Happy New Year, Geeks!

I'm curious. What game basically fired/pink slipped another game for you?

I.E. You enjoyed Candyland and played it a lot but when you got Chutes and Ladders, CL was tossed out the door.

How could this happen? Well, the above example isn't that great but maybe you learned a new game that was similar in mechanics but better than the game you were playing. So, you tossed the older one out!

I'm going to list the game that did the firing and mention which game was fired in the body of the text.

6/6/11 WOW, this GL has been a ton of fun b/c of all those that have contributed thoughts. Nice going! There was a suggestion to edit the list alphabetically. I thought it a great idea at this point for searching, etc. So, done.

1/5/10 1:30pm EST EDIT: I think this geeklist is going to get me FIRED...

This game fired Ticket to Ride. The strategy in these two games is not identical, each has something the other doesn't. However, both are route building games where you collect cards to build routes, and you want to complete some tasks with your routes before others do. I guess T&T hasn't totally fired TTR, I'd say TTR is semi-retired.

Not from a gameplay but a gateway perspective. Up until Ticket to Ride came out Settlers was the de facto Euro game people pulled when they wanted to initiate the uninitiated into the world of boardgames. While Settlers is a fairly simple game that scales competitively with the skill of the players it can be a drag and be a bit too abstract for non-gamers. Ticket to Ride is so easy to teach and understand. It's short as well making it the perfect game to introduce non-gamers to our hobby.

Honorable mention if the goal is to introduce someone to a ball kicking experience (thanks Andy!)

Rail Baron

I got RB in the 1980s, and it was my only "bookshelf" game for decades. Then Settlers showed up at a family Christmas gathering, and I was drawn back into designer games.

Once we found our way to TTR, I said, "At last a train game that is simpler to teach and play than RB and doesn't take 3 hours!" In all fairness, I have not played Steam, Railways of the World or any of the other hobby train games, so there may be better ones to compare to RB. For me, though, TTR is a fun train-themed experience that doesn't get heavy. Bye, bye, RB.

My 8th grade son, however, periodically begs for a game of Rail Baron...

Ticket to Ride: Europe

TtR: Asia's mountain routes feature trains labeled with an x in the map ... so in place of the unknown extra amount of train cards needed to build in TtR:Europe, it has a Mountain Crossing area in the board, where the player must place a train from his reserve, earning two points for it but losing access to them for the rest of the game. I like it better than the tunnel routes of TtR:Europe. Plus it has to maps, and plays up to 6 in teams.

I played the original Ticket to Ride to death. Ticket to Ride: Europe offered more variety at the expense of slightly greater complexity, without significantly more fun (although it was still quite fun).

Wait wait wait.....I still play chess and enjoy it. But Tigris got me to stop and realize that all that ridiculous book study sucks. Chess tournaments are entire weekends spent in silence. Tigris, on the other hand, scratches a similar itch but allows me to play with up to 4 people and be somewhat social. After experiencing Tigris (and others), I am really on the verge of giving up studying dry chess books. I will never give up "pick up" games of chess or online fast time control chess, but doubt I will still attend the long weekend tournaments where only a couple of moves happen in any given 15 minute period.

... fired The Castles of Burgundy

A nice controversial dispute, but once which is certainly valid in my opinion. There are several reasons for this. First, both games do essentially the same thing: puzzling together many points on a private board where the other players just alter various boundary conditions (namely in what options you have). There are points for the long term, but also for the short term. So although the mechanics of both titles are different, there's not really a major difference in what the players are asked to do. Given that knowledge, Trajan does away with the reactive nature of dice. You can modify the result of the dice to your heart's desire... But they remain dice. The Mancala wheel on the other hand is completely deterministic. You can plan ahead as far as you want or care. Second, the artwork of Trajan is clearer. In bad light this game wins out easily. Third, Trajan plays in half the time of CoB because people can interleave thinking about their own actions with the actual actions of their opponents.

Make no mistake, Castles of Burgundy on its own is a fine title... But because Trajan exists it can be retired without remorse.
