Happy New Year, Geeks!

I'm curious. What game basically fired/pink slipped another game for you?

I.E. You enjoyed Candyland and played it a lot but when you got Chutes and Ladders, CL was tossed out the door.

How could this happen? Well, the above example isn't that great but maybe you learned a new game that was similar in mechanics but better than the game you were playing. So, you tossed the older one out!

I'm going to list the game that did the firing and mention which game was fired in the body of the text.

6/6/11 WOW, this GL has been a ton of fun b/c of all those that have contributed thoughts. Nice going! There was a suggestion to edit the list alphabetically. I thought it a great idea at this point for searching, etc. So, done.

1/5/10 1:30pm EST EDIT: I think this geeklist is going to get me FIRED...

Basketball Strategy is the worst game I have ever played. It devotes half a page of the rulebook to the jump ball -- need I say more about fiddliness?

When I discovered Stasis Pro, I was impressed. It flowed well and captured the NBA very well. Then I set up a single-elimination tournament of the 1986-87 teams and Atlanta made it to the finals after losing Dominique Wilkins, Randy Wittman, Reggie Theus, and Cliff Levingston. It was then I discovered the problem of Stasis Pro Basketball: rebounding is everything (Scott Hastings, Antoine Carr, Tree Rollins, and Kevin Willis were the replacements -- all had good rebounding numbers). The game lacked realism when Dennis Rodman becaume the most valuable player of the 1989 season (followed up by Roy Tarpley).

Along came Strat-O-Matic into my life, and all was right in the world.

I only have one slot on my shelf that holds the in-depth Martin Wallace game that looks like it will be a ton of fun, but probably takes 5-6 hours rather than the advertised 3, and probably requires multiple plays to really "get".

So, I had to trade off Princes to get Struggle. I haven't played Struggle much more than I did Princes, but there is a better chance that I will someday.

The completist in me now wishes I hadn't traded off Princes, but I know that having many long, in-depth games on my shelf will likely just take up space.

Survive! fired The Downfall of Pompeii

I fully realize Survive! came out way before Pompeii, but with the re-release I am now exposed to it and have played and own both. When first teaching the game it donned on me how my explanation for Survive! was almost identical to the explanation of Pompeii, aside from mechanic changes.

Survive! has the quicker meeple placing time, has the more interactive screw you factor during the escape time, and has a running away mechanic that actually makes sense. Pompeii is still a great game, but Survive! does everything a bit better.

Dominion

Yeah, I know I'm going to have to defend this position and in fact this is probably only true for our gaming group, but allow me to explain: My group was mostly for D&D and casual boardgames. We would meet infrequently to play things like Scrabble, Bananagrams, Cranium, and the occasional game of D&D but we hadn't discovered classic tabletop boardgaming geekery. Tanto Cuore, along with the Order of the Stick Adventure Game, were our first foray into sitting down to enjoy some more deep game nights.

We picked up Tanto and the first expansion at an anime con last year and we've played it several times since then and had a blast. We read up on it, found out how much of a Dominion clone it was, and decided that we should skip Dominion and jump straight in to games like Nightfall, Thunderstone, Ascension, and Quarriors. Two of which we already own and enjoy.

As far as being our gateway and introduction to deckbuilders Tanto Cuore certainly gave Dominion the preemptive pink slip. Which one is a better game well that I can't really say

Cranium Scribblish

Basically the same game, except somehow not.

* Scribblish uses some weird plastic viewfinder with a strip of paper, whereas Telestrations uses a dry erase flipbook. This makes it way easier to display (and mock) the drawings and guesses of those who came before you.

* Telestrations has straightforward scoring, whereas Scribblish involves an awkward 2-part voting process that seems a bit stilted to me.

* Scribblish uses die rolls to randomly determine who you pass your viewfinder to, so you sometimes get the same one back. It's not nearly the challenge they think it is to figure out which one was yours. Telestrations just passes around the circle for one clean complete turn.

All in all it just feels like Scribblish is trying too hard to be the game Telestrations is naturally. Like they added "zany" elements to it to make it more fun, when really Telestrations is still one of the games I laugh most during while playing it.

This game fired Ticket to Ride. The strategy in these two games is not identical, each has something the other doesn't. However, both are route building games where you collect cards to build routes, and you want to complete some tasks with your routes before others do. I guess T&T hasn't totally fired TTR, I'd say TTR is semi-retired.

Not from a gameplay but a gateway perspective. Up until Ticket to Ride came out Settlers was the de facto Euro game people pulled when they wanted to initiate the uninitiated into the world of boardgames. While Settlers is a fairly simple game that scales competitively with the skill of the players it can be a drag and be a bit too abstract for non-gamers. Ticket to Ride is so easy to teach and understand. It's short as well making it the perfect game to introduce non-gamers to our hobby.

Honorable mention if the goal is to introduce someone to a ball kicking experience (thanks Andy!)

Rail Baron

I got RB in the 1980s, and it was my only "bookshelf" game for decades. Then Settlers showed up at a family Christmas gathering, and I was drawn back into designer games.

Once we found our way to TTR, I said, "At last a train game that is simpler to teach and play than RB and doesn't take 3 hours!" In all fairness, I have not played Steam, Railways of the World or any of the other hobby train games, so there may be better ones to compare to RB. For me, though, TTR is a fun train-themed experience that doesn't get heavy. Bye, bye, RB.

My 8th grade son, however, periodically begs for a game of Rail Baron...

TtR: Asia's mountain routes feature trains labeled with an x in the map ... so in place of the unknown extra amount of train cards needed to build in TtR:Europe, it has a Mountain Crossing area in the board, where the player must place a train from his reserve, earning two points for it but losing access to them for the rest of the game. I like it better than the tunnel routes of TtR:Europe. Plus it has to maps, and plays up to 6 in teams.
