there been a more deserving Spiel des Jahres winner.
