Happy New Year, Geeks!

I'm curious. What game basically fired/pink slipped another game for you?

I.E. You enjoyed Candyland and played it a lot but when you got Chutes and Ladders, CL was tossed out the door.

How could this happen? Well, the above example isn't that great but maybe you learned a new game that was similar in mechanics but better than the game you were playing. So, you tossed the older one out!

I'm going to list the game that did the firing and mention which game was fired in the body of the text.

6/6/11 WOW, this GL has been a ton of fun b/c of all those that have contributed thoughts. Nice going! There was a suggestion to edit the list alphabetically. I thought it a great idea at this point for searching, etc. So, done.

1/5/10 1:30pm EST EDIT: I think this geeklist is going to get me FIRED...

Both games are "trade some stuff that you obtain for things that score points," with some interesting differences:

* Bazaar penalizes inefficiencies. The more extraneous stones that you have when you fulfill cards, the higher your penalty. I like this feature.

* Bazaar's extra level of indirection makes it a tougher game to play well. As a result, Splendor is a faster game, though point goals can be adjusted to suit time constraints.

* Bazaar doesn't have the notion of "goods on hand" that Splendor does. This is not necessarily a problem, because I like the total consumption model a bit better, more so than the engine building. If I get the itch for engine building in a similar game I think that I can get the same feeling as Splendor from Monsoon Market in this regard.

I dislike the constant dice rolling with Bazaar, which can be a pain at times. My kids and I are exploring less-luck variants to see if anything sticks.

Many similarities. Great themes and components too, both games. To me, Belfort is much less solitair-ish, and more intuitive to play.
Stone Age takes half as much time to play, and, so, is more of a "family game" if length is a factor.
But I think that Belfort is more fun, and has more replayability.

Both games have a similar two phase approach. Also both use sort of a market mechanic and an auction mechanic. However Biblios adds a new wrinkle with shifting point values for a certain investment. I think the theme of both games are fine.

However, after recently adding Biblios to my collection I can't justify owning both games any longer considering my limited shelf real estate. So I marking For Sale "For trade" in my collections.

By the way the one plus that For Sale has over Biblios is that its slightly more accessible in theme and rules. But both are really easy to learn.

Fired:

1) It's a free public domain original versus a commercialized rip off.
2) The artwork in Go4 looks like a menu mat in a cheap Chinese restaurant.
3) Card distribution makes a better game: Go4 allows the shedding of cards way too easily.
4) Big Two is played with many house rules for wildcards, allowable combinations etc. Go4 doesn't.
5) Go4 has a "broken" scoring system that too harshly penalizes the loser and encourages people to shed cards quickly rather than plan strategically; Big Two has a better threshold of when cards start counting double against you.

Note: This game did not fire Tichu, since that is a four player partnership game, and these two aren't. However, the public domain versions of Tichu fire that too, or at least put it on work furlough.

Fired Carcassonne and El Caballero.

I used to think El Caballero as the more strategic version of Carcassonne, but the mechanics are a little intuitive and clunky. On the other hand, Bison is a pure area majority game with a really tight resource management mechanic built-in. The theme is similar: Bisons-in-the-fields, Salmon-in-the-rivers and Turkeys-in-the-hills. It is a fierce game that surprisingly plays well with 2 players (up to 4).

The downside for me is the artwork.

I just love this game! I thought I would love EF2, and ended up liking but not loving it. I think it may have been a half a level too deep for me, especially figuring out how to properly manage the HQ activations and understanding supply. If I played it FtF rather than PBEM and live vassal I might love it, but I think it doesn't quite hit the spot for me.

BitE absolutely does. I love games that have resource management as part of production, BitE has that. I love games with blitzing and/or exploitation, BitE has BOTH (and they're slightly different). I love games that have a strategic warfare component, BitE has that. I love games that have some type of reserve move / reserve mode, BitE has that. I love games that let you choose between tactical support and interdiction wit your air forces, BitE does, but in a fairly limited way. I love games that I can play solo, BitE (even though it's a block game), does that pretty well so far.

This game is just, I think, exceptional. For the last few days, it's actually fired pretty much every game, actually.

... fired any other traditional card game.

This game provides so much depth that you won't ever want to play anything else again that involves standard playing cards. They simply all pale in comparison.

I've played an entire league day (7+ hours of non-stop play), we then went to dinner and as soon as we were finished eating, the cards hit the table again for even more playing. It is addictive and intriguing beyond anything else I've experienced before and since.

Unfortunately the learning curve is steep and it takes you several weekends to get to (club) tournament level, and you need at least two others plus a qualified teacher for that. I've never managed to get more than one other person into Bridge permanently.

To add insult to injury this is perceived as a "little old ladies' game" because LOLs tend to play it -- while in fact it's a serious mind sport for all ages 12+.

If you like to play games such as Skat, Doppelkopf, Spades etc. you should give Bridge a serious try.

Considering that both games are light, short, with poor interaction and overall not very exciting (almost boring) games of set collection optimizing the taking of the actions and cards (workers, buildings and machines).

The Builders is a more compact, portable and cheaper game than Splendor. It's clear that Splendor has a more beautiful art (I hate the awful text font used in The Builders cards)... but it costs about double the money and carries ten times more air inside the box, as shown here:

Both games are in the "pole position" of getting out of my collection... but if I have to keep one of these, IMHO, I decide to keep The Builders.
